The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Wonderful. Not a jaggy in sight (unlike mine), must be that high res! What clouds/sky config you using in that last shot? It's gorgeous :)

Alas I tend to change REX theme nearly every time I load up FSX, so there I no way I can remember, most likely though it would be from the overdrive set and probably thunderclouds, as for sky, that could be over the top theme.

Here are my latest shots:

See below for a sale on ORBX products. Can anyone recommend me a few good packages to get started? Soya help me decide please!

http://www.flightsimstore.com/index.php?manufacturers_id=92

All the ORBX product are excellent. It depends on where you want to fly and what type of flying you want to do. Orbx scenery is mostly enjoy by low altitude VFR flying. My personal recommendation would be to get the entire Australian pack and perhaps 2 small airfields that are positioned far away from each other, then in time you can always buy more airfields if you like them and fly different routes to enjoy different views & scenery. I wouldn't bother with the larger airports like YMML, not because they aren't any good, but they are large airports mainly for Jet travel and unless you have a powerful PC, you will drop notice a drop in FPS, whereas the smaller airports will be easier to handle. But again, this all depends on your own personal preference, their North American scenery is also very good.

Hope that helps.

Please enjoy my latest works which consists of my personal favorite closeup shots of flights I done over the past month. They are all made with the excellent 767 by Level D and HD liveries made by the talented boys at McPhat.

Has anyone bought/used the Saitek Flight Yoke? Just wondering what it's like as I been considering spending a few pennies on one of those.

Yes and no complaints, must admit I don't tend to use it often as I prefer to use my Saitek X52 mainly cause it easier to setup. But the yoke is when I feel like doing occasional long flight sessions plus, if you keep it in good condition, its also a good future investment as I plan to use Flightsim much more as I get older (more spare time then).

Review http://www.flightsim.com/main/review/saitekyk.htm

Make sure you shop around and find one that has the best price, some online flight shops very occasionally will do special deals on hardware like the Saitek range.

Hi folks,

I just finished making 2 more FSX short movies with the emphasis on short. In the past I got a bit carried away by making 8+min videos, but now I was ruthless with my clip editing. I have released 2 FSX video shorts 757 landing at Cairns here:

and a slightly more ambitious video short of the Super 80 here:

My main aim with both videos was to produce @3min video with a visually strong punch and have edited clips flow with the accompanied sound track. Anyhow, please let me know what you think and feel free to vote on the video on youtube. Best watched in 720p or 1080p.

Cheers

Hi folks,

I gotten inspiration from a recent trip and made 3 short FSX videos over the space of 3 days (there goes my weekend). I also took a small selection of shots from each video which is shown below including a link to the video itself if you fancy watching it (videos are best watched at 720p or 1080p full screen).

As always, enjoy the view:

Thanks for your time.

Guys I'm a newbie in regards to FSX but want to get into it.
Are there a list of "given" mods that people use for this program.
I'm not really after an exhyaustive list but ones that are classed as essential to anyone with FSX

Thanks

What Devrij said but I also highly recommend reading this thread. Skip past the screen shots and there should be plenty of information I and others have given that should really help you with getting into FSX.

Hello all,

I was listening to some music the other day and a song came up that gave me an idea about doing another FSX video on a particular aircraft. The song was Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones and the aircraft that came immediately to mind was the SR-71 aka Blackbird aka Habu. So if you fancy watching the video I done in tribute to this amazing aircraft then press here for the video.. The video is best watched at 720p or 1080p at full screen, please feel free to vote on it.

Here are some screen shots taken directly from the video(hence they look slightly grainy & washed out), I do hope you enjoy them:

Soya, do you have a website or perhaps a thread where you've done a write up about your rig? Just looking at your sig, it looks an absolute beast. I'd love to know how much it cost etc.

Are the above screenshots as you see them in game? Do you have your FPS limited etc?

Would be great to hear from you!

My rig is higly specced as FSX is not the only thing I use, for instance, there is no need to have 2 GFX cards with FSX as it does not take advantage of SLI or Crossfire. However, it is handy when running at very high res, I run at 2560x1600 so having 2 GFX cards does help with memory resource management at that res. FSX mainly need CPU power, so the better and faster CPU you can get your hand on the better FSX will run. The screen shot you see above and on previous postings are indeed from game, however, not all run smoothly during live capture, ie very busy airport shots especially will not run smooth even on my rig but perhaps with future hardware it will. I tend to have FPS set at unlimited but force the full screen and windowed Vsyn at monitors max 60Hz.

For more information I would HIGHLY recommend you read through this thread and the links posted in them. It is much info but if you want to get the most out of FSX and find out what you are getting into then at least you will have some bearings.

Best of luck with your setup.

played this when i was at a mates, liked it quite a bit but didnt end up buying it, this thread just inspired me to.

also how many of you guys have all the proper flight stuff? like the handles/controllers for the game??? ive got on joy stick lying around but may buy a proper set if its really necaserry?

If you are starting out, stick with a basic joystick, preferably one that has throttle control. Once you feel you are getting the flight bug and are enjoying the sim world, then by all means expand your hardware over time. Again, this thread has got many pointers and suggestions at hardware for FSX, best to read it.

Can you post the settings you use for the ENB mod please Soya?

Changing REX's sky theme also has a great influence on how ENB effects the lighting, which I often change to get different effects. I mostly prefer dark blue skies though, get best results with ENB. Also changing time of the day as an effect on ENB, ie early morning late afternoon etc.

Hope that helps.

I would personally highly recommend REX, especially now that its at version 2.0 and the extra texture pack 'Overdrive' is available for free. AFAIK it has little impact on frames due to it replacing textures from lower quality to high quality, so unless you have a pretty old GFX card, most cards nowadays can easily handle higher quality textures in FSX esp Nvidia (deals with large volumes of clouds better then ATI). I you do notice a difference in FPS then its most likely to do with heavier cloud volumes and you are probably using an ATI card, reduce the distance of cloud display should help.

As for a new CPU to run FSX better, that should work. FSX is deffo heavily CPU dependent so a faster CPU (or more cores) should help it running better. As for how much better I couldn't tell you, as it also depends on GFX card, FSX addons used and tweaking FSX.cfg.

Hope that helps.

Been sifting through a huge backlog of screen shots (mostly LDS 767s) and came up with a few shots I felt were worth sharing, enjoy:

(ps. some shots have edited nav/landing lights, the LDS defaults lights just don't look right to me, plus I added a slight blur on the last shot)

Good to see this thread being busy since last time I checked it. I caught up with the last few pages but I couldn't see anything directed at me personally or any questions that weren't kindly answered by other flight sim enthusiasts who contribute to this thread. If I did miss anything please just say so.

Do remember that if you skip pass the many screen shots in this thread, there is a wealth of useful information that has build up over time. Yes, its a fair bit to read but if you do not have the patience to read a few pages, you probably won't be interested or have the patience to fly aircrafts in FSX!

Meanwhile, I been busy with releasing another FSX video, this time of one of my favourite local sceneries, the excellently made Alderney by Earth Simulations.
Enjoy, best watched at full 1080p:

Looks like the PMDG 737 is indeed officially released at $69.99 which is @£45. However, their store server is apparently under Ddos attack from somewhere in China (many cyber attacks been coming from China over the past few years) but I'm sure they will have it sorted by tomorrow. Still pondering on getting it myself. I might wait for Captain Sim's 737, it will obviously not be as system's detailed but I am mostly interested in the exterior views and texture of an aircraft, I have no need for complex flight systems which I will never learn. Still, from the external model from PMDG looks sweet nonetheless.

Nice vid Soya :) May I ask what you set the target fps rate to?

Refresh rate is set at monitor max, 60Hz, but during recording I record at 30fps max, no need for more really, file sizes gets too large at 60fps recordings unless you stick with very short videos.

You are welcome to start another thread but considering its an addon plane not a complete stand alone sim plus it probably would interest other simmers who might be thinking about this addon, to keep your and other folks experiences with this new 737 addon to this thread, after all, it will provide good background reading for folks who might read this thread months or years from now. But I really don't mind personally.

On the Sale Side of things, I just bought a bunch of things at the Flightstore Pilot shop who are doing a grand Summer Sale. Many good bargains to be had including their entire software/hardware range on FS2004 & FSX. Do browse and choose carefully as many items (all boxed and will be send via mail) are pretty old pieces of software/addons and the level of quality/performance is much higher nowadays with quality addons like PMDG's 737 etc.

I ended up getting Horizon's VFR scenery (had most of them apart from Ireland & Scottish Isles, couldn't see the other volumes on Scotland though, anyone seen them anywhere else?) plus I got JF's Comet & Constellation & 70th Battle of Britain anniversary (these are practically half price compared to JF's website!). All in all I save @£80 :).

Site is here http://www.flightstore.co.uk/

If you are not sure what is or what isn't a bargain, feel free to list here what you are perhaps thinking of buying. IMO all of Horizon & Earth Simulations scenery is a bargain plus Just Flight & PMDG aircraft are a great bargain too.

(As the above screen shots are taken over a period of several years, they use a wide variety of addons and various REX2.0 & ENB settings)

Something wonderful has arrived and its not made by PMDG, the latest scenery release by Earth Simulations, Guernsey/Sark & Herm, 3 of the islands which make up part of the Channel Islands in the UK near the French coast. I very rarely get excited or rave about any of the latest FSX addon releases but this is something special, something extraordinary. In my time I have used many excellent scenery addons, from the likes of Orbx/Megascenery X/Horizon VFR/AS Germany VFR/NL2000v4/Blue Sky Scenery etc. Many are excellent and do a really good job of depicting the area they cover but now something has arrived which takes scenery realism/detail and accuracy to a whole new level, Earth Simulation's Guernsey. Combining high resolution photoreal imaging, highly detailed water masking, complex mesh depicting shearing cliffs and sloping hills and hand made/hand placed custom made 3D autogen showing every structure, building, house, tree and bush! Not only that, the scenery comes in 5 different seasons (winter & hard winter) which shows off the amazing transformation of the landscape during each season.

After spending several hours flying and exploring this scenery I can say with full confidence that this scenery is the most realistic depiction of an area I have ever seen in FSX. In my humble opinion it is 'The Best' scenery to date for FSX, full stop. ES's Guernsey scenery is the equivalent of what PMDG's 737NGX means to all aircraft releases that have come before it, it is in a class of its own!

I have made a small compilation of shots to try and show you, the viewer, why I'm raving about this scenery. The shots will hopefully convey and confirm what I have been saying so far, even I feel that my screen shots do not do this amazing scenery justice! I hope in time I can fully explore and grasp this entire scenery and show you more & better shots in the future. But for now do please enjoy a small selection of shots taken from a batch which can be fully viewed HERE

Enjoy and as always, all shots are unedited apart from resized & JPG'd.

btw these shots were not taking directly from FSX but from the post processed video, hence it is not as sharp or clear as my usual shots due to the compression of the video and UL to youtube.
