The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Did my first refresher flight over the weekend. Flew a Beech Baron in a very short hop between airports so it wouldn't be too overwhelming. I remembered more than I thought I was going to. I just focused on the controls to ease myself back in and surprisingly I managed to execute a reasonable ILS landing.

Going to add navigation in next and a longer flight. Think I still remember most of this! Then I'll add in SIDs and STARs and hopefully I'll be back up to speed shortly.

Ok been having a think about how I can improve on my fsx, currently my CPU i have is a Q6600 and from what i've seen the main issue is CPU speed, and ideally i should be looking for around the 3ghz mark, would it be worth going the clocking route and ocing to 3ghz which is supposedly easily done with the motherboard and cpu i have or, buy something like a E5800 which would be at 3.2GHz standard?

Flew Heathrow to Schiphol last night. Went OK. Think I'll try getting to grips with the FMC next.

Gradually all the rust is disappearing! Everything's starting to feel natural again.

Clock the Quad as high as you can go - I did notice a large difference going from Dual to Quad. Most people seem to be able to get above 3Ghz on the Q6600 (saying that, I'm not the most adept at overclocking....), so it wouldn't be worth getting a E5800 - in fact, I'd have thought the performance would have been worse.

Q6600s are still great (and capable) chips.

Cheers,

Rich

Good stuff! It's addictive!

Were you flying the ATR on that hop? Not been able to quite get my head around that one (though am quite happy in the 737 NGX... odd!). I should give it more of a go at some point.

The thought I had based on it was that FSX is a CPU MHz hungry, is it actually a multi-threaded programme then considering when it started typically people on sites used to run on a P4 3ghz

I flew the Learjet that comes with FSX as I didn't want to overcomplicate matters. Next flight I'll probably try the ATR though as it's my only payware aircraft and I don't think any of the defaults have an FMC.

I've also got to start tweaking my install so that the screenshots are more like some from this thread. :)

Does anyone have a rough list of planes that have the FMC? So far I have the PMDG 737NGX and 747, and the ATR. Are there any more worth bothering with?

Captain Sim 757/767 - nice models.

Aerosoft Airbus X has a nice, slightly more basic version. Definitely a good introduction and will get you familiar with the essentials. Flight model is good, and looks great too. Soya has some screen shots of it in flight earlier in this thread. I think one that might stand out is the 'Fly Niki' livery - with a monstrous cartoon fly on the forward fuselage - Here's a shot.

There's a mooted V2 with SID/STARS and a more complex FMC - but that may be some time away.

I quite like flying the 'bus - is different enough from the 737 to be noticeable, and has it's own little quirks (very European....)!

Overclocking is very worth it. I monitor the core usage on my keyboard screen while playing and 3-4 cores are permanently at 70%+, very CPU intensive game :)

I really got into it last night, did a few short trips in the Beechcraft and Learjet just to get the hang of things once again. :)

FSX FMC
There was a general FMC available for FSX, but it looks like it has been discontinuted:

There is a payware version somwhere.

ATR
I'm so pleased you lot are picking up the ATR 72. The FS2Crew pack works well with it, although, I get unstuck on the decent and landing with it.

My quick tips:
The FMC will follow the LNAV. You have to set the alt.
Power Management switch - T/O, Climb and Cruise and back to T/O for landing.
Prior to T/O, don't forget to set the power levels to 'Auto' and make sure the Gust Lock is off, otherwise you'll find yourself creeping to the end of the runway, having wanted to takeoff.
It only has a ceiling of 24000 ft, so don't go higher than that.
You can reverse thrust in mid air so you can do steep desents without picking up speed.

CPU Power
Although FSX's patched do support multiprocessor the MOST important thing to remember is there is no 'one setting for all flights' to get good performance.

If you're 36000 ft up over the desert, you don't care about the leaves on the trees or the ships in the harbour or the expressions on people's faces. That's what the 'load settings' is there for. Tailor it towards your more popular flights.

I finally appear to have sorted the random system crashes when switching views in FSX so thought I'd try taking a few screenshots. Can't match the standard of Soya's shots but I guess you've got to start somewhere!

Amazing as ever Soya.. Does it look that good and fly that smoothly on your PC?

It sure does, I do get stutters occasionally (turning too fast, over a very busy airport etc) but I simply adjust my settings to compensate. With the recent release of Nvidia Inspector, which now has a build in FPS limiter, it has improved my smoothness even more recently (which I didn't think was possible). The three biggest changes to my FSX were 1) getting a better PC (mainly faster CPU) 2) going from 1920x1080 to 2560x1600, it was stunning to see how much more detail I can now see 3) The 3rd party addons, my screen shots would look rubbish if it wasn't for the extreme talents of many of these addon developers, get a good looking aircraft with some great made scenery in the background, coupled with REX for sky & cloud effect and making a good screen shot is a piece of cake, well nearly ;).

Soya they are amazing 7,8,9 are the best for me
With no 9 being the tops.

Thank, glad you like em.

I really enjoyed (still do when I ever find the time) flying the Super 80 Pro by Coolsky plus McPhat where the first to make UHDT textures for this great aircraft. The FMC is pretty functional in that aircraft iirc.

Very nice shots to both series above, well done.

Enjoy this latest video of mine which is the 3rd video in my Busy Airport series, this time using the Leipzig\Halle airport.

Best watched at full 1080p, please feel free to comment on my youtube channel and I would very much appreciate if you could vote on the video, thanks.
