The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Nice posts guys, thanks.

Yeah I'm pretty similar, although I have invested a lot into my PC for performance so I am luckily able to run it with the majority of the sliders up to max. I don't run heavy planes though so I guess that helps with FPS. I know if i run a Airbus it'll drop to 20-25fps.

I use GEX Europe, REX for Weather (and flight plans sometimes) and I also have VFR London X but I usually fly out of local airports and trot around. VFR is my main focus at the moment, I see FSX as a training tool so I generally won't switch to IFR with FMC until I learn the rating in real life.

In terms of planes the The 150/172/182s are all good, prefer a modern 172 with glass avionics though, Much easier to manage GPS location and attitude etc as it's nice and bright.

Ease of use flight planning. Is Plan-G really good for VFR? One that connects with FSX and interacts with it's GPS would be nice to sync it up ^^

In terms of vatsim and CIX VFR club. I have signed up and hopefully can learn a lot from it, still very novice as piloting GA is still new to me, especially interacting with any ATC.

Plan-G is brilliant for VFR flying. Tim, who wrote it, is a PPL in real life and wrote it to fill the gaps other planners left behind. I'm not sure what you mean by sync'ing it up to the GPS? Plan-G does connect to FSX (via SimConnect or FSUIPC) and will track you aircraft and the AI/other planes in your vacinity. It's completely free so give it a go. http://www.tasoftware.co.uk/

Hi guys, i am really interested in getting this game as it looks amazing graphically. Hopefully it will run ok on my rig, ive never owned a flight sim before so im sure i'll be terrible. I see the deluxe version going for about £25 i guess thats the one to get? Would someone mind helping me on my way around this game like how to get mods etc? sorry to be a pain

thanks so much

EDIT

Juat read through the tweak guide on the 1st page and wow that was a lot to take in for sure :) Soya i must say your images alone have pretty much made my mind up on getting this game as well as many other amazing images they are all simply amazing! really good job guys cant believe i never saw this thread before

I saw the other day that the Gold Edition (Deluxe with Acceleration) was available on GFWL for around a 10'er. Got to be the one to get if you're ok with downloads and the offer is still on.

If you're in need of a joystick to fly with then just flight have just emailed me an offer of FSX Gold on DVD, Cyborg V1 Flight Stick an d a choice of one of 747 / Flying Club 2 (PA28-181, Duchess & R44) / Battle of Britain (Spit, Hurricane & ME109) for £55. Use code STARTER to get it at that price.

Thanks so much for that mate, i'll definatly have a look at the GFWL download version at the price for sure. Thanks as well for the joystick offer i look into that to

Thanks so much

You're welcome

Does anybody know if the GFWL licenses are like the Steam ones? You can install to as many PC's as you want but only use on one machine at a time?

Argh, multi quote doesn't seem to working properly, will have to try and do this over a few posts. Sorry if I missed a response, I do try but ask again if you need an answer.

Beautiful screens as ever :)

I'm getting there slowly, I now have REX and TEX, PMDG NGX, PMDG Jetstream (very impressed with them both), and VFR for the east of England :) Would like to get some Airports also, make a massive difference to how it all looks. The PMDG planes make the original FSX planes look like something out of FS 98 :D

Thanks, if you are after good looking aircraft then ensure not only the aircraft is well modeled but also well textured. An aircraft can have the most beautiful and complex modeling ever, but if the textures set is bad or just standard (ie 1024 texture sets), then it can be a real let down IMO. Both the 3D model *and* the texture set must be top notch for me to feel an aircraft is a looker. Nowadays only HD (2048) or indeed UHDT (4096) texture sets are worthy for a good looking FSX aircraft. In my experience the best looking aircraft to date are: PMDG's NGX (mainly with the 3 freeware UHDT texture set from McPhat) nearly all of Captain Sim's releases since their 707 now contain great looking models and textures, Carenado's HD series have been very good too. Thankfully, more and more aircraft being released nowadays are starting to sport better textures, something which was left by the wayside for way too long. Still, whenever spending your hard earned money on any aircraft, I highly recommend reading reviews on them and carefully looking at any screen shots you can find and then make up your own mind. EDIT: that reminds me, combining Horizon's latest VFR UK scenery with Earth Simulations Treescapes is very nice if you looking for UK scenery cover.

soya, how do you populate your airports? Is it AI traffic or static models? Im referring in particular to the 3rd pic of you latest batch. Im using UT2 at the mo because they supposedly have the best models for an AI package, but they are still pretty simple and not that pleasing close up., certianly nothing like what your pictures look like. I have tried using the tools provided with to swap out the AI planes with some of the proper models i have not none have really worked:

BA A321 - replaced by standard fsx model with ba livery. Very few spawn and never seem to move

BA 767 - replaced with captainsim 767. Wont spawn at all

BA 777 - replaced with freeware 777. Wont spawn at all

Ryanair 737 - replaced by NGX with ryanair livery. Does spawn and move but missing fan discs. I think thats due to an anti piracy measure (i do own the product legitimately), not really much i can do there as i guess the AI isnt loading it properly

Virgin 747 - replaced by PMDG 747. Does spawn and move but center gear bogeys are missing and nose gear is rotated 90 degrees. Again perhaps some kind of anti piracy thing?

considering mytraffic x 5.4 as i hear they have improved a few models significantly (i had 5.2 and thought it looked awful), and it uses flight plans now instead of direct routes (another thing i like about ut2) but i cant find anything really conclusive on it yet

I use Just Flight's Traffic X, although you can setup flight plans and call up most models in your airplanes folder, you cannot seem to control which gate they pop up at. So I only tend to use Traffic X with its basic models for when I want FPS friendly traffic around (usually at a large airport). I also use something called AirtrafficFX, a rather neat little AI program which can do 2 things, 1) it allows for AI traffic (with a premade flight plan) with any model from your airplanes to fly around the airport of your choosing 2) this is really neat, it shows a map of the airport you are at and all its parking spaces, you can fill in any of the parking spaces with any model from your airplane folder, the neat part is that it acts like a static aircraft, so it doesn't use any AI routines hence saving on CPU power, but it really makes your airport look very cool. DO NOTE; not all models behave as they should, ie some have their landing gear missing, some do other strange things but most work pretty well. Also, having high detail payware models as either AI or static models at your airport will hit your FPS rather heavily. I found that it is best to stick with the model and texture set of the actual aircraft you are flying (in a sense duplicating it several time over the airport) as that seems to be most FPS friendly, as soon as you start using multiple models and especially multiple textures sets (ie, different liveries) your FPS will take a nose dive and you may even experience OOM errors (this happens easily if you use multiple HD liveries at the same location as that swamps the poor old 32-bit coded FSX program).

You could also use Mudpond's freeware program called Formation Tool, it can place upto 4 different aircraft (again you can choose any model) infront of your current aircraft and you can make them take off or let them just sit there.

Hope that helps.

I got this for my wife to fly so don't want to spend any cash in case she loses interest.

I have an i7 920@4Ghz with a GeForce470 in it. Will that have enough oomph to cope with things at 1920x1200?

It should do but depends on 3 main factors, how your FSX.CFG is tweaked according to your PC (more tips on that in this thread), what kind and how many addons your have active during flying (the more is happening the harder the PC has to work) and last but not least, depending at what stage of the flight your are, it may run smooth during mid-flight (less happening so you can really turn up the settings) but when landing at large & busy airports you may have to adjust the settings to cope with smooth flight.

PS. It is NOT about how many FPS you can get out of FSX that matter, although on average anything above 20+ FPS is pretty good, but it is the consistency of those FPS that matter, in other words, smooth and judder free flying. The most common cause of judders, PC can't cope with what your throw at it, badly tweaked cfg/settings at the stage of the flight you are at, banking your aircraft real quick or changing views rapidly (think in terms of view point, the steadier your view point is, the easier your PC handles the flight).

Hope that helps.

What do people want out of flight simulator x?

Do you want:
Pure beauty or sheer performance? (e.g. beauty, maxing out everything but only at 15-20fps or sheer performance, making sure you get 60+ fps)

Realistic settings (Addons, ASE/REX Weather) to maximise your simulator experience?

How about the planes you fly, do you fly a large amount of planes in the simulator for fun or do you stick to one or two aircraft you really enjoy/want to learn.

Are you a pilot, or aspire to be one, or are you simply an enthusiast?

If you are a pilot, general aviation, chartered or commercial?

I love airplanes, my goal in life is to study Avionics at uni (Engineering) and get my PPL. However, the idea of chartered does get me excited. I play FSX and mainly fly the cessna 150/172 and when I feel a bit adventurous the cessna mustang, As I love it's modern avionics.

I've done a few patterns in Airbus A320 and even took off in the A380 (didnt land it) and I feel these are fun planes, but they're so big. I don't really enjoy Boeing, the 747 is iconic but just not for me. The 737 is small enough but again, I prefer Airbus. Mainly because it's fly by wire.

So, thoughts?

The beauty about FSX, or flight sim in general, people can get many things out of it, depending on their personal preference. Also, there is so much scope to do something a bit different in flight sim, there is always something else to do or to learn. I personally see this hobby as a future investment, at the moment I am mostly interested in getting a sim that is as smooth and real looking as I can make it, then enjoy the view as I take a simply flight with minimal effort. But later in life I can start to learn about proper procedures, about SID & STARS, about fuel consumption and flight plans etc. In FSX your world is your oyster so to speak. At this point in time I call myself just an enthusiast with minimal flight knowledge but with a good eye for capturing screen shots and sharing a passion with other like minded people. IMO the best thing about Flight Sim is its community, anything from payware 3rd party addons, to freeware addons, to livery painter, to forum & screen shot posters, it really is a living breathing world with plenty of others to share and enjoy it with.

As for the beauty vs performance, I think for most people it is a balance. Get your sim to look the way you want it but have it perform adequately during most flights, working with the hardware you can currently afford. FPS is irrelevant as it is more about smooth flying with the highest detail you can get away with.

My 2cs.

A pleasure, welcome to the flight sim world. I hope this thread will give you plenty of info, ideas and insights. My main recommendation is start simply, shop around for the best prices (whether buying FSX itself, hardware or any other addon after the fact) and slowly in time, expand both your knowledge of the sim, flying procedures and addons. It will take patience, you will get crashes and you will find limitations, which you will overcome in time. Feel free to share/ask question in this thread, but be sure the read through the whole thread as there is much useful information plus links that will help you out. But like I said, start simple, find FSX first at the best possible price, have a play with it then in time expand from there. Best of luck and enjoyment.

Anyone come across any decent offers on addons recently??

Not really, most of the offers were over the Xmas period. Just aware of some recent high entry releases, IRIS released their version of the F-15E I believe, highly detailed model with 4096 texture sets, Carenado released another HD series GA aircraft, a jetprop called Malibu, which looks very nice, McPhat have released 3 freeware UHDT textures for the NGX plus just today another World Airline HD series for the PMDG 747. Also worth keeping an eye on the Aerosoft shop (they just released Bronco X, which I have and also their recent Pitts is very nice) plus they have several releases coming out spread over this year. On the freeware side, Blue Sky Scenery are updating their entire photoreal texture set (higher detail) and releasing it on a new provider (megaupload their previous provider went belly up) and each section is at a larger more convenient DL (@500mb).

That's about it for now I think.

Please can you simmers help me as I cannot get any help on the official forums. I got my FlightOne UltimateTraffic2 (UT2) addon on DVD from Amazon. I put the DVD in and installed it and then started it up.

The first thing I see is this:
Ut2error.png

And then a minute later I see this:

Ut2error2.png

I have registered on the official support forum. The only way you can register is by typing in the serial code printed on the inside of the DVD case. This proves you have got a genuine copy. Of course I registered easily. I did post on the Flight One UT2 forums but have had no answer so Im hopin the OcUK simheads might be able to help. Others on the UT2 forum have had the same issue but the standard reply to that seems to be to boot into Safe Mode and reinstall - I have done all of that with no luck.

Been flying for ages in an empty sim world and eager to populate it. Why wont this addon just work :( I heard something floating around that this is a *Windows 7 64bit issue* where its WINDOWS that thinks its not licensed or something like that. Is this true?

If any of you had the same issue with this addon could you tell me how you fixed it?

Thanks!

Hello again, i finally got my copy of FSX from GFWL for £10 so was really happy with that. Left it downloading over night on my measly 2.5mb connection :) 11 hrs later and i have it. I haven't tried installing it yet as i have just sold my only 2 monitors, im waiting for my new Asus 24" to arrive on monday form ocuk.

I am slowly getting through this thread and it really is a fab read for sure, one little thing im slighty confused over so apoligies for having to ask. Will GFWL auto update this game for me when i try and install for the 1st time? I see its best to install with no patches then load up game for the test flight then close down and reboot but i wasn't sure if GFWL would go ahead and just update it straight away.

Do i really need to get the acceleration pack? or will the standard patches pretty much fix and known bugs? The planes on offer and the extra missions isn't something that is of interest to me at the moment as i would like to try and find my own planes from around the web

Im guessing this might be a good 1st freeware addon to look to?

Thanks again and sorry if i have repeated any common questions

Wasn't the GFWL the Gold Edition of FSX? If so it has acceleration with it. With the DVD version they shipped Acceleration on a separate disc, I believe, so it was a 2 part install. My guess is the GFWL version will install with Acceleration in it, that includes SP2 so there would be no further Microsoft patches to add.

Edit: One thing that came as an optional extra with FSX Deluxe was the SDK. No idea if that auto installs as well or is even part of the GFWL version.

Yea thats a good freeware addon to start with that will improve the stock textures. Be warned that its all downhill from here :) Because the freeware for FSX is IMMENSE and once you get goin say goodbye to social life :p

Theres TONS of sites out there but this is one of the big ones. Free registration and then hit the FILES button on top: http://www.flightsim.com/

A tip - once you have installed FSX and its running fine, create another folder and just make backups of these folders:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FSX-
>Effects
>Gauges
>Scenery\World\Texture <--- can be a big backup, depends if you have room on HD
>SimObjects
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You do not HAVE to do this but a lot of addons affect these files and speaking from experience its handy to have the fresh default versions of these files handy. You can even chuck them on a DVD. Of course if you have a massive drive (maybe an external one) just image the entire FSX default installation.

Hi Picnic, it was the gold edition i downloaded i didnt realize that acceleration came with it so thats kinda cool :). Thanks so much again for finding that for me as i see the dvd seems to retail for double that on most sites. Nice to know my game will be fully up to date then pretty much out the box.

One quick thing regarding acceleration, im guessing it will give me an option to install it maybe? the reason i ask is will i need to load up the game patchless 1st so to speak and reboot then install acceleration or can i install it all in one go?

Thanks again for all your kind help Picnic

lol i can see what you mean, i haven't even installed the game and i feel like im addicted already :D. thanks so much for the kind link i will sign up there for sure. I guess the payware version of rex is a must have addon?

I have just bought two 64gb SSD's so i have windows 7 on one and the other for my games so hopefully this will run well all be it my ssd's are running on sata II

Thanks a million again everyone

Sorry I don't know. I'd have hoped it was a single install and all done in one go but I've not got it. Bought FSX when it first came out and subsequently bought Acceleration.

No worries at all thanks for all your help thus far im very grateful.

I am just about to purchase rex 2.0 and download the free update they have released for it as well so im thinking of throwing another HD in my rig pretty much just for this game!

Am i right in saying that with regards to scenary add ons you cant really get "one" for the whole game but you just download say an amercian state or a specific area you would like?

The thing is i work at Stansted airport and im trying to find a good scenary add on as well as the airport itself. Im also trying to look for something like a southern england scenary pack as i want to start close to home :)

One last thing, with regards to traffic would you have a personal preference between traffic x and ultimate traffic 2 i cant decide :)

Thanks again

In regards to Ultimate Traffic 2 problem, I have never used it so I am unsure myself what the possible solution would be. Perhaps you could try and install the program under a different PC with a different OS if you suspect W7 64bit, although if you run under admin that would be unlikely. I presume the DVD box was sealed, so no1 else perhaps has used the same serial/install before? Perhaps a previous installment or conflict of a previous program, AI traffic or otherwise, might cause a conflict? Search popular FS sim forums for possible answers, AVSIM is pretty good and doing searches on these forums may prove fruitful. Good luck.

As for the new install of FSX, if you are unsure what version it has installed, check your aircrafts. If you have access to the F-18 Hornet, P-51 Mustang and the EH-101 Helicopter, then you have Acceleration install and do not need to worry about patches. If not, you need to double check with the seller and read any small print etc.

I already spoke about this somewhere in this thread regarding installation of FSX plus addons/scenery and the likes of FSX, in regards to precious HD & SSD space. I really recommend checking out the info. (in short, DO NOT install REX on your fastest drive, which is probably where you have FSX installed, install it to an install/storage drive, once you install REX and choose different themes/textures, it will automatically replace the default FSX ones thus having the textures of your choosing on the FSX install drive).

Also, once you devout time on a decent install (again, read this thread for link and suggestion on how to properly install FSX & addons, especially the link to Nick's guide is very good) ensure you start making backups of the important stuff, safest is complete backup of FSX and backup copies of FSX.cfg, Scenery.cfg & DDL.xml. TBH don't worry to much at the start, as you can always change things later. I have been using FSX for nearly 4 years now, in that time I done 3 major re-installs of everything but each time learning more and having a better setup. I am already thinking of doing it again sometime this year. As I mentioned, take it a step at a time and prepare to be patient. Good luck.

PS. on a side note, I do have several spare FS related items that I do not use or need anymore and they are gathering dust. For instance, a boxed TrackIR 4 with Clip Pro (bought it just before TrackIR 5 came out and only used a few times), several Just Flight's Boxed titles including VFR Real Scenery The Collection (which I have since replaced with the more expensive but higher detailed Horizon VFR sceneries), plus boxed C-130 Hercules, Captain 727 & 757 (I now own them all directly from CS). Plus other hardware pieces of flight sim that an enthusiast might be interested in buying. Please DO NOT post in this thread regarding these items as that is not what this thread is for plus I think it is also against the rules, but feel free to email me in trust if you want to know more.

I used to live just down the road from Stansted Airport, you should check out the UK2000 Stansted Xtreme scenery, it is absolutely spot on (as are all their other sceneries!)

Thanks so much for that link mate! I'll definatly purchase that for sure when i get home tonight.

Thanks again everyone for helping me get started with this game, im very grateful for all your kind help
