The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

You can get free trials with the UK2000 scenery which is good. Their scenery is top rate.

Really? I never knew that thanks for letting me know. I was watching a video clip of the gatwick version and it did look very impressive i must say. How do there trials actually work if you dont mind me asking? I think the full version is around £15 if my memory is serving me well :)

@ liamcrane - something small but really excellent to get you started:

FS Water configurator (freeware)
http://www.strikingsoftware.com/fswc.shtml

FS Water Configurator is a freeware addon utility for Microsoft Flight Simulator X designed to modify the look of the reflective water in the game. It will increase the realism of the reflections and lighting of the water and is completely controllable by the user. If you prefer glass like reflections or very subtle water reflections, FSWC is the utility for you.

@ Soya - cheers m8 Ill try out your suggestions :). Its the first addon Ive had this many problems with. IMO F1 need to sort this out. When you spend the £ on a DVD addon you just expect it to work no excuses - all the others do!!

You also get a simpler version of Stansted in the VFR Airfields (not sure if that's Vol 1 or 2, it must be close to the boundary) If VFR is your thing then get the Hoizon Gen X Photo Scenery for England and Wales (Scotland if you're feeling really flush) and add the Earth Simulations TreeScapes. Along with the VFR Airfields it makes a very good representation of flying here. The Airfields come in 3 volumes aligned to the Generation X England/Wales volumes,

Really good freebee for VFR is the Air Navigation Objects, if it's not hosted on the CIX VFR Club site there will be a link to it.

For scenery further away, mainly for VFR type stuff check out Orbx.

@liamcrane - There are a couple of Flight Sim clubs in the UK. If you can get to one there are generally people with systems that'll only be too happy to talk you through what they have and demonstrate it. The nearest one I know of to you was meeting near Gatwick but I know of clubs in Devon, Bristol (I go to this one) and one I can never remember up North.

Wow thanks for that katana that looks great!! Really appreciate the link. Looking forward to getting some screenies up once im up and running.

No prob, a simple utility and I like how they designed its GUI to look just like FSX. You can create your own water settings using the sliders and then save them. Time to tool about in a seaplane now :D

Without a doubt Orbx has completely transformed the sim. In fact I find it impossible to fly in a non-Orbx area. The FPS can take a beating depending on the power of your machine but with some tweaks its easily manageable and the visuals are just awesome! If those guys got together with some ex-FSX employees and made a their own sim it would be something!

for the stansted area, depending on how much you want to spend:

REX. pretty weather, though it looks like you already have that.

uk2000 stansted xtreme as mentioned above. also worth checking the other xtreme airports they have there

VFR airfields vol 2. Includes about 80 or so local and major airfields in the middle of england. because stansted is close to the border between two products, you may want to consider getting vol 1 as well

VFR genX vol 2. Photoreal scenery for the same area covered by the airfields pack. Again may want to look at vol 1 as well. Downside is that it removes the default autogen so can look a bit balnd from some angles. The following packages really spruce it up:

Earthsimulations Treescapes. Accurate placement of autogen trees. Makes rural areas really spring to life. split into the same vol1/2/3 areas as the VFR packages, but i think its only something like 16quid for all three (i got them for a fiver off ebay...). It does have a fairly big hit on the FPS, but can be adjusted with the autogen slider

FSX power project 4.0. Freeware. Accurate coverage of global power plant chimneys, cooling towers, wind turbines, and the UK national grid pylons. Blends in quite well with the treescapes

UK ANO objects. Freeware. Mostly aerials and what not that are over 300 feet modelled and accurately placed. It does contain cooling towers that do clash with the power project ones, i would reccomend removing the files that start with CT (i think...) from this package.

UK refineries. Freeware. Quite detailled but again a little resource heavy. Basically it does what it says in the name - all UK oil refineries are included.

Aerosoft VFR londonX. VERY resource heavy. Need a pretty dam powerful pc for this one. Covers every building in a 120km2 zone of london. if you can run it well then its brilliant.

basically everything is covered there, except for a verson of treescapes that coveres accurate autogen buildings

If you want to try further afield, i would give earthsimulations other packages a whirl. I haven't tried them personally, but they look stunning. shawbury fields, alderney, scilly and guernsey in full 3d.

Thanks for that detailed post thingemajib. I have just checked out the VFR airfields and Stansted seems to come under volume 2 where as all the other London airports are in vol 1. I see what you mean by being right on the border! :)

I must admit i really like the look of the xtreme airfields there details look pretty much spot on. Just been looking at the screenshots of xtreme stansted and i must say from working at the airport near enough every day i cant belive just how accurate the finer detail is even the inside screenies really are amazingly spot on!

I am thinking of buying the extreme version of stansted and then maybe just the VRF volume 1 for the other london airports. The problem now is after seeing just how good xtreme stansted looks i want xtreme all london airports lol

Arggg decisons decisons

EDIT
Just seen VFR Photographic Scenery GenX Volume 2 - Central England & Mid Wales FSX /FS2004 on ebay for £10 would this be classes as a good addon? Also just seen that the flight store have some good offers on xtreme airports as well a double pack of gatwick and heathrow is a £5 saving so better than nothing i guess

Expensive hobby eh?! :p

Thread needs moar screenshots! :D

Installed Ground Environment X (Europe) this morning, does a fantastic job of defining the roads and far far better textures for fields. I also cranked up the autogen to get the full effect and suprisingly my measely E7200 did not struggle too much - infact I might keep it on full!

Thanks, although if I'm honest the JPG screenshots seem to clear up some of the dreaded jaggy edges I actually get in game - especially on the trees. Desperate for a CPU/MB/RAM upgrade though, I can't run the more complexed addons such as PMDG, it's just too choppy for me to enjoy. Just as well I prefer to fly the smaller props really!

What you looking to upgrade to mate? Im thinking of perhaps upgrading to an i5 system soon but i want to see how my 5850 and PII 955 quad copes first.

I have just been looking at GEX looks pretty good i must say, what kind of scenery add ons does it actually give tho? or does it just improve any scenery add ons you have installed? Im trying to find out the price of it now but my basket of add ons is getting rather large and costly! This is a real addiction for me already and i haven't even got a joystick yet as there is sooo many to choose from.

Would love to see some more screenies as well :)

An i5 too - got my eye on one of the bundles on OcUK when I can afford it!

It primarily adds much better global ground textures as the default ones are very dull if you ask me. Also adds autogen (trees, buildings etc). The best thing about it for me is the textures are the same resolution as the default ones, so it does not seem to have affected my FPS what so ever. REX handles the taxiways/apron textures so this is just for all the ground inbetween airports, if that makes sense.

I can imagine your basket is growing steadily - getting it up and running with a joystick should take priority though! I got FSX on release so unless you have deep pockets (and a hell of a lot of patience setting everything up) building it up over time is probably the best way.

Thanks for that, i think i am going to go for REX, UTX and UK2000 scenery for Stansted, Heathrow & Gatwick as well as flytampa's ST Martaan airport. I have got the ENB mod as well but i dont know if its the right thing lol its an exe file enbseries fsxfs9.exe. Downloaded a few free aircrafts from flightsim, got a basic 737-800 ryanair and an airbus 340 which im looking forward to :). I also downloaded the aircraft installer but im not to sure if i trust these kind of things, i think i would perhaps rather just copy and paste files myself to the correct location.

As for joysticks im looking at the SPEEDLINK Black Widow Flightstick and the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Joystick. Im not to hot on joysticks so if anyone could perhaps reccomend me a good value for money one id be really grateful.

Good luck with the system upgrade save those pennies!!

Great screenshots robmol.

Can someone set up an OCUK Virtual Airline?

Or can we meet virtually for a flight on Gamespy or VATSIM?

I'm now interested in the PMDG Jetstream 41. I think that may be my next purchase.

Just had a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Joystick arrive and the wife is delighted with it!

My wife is only delighted by joysticks made by Ann Summers. :(

!bluetonic!

The J41 is a great plane, there are a few bugs and quirks that PMDG seem to have ignored, but for your short hops its a great hands on plane.

It has no Vnav so its very much 'hands on' flying, and the FMC leaves a little to be desired!

Im up for a flight online at somepoint, but im mainly in the 737 now, Not been in the J41 for ages so not sure how I would get on!! :s
