The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

does anyone know if its possible to have all the addons installed on a different drive? I have 2 ssd's one for windows and another one for games which is where fsx is installed. I was thinking would i be able to use the mk link command to point all the addon folders from the fsx directory on my ssd to a folder on my spare mechnical 500gb drive?

For example D is my games ssd and E is my 500gb mechnical drive

mklink /J "D:\Microsoft\fsx\(what ever sub folder the scenery folder is i dont know :))" "E:\fsx addons"

Would this work do you think?

Thanks again

The J41 is a great plane, there are a few bugs and quirks that PMDG seem to have ignored, but for your short hops its a great hands on plane.

It has no Vnav so its very much 'hands on' flying, and the FMC leaves a little to be desired!

Im up for a flight online at somepoint, but im mainly in the 737 now, Not been in the J41 for ages so not sure how I would get on!! :s

I haven't bought the J41, just considering it. As said before, I'm happy in BN2, ATR72 or iFly 737NG.

Just been looking at the 737NGX 600/700 and the 800/900 models they look stunning! Only problem is they are a bit pricey but definatly worth saving up for. Spent my last few pennies on REX :) so just finding my way around that at the mo. Would there be a good free alternate to tick me over until i get the 737NGX?

There's no doubt that the PMDG one looks, and from the reviews is awesome.

I use the iFly 737 NG. Going from standard FSX planes, it's a lot to get used to. I used the ATR as a transition to learn the FMC, engine startup procedures etc. This proved very helpful.

The model I tend to fly in the package is the BBJ3. This has the HUD and the Autoland. I ruined a potential moment of glory when landing at Bristol in fog on VATSIM. I must have had something miss configured and the aircraft wasn't doing what I expected it to do on the ILS. I had to go around and ended up with doing a manual approach.

I'm still learning to appreciate the level of detail. I started climbing to quite high heights, but hadn't turned the air conditioning packs on. So I had a light telling me about cabin pressurisation. They even say that with 'winglets', you can see a 6% reduction in fuel consumption. Yes pricey, but in comparison, you get what you pay for.

I've also got the FS2Crew Voice and this add even more depth to an awesome aircraft.

Guys, I need help with my FSX please.

Everything's been going fine. A few days ago I was approaching NY with Manhattan X scenery. My system threw a paddy and crashed. I restarted and started another flight only to disciver that the pop up windows like ATC and kneeboard are miniature and garbled. Screenie shows what I mean.

It's doing my head in. So far I have cleared the fsx.cfg file and restarted to make a new one and reinstalled GFX drivers. All to no avail. I have'nt reinstalled FSX yet as I have many add-ons and it's a hassle re-installing them. Can you just copy out the add-on and scenery folders and paste them back in following a re-install?

Soya, I know this has probably been covered in previous posts, but how do you get all the ground work when you arrive at gate. Refueling, Catering, Luggage etc.

Cheers.

The 2 programs that currently provide Ground Services for the aircraft you are flying are Aerosoft's AES (Recently updated to v2.21 to include better models and animation) and the very recently released GSX from GSDT, which I had a quick look at and also looks very good. From what I can tell, GSX is free to use for 3 different airports plus all the airports that you have bought from FSDT, if you want it to work for nearly every airport (read their site for restrictions) then you will need to buy it, $29.99 I think. Whereas AES works slightly different, it also allows for a few free small airports to be used unlimited but to activate for other airports (it can ONLY be used for specific payware airports all the Aerosoft airports of course but none of the FTX airports at all, again, read up in its limitations) you need to buy credits from Aerosoft, I think a credit pack (10 credits) cost @10 euros and you can spend them on certain payware airports you have, small airports usually 1-3 credits, larger ones 4-5 credits. This method of buying credits can get very expensive, I personally bought @8 credit packs (admittedly mostly when Aerosoft had sales on but still spend @50 euros to get all the credits I wanted).

I would personally take a good look at both of them but TBH, for anyone looking for some decent ground service, I think GSX seems the better buy, but do check it out for yourself. If I knew in advance, then I don't think I would have forked out so many credits for AES considering its restrictions and cost but then again, it has been out much longer and I have had much pleasure using it, so C'est La Vie.

Hard to tell, don't think I recall seeing anything like that in my time with FSX. I would suggest switching to full screen and seeing if it also happens, try different resolutions. If the graphics are still perfect but only the text within FSX is screwed up, then I would seem to point to some kind of font corruption. My suggestion is to browse the popular FS sim forums and do a search for similar problems, it would be unlikely you have a unique problem. If you do decide to go the backup way, just copying the relevant folders over a new FSX install is unlikely to work for most payware addons. Nearly all payware addons to my knowledge don't just write data within the FSX folder but often make their own folder within the user area of the main drive and probably other markers with the FSX users directories. Still if worse comes to worse, you can try and see which work. Good luck.

Soya... I have been meaning to get into this once and for all. I need your input - whats the best way to start learning how to fly in FSX? Should I just do the tutorials? Any tips for a complete novice? I just have FSX and the acceleration pack + Saitek X-52 joystick.

The tutorials are a good way to start! Also check out this site:

You have a great joystick. A tip I will give you is: make SMALL control inputs. It works the same way in real life. Novices make the mistake of hoinking the stick from left to right all the way. You are not dogfighting in an F-16 :)

You will only haul ass on the controls like this in a dire emergency. DO it all the time and your passengers will thank you with a flood of barf :D

Small movements. So for example if you are on a landing approach and are drifting to the right of the runway just do a small correction (stick-deflection) to the left and then back to the center. Dont haul the stick all the way to the left. Same when you are taking off and find yourself drifting.

@ Colasanto - the F-18 is great for a default plane! If I remember right it was made by Captain Sim?

Shouldn't you be monitoring 122.8 for Unicom when no controllers are available?

depends on the aerodrome/aiport youre going to. when i did my training in goodyear there were approximately 10 public uncontrolled areodromes in the area where we operated freqently. three of these used 122.8 for a ctaf, and that was busy and confusing enough when you are trying to join the circuit at one place and there are other pilots making calls for other places. If every single place used the same freq it would have been a nightmare. off the top of my head other places used 122.7, 122.6, 130.62 and others for a ctaf, so its quite normal tp use different freq's

I'm sure you're right real world but I thought VATSIM used just the one frequency.

However I see from the VATSIM forum that I'm not 100% correct. However neither Birmingham to Jersey are in SA or Brazil ;)

Q. The Code of Conduct says UNICOM is on 122.800, but I was told that this isn't always the case. Why do Brazil and South Africa use a different frequency?

A. Actually, paragraph B.7 of the Code of conduct states:

Quote:
Pilots flying through uncontrolled airspace should set frequency to 122.80 or other designated UNICOM frequency until they come under Air Traffic Control coverage.

In the case of Brazil and South Africa, different frequencies are used because 122.800 is a frequency used by ATC in those countries and published charts and procedures detail 122.800 for use. The designated UNICOM frequency in Brazil is 123.450, in South Africa it is 124.800.
