The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

What Star do you use to Land at Heathrow 27L & 27R? I work in central London and see all the planes coming over the city. The reason I ask. I took a flight from Paris to Heathrow last night. I choose the Big Star but for some reason it took me left(towards Farnborough way but not as far) and then took me back up towards Putney/Richmond, levelled up with the runway and activated my VOR LOC and took me straight in. I Landed fine but I don’t think that’s the right route though. Unless I choose the wrong Trans?

Blue, I bought EFB, looking forward to having a go with that tonight(have played with the demo)but I’m sure now I will get my routing 100% and get to choose the proper sids and stars.

Hi Vuvu, the STAR you use depends on the last waypoint on your arrival route. For example if KENET is your last waypoint then you will be able to work out that you will be flying on the BNN1D (Bovingdon) STAR. In your flightplan KENET would probably be the last waypoint on the airway that you are using, then the STAR helps ATC direct traffic with the use of restrictions, specific routing etc.

Some STARs will say do not proceed beyond XYZ waypoint until directed by ATC. Typically they will then give you radar vectors onto the ILS.

Does that make sense?

Edit: Where you see the aircraft are they likely to be on the final approach track? At Heathrow they can be ILS established while stay a fair bit out so it's hard to say. Can you post your flightplan from last night and I'll have a look?

One from the FS9 days - randomly found it, must be a good 5 years old.

First pic is a great action shot. What ground textures/scenery are you using?

For ground textures I use these freeware ones: https://sites.google.com/site/aimecreations/ALCreations

They're MUCH better than Ground Environment X (which is payware). It takes a while to download all the packs from Simviation (comes to around 5GB in total) but well worth it IMO.

What do you mean by scenery? The only shot with addon-scenery is the wingview shot of the NGX departing Innsbruck, which is using Aerosoft's Innsbruck.

Cool...Are they heavy on your system, like do you get FPS hits/crashes? That scenery is amongst the freeware you download from that link?

Not really, I don't think ground textures really affect FPS that much, so you should be fine. The only possibility is that it could give you more blurries - since the files are of higher resolution than the default. Yeah, you have to download the 50cm files, then put the 30cm ones on top. He hasn't done all the textures in 30cm, so you still need the 50cm ones - but make sure you install the 50cm ones first, then the 30cm; if you do it the other way around you'll overwrite the higher resolution 30cm textures.

Good stuff. Love the wide cockpit shot.

Thanks!

Ringo hello mate, thanks for that. It does makes sense. Maybe when we online again, we can open the some charts for Heathrow and we can discuss together. I’m about 95% understanding ;)

I don’t have the flight plan. I just found a route on Vatsim and then picked the appropriate ones in the FMC. I’m now using Electronic Flight Bag and it’s so much better. I did two flights last night and it was perfect.

I am about t'rest of week in the evenings, we can get online for more ATC practice.

I’m around tonight, Thursday after 10 and all of the weekend.

I can’t view any of them photos for some reason??

In summary:
1. Install FSX w/SP2
2. Get a Gamespy a/c - done thru FSX
3. Get a VATSIM account - done externally through VATSIM UK
4. Get the Mumble client software, use a headset w/ mic
5. Read these forums to see when we're next on.
