*****THE OFFICIAL "SPEC ME" THREAD*****

I've already had a little thread of my own, but I just wanted to bump this excellent thread of information. And to ask for any final input on my spec, which I've given some thought.

finalspec.jpg

It's intended for gaming mainly.

No need for speakers/monitor, going to buy it locally.

CPU: OS'ing it to 4ghz. Not planning on getting quad-core.
HDD: The two 320gb Harddrives going to be set for Raid0 or Raid1, dunno, I'll find out later when they arrive! 1TB one for storage.
PSU: 1000W too much for this spec?

Is anything important missing here?

Thanks for all the advice given to me already by other experienced users. :)

Overclocking: No

Could I ask why you guys spec the P5Q Pro Mobo over the others in the same Asus P5Q Class?

Is it superior to the others?

The P5Q below it; this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

has the worst placement of a 24pin connector ever, thus no-one talks about it and pretends it doesn't exist.

Any P45 above the Pro is a waste of money usually, as the whole point of buying of buying a P45 is for good economy, plus the Pro has all the features you need.

Thanks for clearing that one up :)

I'm still umming and arring a bit on my 9550 quad system spec and the mobo was prolly the greyest area :)

Hi there, im new here, my friends have bought good pc's from here, and im stuck with my laptop with an intel 950 GMA So i think i want a desktop.

BUDGET:300-500

Processor:yes (dual core would be fine)
Motherboard:yes
Memory:yes (2gb is ok for me i think)
Graphics Card(s):Yes please.
TV Card:no
Hard Drive(s):yes
Optical Drive(s):dvd r/w
Cooling: necessary?
Water Cooling:no
Cable(s):i have no idea.....
Sound Card:necessary?
Controller Card(s):no
Case:yes
Power Supply:yes

Keyboard:no
Mouse:no
Headset:no
Speakers:yea(on board?)
Monitor(s):no
Operating System: hmm well i dont think getting 64 bit is such a gd idea, i like 32 bit for the time being , as computability is an issue with this stuff. Your experiences?

Uses:gaming( no too heavy, just casual, dnt wanna play too much urm then yea rest of casual browsing and such.... and downloading lol....)
Overclocking:yea? (makes the comp run faster right?, if its really necessary)

Thank you!

BUDGET: up to £1200 (or maybe a bit over if it's worth it bang/buck)

Processor: Yes.
Motherboard: Yes
Memory: Yes - looking at minimum of 4Gb - maybe 8.
Graphics Card(s): Yes
TV Card: No
Hard Drive(s): Yes - for Windows and games. Will move storage drive over from current rig.
Optical Drive(s): Yes - DVD is fine (no interest in Blu-Ray at the moment)
Cooling: Yes
Water Cooling: No.
Cable(s): Yes
Sound Card: Possibly - is onboard any good these days?
Controller Card(s): No
Case: Yes. I'll probably go with the Antec 300.
Power Supply: Already have a Thermaltake 750W in my old rig, but if this isn't enough, add a new PSU to the spec

Keyboard: No
Mouse: No
Headset: No
Speakers: No
Monitor(s): No - still have my trusty 21" CRT!
Operating System: Will go with Vista 64 bit. Probably Home Premium, unless any reason to choose something else?

Uses: Gaming.
Overclocking: Not done it before, but prepared to give it a go, especially with the benefits from doing so with Intel at the moment...

Other queries;
I generally don't upgrade my rig that often (haven't touched my current build since I assembled it >3 years ago), so should I go quad core now?
Re: graphics cards - I'm leaning towards the GTX280. It might not quite match the 4870X2, but I understand that not all games can fully use the dual card? I can always add another 280 in a year or so's time if I need it (and the price has come down)...

Oh, and one final but important bit - if there's a suitable pre-built system on Overclockers, I don't object to paying them a "small" fee for assembling it for me... :) [/lazy]

Edit: typos and adding more info re: drives.

Overclocking:yes if it's stable
Thanks Guys

Thanks so much!, is there any way to make it cheaper?? im a casual gamer, i dont need anything too high spec. I should be able to do the normal stuff such as multi tasking and wordprocess..... im sure it can :D

Ive transferred this from a previous thread as wanting to close the order out and get it shipped! I have a 1080i HD 36" TV, the computer should be spec'd towards gaming/engineering applications/media entertainment (hence the need for a HTPC type case)
Ive choosen the watercooled i7 route.
Am hoping for the best graphics card on the market with as much ram i can squeeze into a lovely HTPC case.
Some viewpoints on the chosen components would be helpful, along with anything ive missed. Is Vista 64 preffered?
