A Quad would be much better for Photoshop, but you want the PC for games as well...so thats the best I could do unfortunately.

EDIT: Add this HDD: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...ue 250GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD2500AAKS)

What a great thread - I didn't want to start my own and seeing what other people are looking at in my price range, in one thread, is very very helpful

BUDGET: £300-400

Processor: yes
Motherboard: yes
Memory: yes
Graphics Card(s): yes, would like DVI-D output for future use
TV Card: no
Hard Drive(s): no, I have a 320GB SATA
Optical Drive(s): no, I have 2 DL DVD re-writers
Cooling: yes, have coolers but not sure if they will work with latest chips
Water Cooling: no
Cable(s): no
Sound Card: yes, but happy to use on-board sound for a while if this affect budget
Controller Card(s): no
Case: no
Power Supply: no

Keyboard: no
Mouse: no
Headset: no
Speakers: no
Monitor(s): no
Operating System: no, may have to look at Vista if too many DirectX10 games come out that I want

Uses: gaming (shooters, strategy, racing) & some general use; I have a Linux machine that will do downloads and day-to-day stuff like internet, etc.
Overclocking: not immediately but I'm happy to do to increase my bang for the buck!

based on the £500 build from the weekly build thread, I've added up £343 (w/ VAT) the m/b, cpu, ram, video and cooler, and these choices seem great, but I'm not sure how 'gaming' that setup would be, I'm guessing pretty good. I'm not that familiar with Intel's latest stuff - I've been an AMD guy for years.

For reference at the moment I'm on AMD FX-53, Abit Third Eye m/b, 2GB ram and x1600 Pro, so almost anything will be a good jump in performance.

Hi there.

Do you not need a case or PSU (power supply unit)?
What PSU will you be using with this new setup?

Intel is really the way to go at the moment. I have made comments below the spec;

2dqiz5.jpg

You should be able to OC the E7300 CPU nicely, it's meant to be a great CPU for the price. If you really want to push the CPU to it's limits then you might need a better CPU cooler (the one I spec'd is very good for the price though).
The 4850 is a great card and you should be able to play all/most games on high depending on the size of your monitor. Anything below 24" and it'll be perfect. :)

Hi, thanks for the info! Really really helps :)

I've got an Antec Lanboy case (vintage at this point) which is doing really well for me still, too many mods on it to sell so I'm keeping it for a bit longer. I'll have to check if my PSU is OK with the latest power requirements, I know it has 24+4 connection and the separate 4-pin plug the P4's needed, but I understand the latest m/b's require another 4-pin plug... so I might have to dosh out for a PSU

As for monitor, I'll probably get something like the 22" Hyundai (£130 w/ VAT) listed in the weekly build thread's full system list, but it's not something I'll get right away because of the budget so I need DVI or plain VGA inputs for now, to work with my current 19" flatscreen.
