***The Official Starfield Thread*** (As endorsed by TNA)

Vkd3d (the dx12->vulkan translation layer) developer has put up a change log for a new version that is about to be (released here) and also a pull request with more information about what he discovered about all the awful things that starfield is doing to GPU drivers (here).

Wait hyper threading actually reduces performance? Wtf

And yeh my 4070ti is being severely underutilized. Not getting anywhere near its power limit.

I sincerely hope this isn't AMD intentionally hobbling Intel and Nvidia.
In Fallout 4 AMD cards are massively behind Nvidia ones and everyone said it was poor AMD drivers and hardware. Yet all the other times Nvidia is ahead it's normal. Yet when COD and Starfield runs better on AMD suddenly AMD managed to hobble Nvidia?

It's going to be interesting when Phantom Liberty runs like crap on AMD/Intel hardware!

@TNA I played over 20 hours - looking at all the complaining about bugs, I barely seen any.

Not even a single floating NPC! Even asked mates and it's surprisingly bug free for a Bethesda Games Studio game.

Mates RX6700XT runs it better than my RTX3060TI but it's still OK at lower settings so should be able to finish the game. Once Nvidia releases a newer driver it should help.

Strange the last one was quiet a while ago!

Did you read the first part?

"Starfield allocates its memory incorrectly where it doesn't align to the CPU page size. If your GPU drivers are not robust against this, your game is going to crash at random times."

Wait, wut? I thought AMD drivers sucked?

Out of interest, if the game has no strengths you can note, why are you still playing it?

I disagree about BG3 having great gameplay, it's point and click but funnily enough that is subjective, I can play games with poor gameplay if I find the writing engaging. I didn't say the writing should be excused either, nowhere in what you quoted does it say that. Bethesda games IMO have always had varied writing, some of best and most memorable stuff was side quests etc, with main line being fairly forgettable. This one wont be winning any awards for that either from what I've played so far, however I'm still enjoying the game. My enjoyment is not contingent on what others think and never will be thankfully.

I don't think any one thing has stood out for me so far on Starfield, however, when combined, it has resulted in a (so far) enjoyable experience. I've more than got my money's worth already considering a game rarely keeps me engaged these days. I think the only other game I'm remotely looking forward to is Space Marine 2, not a genre I really like but because I like the setting I'll be able to get some enjoyment out of it.
He must enjoy submissive gameplay torture
and getting worked up about clickbait reviews/youtubers as a kink or something?

I'd rather spend my time playing it and enjoying it vs finding every single moan online and frantically reposting it to people who don't care about shill journos and youtube clickbait helmets doing shock face thumbnails?

Imagine if he put all the time wasted in doing that into just playing the game, or better still one he actually likes non passive aggressively?

But that's just me.

i bloody wish i hadnt started the survey for the planet beginning with s in case i give something away, its driving me bananas  only one bubble to fill, but do you think i can find it, arrggg:cry:

The more I play, the more I wish they hadn't gone with the procedural generation/multiple systems and 1000 planets.

It sounds grand, but in practice actually hurts the game. Just seeing the same repetitive mines or abandoned labs on a slightly different coloured planet.pfft.

I still think this would have been so much better with just one very well crafted system and 8 or so planets.

Well my game is pretty much screwed after ~ 20hours. I'm on a replay of the shipyard with Sarah and I can't exit the level.
I have the next destination info and all the opposition are pushing up daisies, however when I return to the dock, there is no option to go back to the ship.
The waypoint seems to be point up in the air, even on the highest part of the base.... I assume as my ship is AWOL.
It also won't let me fast travel and I'm not encumbered.

Had previously had to delete a couple of hours of gameplay and go back to the start of this mission which was the last save that didn't drop me on launchpad without a ship, helmet or hair.... or place me in a cockpit with no hair or helmet where I'd jitter but not be able to do anything.
I thought this was the issue with too many manual saves so I cut down from 60 to ~ 15 total saves. (Gamepass)

I wonder now if the issue is that I did a lot of exploring first so leveled up and acquired a new ship which I registered and modified.
Might be that these early levels don't play nice with an alternate ship as the docking port in a different place. Everything has been fine until I went back to the Sarah quest line and then it just turned into a buggy mess.
Currently making Cyberpunk look stable.

Not sure I can face playing back through from the start right now, it's OK but not amazing, I have so so called decent weapons but a lot of the enemy are insane bullet sponges who can hit you with barely any line of sight yet you can barely hit them across a room. I can dump 2 clips into the head of an enemy half my rank at point blank range and they shrug it off. An enemy can be stood behind a waist high rail and you can't shoot them from 10m away as the game thinks they are in cover. You have to run around to a clear line of sight and soak up all the damage but they have no issue shooting you.

On one level I was getting absolutely hammed by a modified cutter / laser so I changed tactics to steal it first only to find it had very little ammo... so next to useless expect for stopping them using it. Yet the Enemy NPC's can fire it constantly.

I have little game time so put a few things on hold to make some progress so likely to take me around 2 weeks to get back to my current level.... which which time I'll have phantom liberty.

Half this thread is people moaning or finding all these weird bugs or issues. I expected to go into it with New Vegas level of bugs. So far I have hardly seen any bugs.

Literally everyone I know is finding the game fun, even on less than great hardware. Put over 30 hours into this game, and even on my new potato PC it works mostly OK with a bit of upscaling enabled.

I was thinking of playing Phantom Liberty which is coming out soon, but I think that is being shelved until I finished this game, and then finish Fallout:London.

i had an issue with after only around 10hrs, when i tried to load into the game it crashed at every save point listed, i had to start a new game, thankfully all seems fine this time, well so far

Like you, I've been lucky in having very few bugs with the game, my faults with the game lie in development decisions and gameplay mechanics rather than bugs. In terms of bugs, its the least buggy Bethesda game I've played.

Like you I don't even have the best PC for this game, and it seems far more playable than what I was reading on here. Maybe @keef247 was onto something!

I went into one of the planet survey missions too - I am down to the dregs of my ammo, got some afflictions and was selling everything I could loot to get essentials. Also had to do lots of walking, but bumped into some mercs which made things interesting.

I am going to finish the game properly before I make a comment. I was not so sure about Fallout 4,but I ended up enjoying that especially there was more to do than the main missions.

not forgetting as its been said, is has been optimized for pc according to Todd

Like all the new releases?

Made a small discovery, and sorry if it has already been mentioned: if you kill all the occupants of a ship, but have not yet sat in the seat, then it seems that you can offload all your gear into the hold of your home ship, no matter how far away it is - not the usual 200m limit. You need to be inside, obviously. I assume this is because the new vessel has been sort of added to the pool of your vehicles while you make up your mind. Leave without taking the new ship, and the stuff stays stashed safely.
