***The Official Starfield Thread*** (As endorsed by TNA)

I think engine wise, they have still managed to make it look good in places, but ultimately it looks like there are some things that they just cannot improve at this stage (like the janky animations/facial expressions). I mean Crysis had better animated and looking character models with better facial expressions and that came out in 2007.

I think a lot of the texture work in Starfield is actually really impressive considering how big it is and how little the vram footprint is. But there are parts of the game that just feel quite outdated compared to some of the latest titles.

It just doesn't look like they are ever going to be able to get rid of the sort of clunkiness of Oblivion etc with this engine.

The engine while old has been iterated on a lot. They have tools for and staff that know it inside out. It's more designed for object interactivity rather than high fps. Engines such as unreal are designed for high fps then graphics. It's easy to say they need to move onto a new engine and I don't disagree, however it's a lot of work and there a newer engine might not be suitable, tick all the boxes they need etc.

Starfields taken a bit of a back seat to ArmoredCore but I'm a chunk into the main story and have just started the Freestar chain.

Is there any other engine available where every single inventory item can be spawned and can interact in the world? Not as cool as it was, but it was incredible back in the Morrowind days. I also quite like many of the quirks of the engine, but in many ways it’s no where near as polished as many more recent games.

It’s weird because in some places it looks stunning and in others really average. Their filters and HDR implementation kill it in a lot of places currently.

Can someone just make a thread for ‘Starfield criticism’ and then we can just get back to talking about playing the game, tips etc. I don’t need to hear about cyberpunk, fallout 76 or star citizen.

We don't need separate threads for other games being criticised. It's pretty much just one user who has a very negative opinion about the game. It would be easier to just ignore him if you don't like his opinion of the game than to challenge him every time.

So it seems like most of us are in agreement that the story is not particularly good.

Seems like a game where you spend about 50% of the time talking to people should have a good story. So if it doesn't have a good story what is it good at?

What about the shooting? What is the general consensus on that? My opinion is that the shooting and guns themselves are pretty decent but it is completely let down by the enemy AI being very poor. And what good is having decent shooting if what you are shooting at are not far off static targets? Compare the AI to old games like FEAR or Half Life and it doesn't hold up.

Found a game breaking bug last night. I'll keep this as spoiler free as possible. If you pickpocket Benjamin Bayu and access his penthouse, prior to or during the latter part of the Ryujin espionage quests on Neon, you will be unable to use the elevator to exit the area. Thankfully I had a save file prior. Without that, it would have been game over.

FEAR had what seemed like the best AI of all time, but when the developers described it I believe it was all scripted, both of those games are linear which help. If you look at similar games like Cyberpunk it holds up pretty well. Not perfect, but in such a large game I doubt it will be in our lifetime.

Sure. And what he is doing is perfectly balanced and ok is it?

Go back and look at what I said. Was nothing malicious, some tongue and cheek maybe. That's it. Next minute apparently I am attacking him. What?? Lol

My post wasn't directed at you and made no reference to his claim of personal attacks so not sure why you're questioning me on it.

My favourite bug so far was when the UC leader lady in the vanguard quests at MAST just started to slowly disappear through the floor as I approached. Whenever the conversation switched to her, she was just slowly going through the environment, lower and lower. Then when the convo finished and I had to follow her , she literally just popped back up next to me. I lol'd.

I don't know much about Godot so it might be able to but I don't believe any other engine has the control over objects, triggers and player mods that Creation Engine can do. It's not an area I've read into a huge amount though.

If they managed to add performance capture into the npc's that would do so much for the immersion. After playing BG3 I don't want anything less now. It's amazing how the small natural movements we do make things real. :D

I never said your post was directed at me.

My question wasn't an interrogation mate. Just a simple question. Hope I did not offend you also

Yeah but why question me on something I've not mentioned

Far from offended, just confused. You're asking me directly to go back and read your posts as if I've challenged something you've said.

Lol, when I read that, all I could think of was, ark of the covenant gives powers, nazis want it , especially evil archaeologist who has special plans for it, hero protagonist with hat and whip to the rescue :D

I have also been enjoying BG3 but the basic plot premise is the same variation on the “special powers” theme. Wee beastie/item infers special powers and you are the chosen one to introduce a new age of understanding and or lead civilisation against the evil one(s) who crave power.

Fair enough. As I said was a simple question. I assumed you are following the thread hence your reply. Did not think it would take much effort engaging with my question. No biggie.

Yep, as someone mentioned there really are only a handful of stories throughout the millenia and we've basically been retelling the same stories with contextual variations for the last 2500 years
