*** The Official Steam Deck Thread ***

im really debating one of these as i love to game portable on my switch whilst commuting to work but i think this looks far too big to slug around on public transport but would be wicked playing all my PC games instead of just being limited to what Nintendo bring to there system. shame it looks like a big hefty game gear to me
do it. get one

This is also a handheld. 30fps looks vastly more acceptable on handheld screen than it does on my 55" plasma.

I am very sensitive to fps, even on a very small screen. Personally, I will only be playing older titles that have more chance of hitting a constant 60.
I could even notice enough of a difference to bother me between 25fps as was used on PAL analogue TV broadcasts vs 29.97fps as used with System-M (US with NTSC colour encoding). And this was on a CRT so would definitely have bothered me more on an LCD.

It’s only an 800p screen so you should be able to hit 60 in all but the most demanding sales with decent detail switched on. You’ll just take a hit on the battery life compared to capping it lower. That said I’d probably target 60 as well if the game will run at that.

Fixed that for you, the actual ETA is unknown as its after Q2 not within Q2 :)

Even the order that I put in 2 days after the launch is after Q2, e.g. sometime between June 2022 and infinity.

Thanx, thats no problem im in no hurry just bought a oled switch so need to make use of it until then lol

if they want to release worldwide currently its only in afew countries usa canada UK and parts of the eu they will have to get a move on with fulfilling orders
depends how bad supply constraints are for the steam deck.

I'll be looking forward to the proper reviews later this month

Really don't see the point in these, probably something PC gamers buy, play around with for a few days, once the novelty wares off it's shelved and then collects dust for years.

Pretty much what my Switch is doing right now. :D

As with anything, it's personal preference. Your Switch gathers dust, but millions of others are probably worn from daily use.

Exactly.

I don’t think my Steam Deck will get used daily, maybe not even weekly or monthly at times. I sometimes don’t do any gaming for weeks or even months but then can get hooked onto a game and put a lot of time into it.

But generally speaking when I do fancy gaming but can’t or don’t fancy doing it on my desktop it will really come in handy. There are many indie games which I would probably rather play on a Steam Deck then on my desktop. Plus being able to have old classics like Final Fantasy games and Resident Evil games on a portable device like that is just plain cool as far as I am concerned :D

With working from home, I'm less inclined to game on my desktop during the week so I'd love the freedom of being able to sit elsewhere and play some games.

Aside from playing games directly on the SD hardware, you can stream from your more powerful desktop hardware (including unsupported games), and emulate the full retro stack.

For me opposite, working from home Steam Deck will be unused, but once I start going to office again, I will be taking it with me.

And there me been thinking of buying one the new OLED switches

Does anyone know if you'll be able to play command and conquer on the Steam deck ? Ideally remastered version of command and conquer.

That is interesting actually. I wonder how games that need origin to run in the background will work on Steam Deck's proton launcher.
