The *Official* Supreme Commander Thread

the problem is that once found a few strat bombers or a nuke will be able to get through, unless your T3AA is forward enough of your position to take out the enemy before it gets to you. it doesnt take many to take out a sheild or a commander.

Just played a couple of games and used the support commanders, which normaly i wouldn't bother with. Those things are pretty cool when you give them resource allocation and have a bundle of tech 3 eng's there to help them upgrade.

Does anyone else get 5-10 minutes into tech 3 then get 'the fear'. I'm end up dumping my commander between 4 shield generators, plus a stealth gen nearby. The number of times i've been caught by gunship rushes that i can't beat back in time... Maybe i should play one of the 80x80 maps, at least then it'd take an age to find the commander, bet they make for V long games.

To be honest by the time you hit T3 your commander is best left assisting Engineers building Experimentals or Factory's to pump out T3 units (for that matter when you hit T2 he is best moved into a build support position), he can also help defend from a small amount of ground units so leaving him in your base is the best idea.
The only way you should leave him underwater is if you are about to loose and wanna hold the enemy off.
If you had a carrier, subs and a load of cruisers as protection then maybe that might be pretty safe place.

as i said before, there is no underwater superweapon. i am almost certain that a nuke cant hit anything underwater and artillery definatly cant which only really leaves naval forces and torp bombers to take out the commander. you can use your commander underwater to build torb launchers and Sam platforms as well as make naval units or even experimentals on the sea bed.

You can build SAM launchers under water?

The UEF exp sub could cause some fairly major grief if it headed toward your ACU, then again it's slow enough that you'd have plenty of time to run away.

Talking of which, does the commanders teleport upgrade take time to use? I tried to fire it off in a game earlier and he didn't budge. Not sure i see the point in it if it takes 30 seconds to trigger

No you can't build SAM's under water,
The teleport takes forever to build onto the commander, and if you want to actually use it, put the kettle on, it's nearly quicker getting him to walk there. I don't know if it takes longer to teleport longer distances though - if it was on say, a 40x40km map and took the same amount of time, it would be quite genius if you wanted to teleport him right into the middle of an opponent's base. Teleport & ctrl-K for the win :D

Ah right, so it's not worth the resources then, damm. On the whole it'd be easier to build a transport and a shedload of cover for it

I'm really enjoying SC. Got one thing that is really bugging me.

I like to create lots of little squads when attacking the enemy. I set each squad to swarm on a single target then add more targets to attack after.

However, anyone know how you can de-select a squad selection with a number? So that I can reuse the number?

Ta :D

You can just highlight the new squad then CTRL-1. Unless i'm missing something you don't need to de-select first.

Been playing SC for a few days. It's a good game, reminds me of Metal Fatigue (anyone ever played that?), maybe Metal Fatigue stole a few ideas from TA (don't know as I didn't play that)....anyway this is a 15 year old game concept. Can you imagine playing Space Invaders or Pong in like 1995? No.

If you keep buying this stuff they'll just keep making exactly the same stuff. As much as I have enjoyed playing it, it's still just Dune II with shiny graphics.

its TA but more advanced and with better graphics, higher unit cap too. Cant see how anyone can complain really. Dont fix something that isnt broken

So you'll be buying that inevitable Space Invaders remake then?

Gaming now has hit a trough like it did in the mid 90's when all that FMV and pre-rendered nonsense came along. Cyberia anyone? Well at least you can play this game, I suppose. This time round it's just same game - shinier graphics, but I am obviously wasting my time here so I will leave it :D

It is good fun to play, though.

What are peoples prefered factions? Any reasons why? Also anyone fancy a game online sometime? Could have a 2v2 or something.

I would but:

-I get 12fps on 1024x768 low with this Geforce 6100

-This internet connection has rubbish ping

Which tells me your overall knowledge of gaming is lacking somewhat... if you think Sup Com is anything like Dune II. In fact as someone who considered Dune II one of the most memorable games he's ever played I have to say it's nothing like, besides of course they both have controllable units and are classed as an "RTS". :)

I'm not sure how on Earth you think developers are going to just magic up brand new gaming concepts up form thin air just as though they were lying around all over the place waiting to be picked up. Want to know why they release RTS games so consistently? because gamers love them... I love them... they are successful as a genre and I find Sup Com genuinely different to what's out there now (I never played TA). The same principle goes for FPS shoorers etc... they share similar grounds but people love them and they are staple concepts that we as gamers want to see repeated!

i honesly dont see how anyone can say this is just another RTS. C&C 3 is just another RTS. nothign new there at all. SupCom though has massive maps, an incredible zoom feature, enormous tactical and strategic options.

the one thing that is very hard to do is just make a swarm of units to win the game. a lot of the time co-ordinated attacks from land sea and air are all needed to beat an enemy down. no other RTS for me has come close.
