The *Official* Supreme Commander Thread

If not Dune II, then Warcraft.

Want to know why they release RTS games so consistently? because gamers love them... I love them... they are successful as a genre and I find Sup Com genuinely different to what's out there now (I never played TA). The same principle goes for FPS shoorers etc... they share similar grounds but people love them and they are staple concepts that we as gamers want to see repeated!

It's just chop down wood....sorry, mass, and mine gold....um, energy? Build some barracks, and some peons oooh wait, balance it out with some farms, bla bla bla. Please don't tell me you can't see through that?

I'd understand if all the people that loved it had never played an RTS before, but why do people come back for more? Do you watch a lot of remakes in the cinema too?

so
because we've had Doom/Wolfenstine 3D we shouldn't have bought Quake
or Doom 2
or Quake 2
or Unreal
or Quake 3/UT
or Quake 4/UT 2xxx
or Doom 3
or Farcry
or CS
or DOD
or CS:S
or TFC
or................................................. you get the picture.

well put Vent. where exactly is the room for new stuff in a FPS game or a RTS game? they are in that genre because of what they are. all FPS games are essentialy a guy with a gun and maybe some other guns. should we all only eer play the first incarnation of any genre and never play new ones? my computer would be bored stiff if i only had price of persia, sim city, worms, cannon fodder, titus fox and premier manager on it.

i honesly dont see how anyone can say this is just another RTS. C&C 3 is just another RTS. nothign new there at all. SupCom though has massive maps, an incredible zoom feature, enormous tactical and strategic options.

the one thing that is very hard to do is just make a swarm of units to win the game. a lot of the time co-ordinated attacks from land sea and air are all needed to beat an enemy down. no other RTS for me has come close.

Well I highly doubt this would work against human players, but to be pedantic, a "swarm" of experimentals is still a swarm, a swarm of nukes is still a swarm....you can still win by spamming. In a game earlier I was bored so I built 3 launchers and assisted them with 15 or so ACUs and just hammered the enemy with nukes until they ran out of defensive missiles. You can still win this game by being an unimaginitive moron just like you could build a mass of footmen in Warcraft and scroll over to the enemy base and click.

OK, there are a few new (and good) features but you lot are essentially drooling over a 65 year old woman who you've already slept with for your entire adult life just because she's got some new frilly underwear on.

Can you please give me an example of game that CAN'T be exploited? And have you tried your strategies online against a good player? I assure you if you tried that your arse would be handed to you on a plate. But then as you said, you already know that. :)

No, I haven't played a game online for years (except with friends) because, you guessed it, I am a cynical b****** and I had enough of sniper kiddies and rushers in about 2002!

What about people who don't have internet connections (or me)? Don't they deserve a challenge too?

most of the rushers in SupCom are in the ladder. they rush because they want to win, its simple. if you want to actualy play a game then just play other people in the multiplayer, ask if they like to play longer games or whtever and go from there.

there is a massive thread on the official frums aobut rushing etc and its very simply the difference between 2 sets of people. some people play to win, and others play to enjoy themselves. in many many cases rushing is the most effective way of winning.

as for the tactics, very few human players i think would let you get away with making a swarm of nuke silos without some kind of defence. yes a swarm of experimentals is still a swarm, but a) it takes a considerable amount of time to make a swarm of experimentals b) any and all players should constantly be scouting the enemy to see what they are upto and c) if you let someone build 20 experimentals to send at your base you either need your head tested or are a brilliant turtle.

i can only assume you only ever play a game if its the first in its genre.

<--- Yeah, that would be me.

You're right, that game ended at 2 hours, but I hadn't built a single mass fab or power gen since an hour in. I could have ended it then. An hour is long for an online game though....but I don't want to play for 20 minutes anyway.

Sure, online I'd have to get my **** together but I already know that lurking behind 90% of those usernames there will be immature children who quit 5 minutes in, exploit, get in arguments over minor game settings and then quit, etc.

There's a ton of players in this forum who play for the fun of it... play with them. :)

Not true, but I certainly won't be playing minor rehashes of that game in 15 years time.....well, unless someone gives them to me and I am very, very bored.

supcoms hardly the game of choice for immature children, im sorry but its somewhat naive to think that. Supcoms too tactics for the hyper-active immature child to be honest, a lot of patience involved etc.

And really, you say you play to enjoy it, playing online is often one of the most enjoyable aspects to a game, you're really missing a lot by avoiding playing online, to be honest theres not too many games where the online experience spoils the game instead of adding to it. Best thing to do, play a few times, make some friends around the same skill level and just play together, against each other etc. Means its always even, you can make it last as long as you want etc.. :)

Just had an awsome skirmish :) I played the 5-player 10x10 skirmish map with one large island and lots of neutrals in the middle. It was me and 4 supreme AIs without any teams.

I love this game :D I had my army built up (8 of the Cybran Flying T4s, a few Monkeylords and about 150 total T3 bots and Seige guns.) Just sent them all into the middle of an enemy base and sat back to watch the carnage :D

Does anyone else do that? When there's a massive battle, but you're pretty sure you'll win, just give everyone their orders at the start and then watch the mayhem unfold? You can get some great views with the rotate feature, its fantastic :D (Except one sad moment when a Galactic Colussus took out two of my Monkeylords and hardly took a hit! It was so sad!)

Still, excellent game. I was still playing TA when this came out, and if the modders come up with decent stuff then this may well last that long too :)

GFX707, there are plenty of people out there looking to just enjoy a game mate, i am one of them. i dont think supcom is a game for an average kid because of the complexity on offer and the scale. thats not degrade kids but few i tihnk have the patients to ge to grips with SupCom when they can play CS or C&C quickly. i am still yet to play actual multiplayer but its coming soon no doubt, i just dont have any mates that will play online so i'm left to people i dont know.

People online are fine, i play ranked games a lot, yeah you get the odd rusher but learn from it, learn how to build up a small army as you tech up. From what i seen there is no greif or what ever you get the odd person at the start saying "Hi, good luck, have fun". Its all pretty freindly really.

I just realised that the UEF experimental artillery does in fact have a range, lol. :o
Yeh a minimum range :p

<3 the Mavor, suits the way I play, so if I have time to get it into play its more important than a Nuke :D

I'm all for the long game as well. However, when I used to play in the TA Tourneys on Wireplay then S.A.M rushes were my thing but nowadays I like to try and build up a bit and enjoy the ensuing onslaught (usually me getting slaughtered lol)
