*** The Official Tribes: Ascend Thread! ***

Titan launcher is better. That and the chain cannon with mines + super heavy makes a really good load out for Hof. Only thing is you need roaming defense to stop them disrupting you.

Normally we use soldier instead of heavy as our gens are normally kept down.

Yes we run 3 defence.

1x soldier stand D running super heavy with proxy nades, thumper and AR.
1x soldier roaming D basically trying to keep the enemy offence from disrupting the stand D player.
1x Sniper.

Some teams run a Doom but we prefer the double soldier set up. Dont get me wrong some of the top teams use a doom but some dont.

Those two matches I spectated on were good. The first one on Arx Novena you won comfortably 7-1. Seeing all the team apart from T1LuiGi, who was capping of course, with between 19-30 kills. Wow I am lucky to get 20 kills if I camp the generator or go HOF in a PUG. :D
Second match on Kabatabatic, was a real humdinger, you were 4-1 down I believe at one point. Then things started working for you and some real nice play. Bits that stood out to me were the double pass of the flag right near your base for a cap, a reverse move I have never seen, with someone grabbing the flag at speed and mid air passing to the other capper going in the opposite direction. Sweet. Also that pick up of the enemy flag out on the right looking from your base, to bring back for another cap.
You were at 4-3 I think with seconds to go when you got the equaliser to bring it to overtime. Man I felt like Dale Arden in Flash Gordon cheering you all on. :D
When you got the winner, it was brilliant. Wow.
Needless to say really well played team, great.

How did the other matches go? Would love to watch more, might try and record a bit for the crack.

jmc, glad you enjoyed.. that Katabatic game was pretty tense.

we have a website (http://shazbot.co.uk) where you can see our results.

We have another brilliant game soon to be uploaded too, it was a casted match and should appear on the cogsandink youtube channel any day now, I'll be sure to post the video in here.

Also here is a nice Juggernaut video, some nice plays and shots in this one. :o

Glad you enjoyed it. Kiwi was a nub at level 12 not so long ago but now playing against the best teams in Europe. If you get Mic then one of us can build you up in the role you wanna play as long as its not sniper. Capping is probably not ideal for newer players either.

Cheers. Yeah after watching the runs you guys were doing then trying myself, I can't even get a simple run down to pat. Sniping, I can't hit a barn door, though I liked to think of myself as a pretty hot sniper in FPS's, namely USF, BC2, BF3. :)
The role I was thinking I could fit into pretty well was disruptor.

Tribes Game is Down, downer must go up with the missus. :)

I'll stop sucking you guys plums, though have to say I felt like God watching over you guys in the matches I saw, :D following the flag catcher willing the enemy to miss flag recaptures e.t.c. and was giddy with joy with that Katabatic win. I felt involved man. :D

Level 25 and I'm still a nub haha.

If I could reinvest my time I would have started with Raider and Soldier. They have two very different styles of duelling however to my mind it all comes down to knowing your enemy which is just is a matter of experience.

One tip that helped me is for the love of god try not to jump that high as solider in duels. The best soldiers dont need to jump to use the thumper. When another soldier jumps, chain I'm down and then thump him. From a Raider perspective you should always be grounded using the shield as much as possible until the enemy jumps, which is when you should also correspondingly jump, only as much as required to get the chain (it's much easier when they jump) and miss the splash damage of the thumper.

If you want a lesson in how this should be done just spec Jim.

Kiwi ur not a nub anymore lol. We all still have room for improvement but getting there I think.

Jmc as kiwi said jimaroo is very decent at that position but kiwi can teach you a lot also. Disrupting is a good role to start out with which can let you move between roaming d as well if required.

Jim's head most be getting massive with all this praise. U suck Jim.

Oi, what is wrong with being a sniper? :p

You and the other guys in the flamboyant channel have heped me a lot as sniper. OK you cant teach me to shoot but you guys have taught me a lot about flag routes and positioning and how generally the game works

OK, so I am gonna write as one noob to another now......:p

Sniping is hard, and the one thing I am learning is that FPS is extremely important. I have done some googling and tweaked my tribes.ini for more FPS and without a doubt it has improved my ability to hit - even though it is still nowhere near what it really should be. I have gone from 20-30fps up to 30-40fps (sometimes 50) and even that has made things smoother. I also reduced my resolution last night as well, which actually helped believe it or not! I am also starting to 'feel' my shots more as well. I guess it just comes down to the learning curve and whilst I am still way off players like Sneakybear, I am improving all the time.

I almost gave up sniper a few days ago, but after being inspired by Sneaky and Tailspin, i have made a few changes and seen a little more success. But thats why I am really enjoying tribes at the moment. It rewards effort, and it rewards patience and practice. I couldnt hit a barn door at first, but now each time I play I am hitting a little more and killing a little more. I am never really in a server where I get raped either so although the learning curve is quite steep it is also strangely gradual due to the balancing system. I cant wait till I get a rig that gives me higher FPS as I really think I will settle into the sniper then. That said, I am seeing mid scoreboard positions on some games already, and on a good match can achieve getting on for 15,000 points. OK, I know thats not going to win any awards, but as a player who exclusively uses the sniper class on pubs with only around 40 hrs experience I think thats ok. I can also get around 10 assists each game too, which are the kills i need to capitalise on.

I had an inf call me an easy n00b last week after I called him a pussy for invisible melee killing me, and I felt like punching the little scrote in the face. But isnt hindsight wonderful? He was absolutely right, and whilst I am still a n00b I am a little less easy than I was last week thanks to the lessons I learn each game from people like him, as well as the flamboyant guys. I am sure it will be the same for you.

Also experiement with load out. I changed mine last night and felt more in control, and was more successful. I only played briefly so didnt get a chance to fully get into it, but I think I may well keep it. There is something strange about using the BXT1 rifle that steadies my aim. I think it is the charging system, and it just slows me down so I take more time to line up shots. Also I can do a little bit of chasing now and I am also experimenting with strafing/jetpacking in the same direction as laterally moving players in order to slow the overall speed difference between my position and theirs, allowing for easier hits. Watching vids by Sneakybear and Tailspin have been really useful and also other tutorial vids on youtube. I am also just starting to chase/move whilst scoped and have had some good hits.

So if you really do fancy yourself as a sniper, and thats what you love to do then stick with it - its hard and it will likely make you cry like a baby - but I am sure you will find it rewarding if you are prepared to stick with it

The improved FPS and loadout has made melee fighting easier too, and although the use of close combat has not completely stopped 1 hit inf melee kills, there were plenty that didnt get the kill and I went on to deal a lot of damage with my falcon and in some cases kill them. Once I have a decent FPS and have practiced more with the falcon I am pretty sure I will capitalise on the kills as soooooo often the inf was left with only a tiny amount of health but I just didnt quite have enough accuracy to make it no health (times like that make me cry! Arrrrgh Muthaaaaafuuuu - you can guess the rest :p )

Using the BXT1 rifle has certainly helped with melee fighting as well. I know that is not my primary role, but if I get someone trying to kill me, it is good practice to fight back and because the BTX1 does not nerf my energy I can move and actually put up a reasonable fight. I have read it is best to suicide in comp games to minimise downtime, so you can get back to your spotting position for the base def, but it pubs it is not really necessary and removes a good opportunity for melee practice :)

I still have a long way to go but hopefully by next year I will be good enough to join a team. I think I could achieve it sooner but I can only play a few hours of an evening at the moment, and some weekends.

Anyways, I will add you to my friends list in game and probably see you on the servers. :)

Cheers

Do people generally go with AR/thumper or Spinfusor/Eagle pistol with Soldier?

I've just started messing around with the latter combo, liking it a lot. Eagle pistol is surprisingly good, with it being a hitscan weapon.

Cheers Buff. Some good info me feels the last few posts.

Anytime - but it's only stuff I have learned from the guys on here. I wish I had a group of people like we have here to advise me and offer support when I was starting out in Q3. Who knows how differently things may have turned out! I coulda been pro man, I coulda been pro! :p

I do feel that Tribes misses out on creating a community feel as players never know what server they are connecting to unless its a custom. So you are constantly playing against different people and never really developing server relationships with people you play regularly. It reminds me a lot of Quake Live in that respect. Its just so big and there are so many servers it dilutes the community feel. Tribes feels a little impersonal to me when in servers with people I dont know, and because I know I probably wont play any of these guys again I dont really feel any motivation to chat to them. Does anyone else feel that way?

I was browsing earlier and decided to look up the rig I used for Q3 back when I started. It was an AMD K6-2 (686) PC from Time Computers that had an intergrated graphics card on the motherboard and around 64MB of RAM and gave me maximum of 15 FPS. It cost around £1600!! I couldnt find it though :(

Leonard Nimoy was part of an advertising campaign for Time Computers that when watched now proves to be eerily prophetic.

By the way jmc007, if you havent already, try and get into higher ranked servers ASAP. You might get raped to start with but it will make you a better player if you stick with it! :)

Cheers
