Glad you enjoyed it. Kiwi was a nub at level 12 not so long ago but now playing against the best teams in Europe. If you get Mic then one of us can build you up in the role you wanna play as long as its not sniper. Capping is probably not ideal for newer players either.
Oi, what is wrong with being a sniper?
You and the other guys in the flamboyant channel have heped me a lot as sniper. OK you cant teach me to shoot but you guys have taught me a lot about flag routes and positioning and how generally the game works
Cheers. Yeah after watching the runs you guys were doing then trying myself, I can't even get a simple run down to pat.
Sniping, I can't hit a barn door, though I liked to think of myself as a pretty hot sniper in FPS's, namely USF, BC2, BF3.
The role I was thinking I could fit into pretty well was disruptor.
OK, so I am gonna write as one noob to another now......
Sniping is hard, and the one thing I am learning is that FPS is extremely important. I have done some googling and tweaked my tribes.ini for more FPS and without a doubt it has improved my ability to hit - even though it is still nowhere near what it really should be. I have gone from 20-30fps up to 30-40fps (sometimes 50) and even that has made things smoother. I also reduced my resolution last night as well, which actually helped believe it or not! I am also starting to 'feel' my shots more as well. I guess it just comes down to the learning curve and whilst I am still way off players like Sneakybear, I am improving all the time.
I almost gave up sniper a few days ago, but after being inspired by Sneaky and Tailspin, i have made a few changes and seen a little more success. But thats why I am really enjoying tribes at the moment. It rewards effort, and it rewards patience and practice. I couldnt hit a barn door at first, but now each time I play I am hitting a little more and killing a little more. I am never really in a server where I get raped either so although the learning curve is quite steep it is also strangely gradual due to the balancing system. I cant wait till I get a rig that gives me higher FPS as I really think I will settle into the sniper then. That said, I am seeing mid scoreboard positions on some games already, and on a good match can achieve getting on for 15,000 points. OK, I know thats not going to win any awards, but as a player who exclusively uses the sniper class on pubs with only around 40 hrs experience I think thats ok. I can also get around 10 assists each game too, which are the kills i need to capitalise on.
I had an inf call me an easy n00b last week after I called him a pussy for invisible melee killing me, and I felt like punching the little scrote in the face. But isnt hindsight wonderful? He was absolutely right, and whilst I am still a n00b I am a little less easy than I was last week thanks to the lessons I learn each game from people like him, as well as the flamboyant guys. I am sure it will be the same for you.
Also experiement with load out. I changed mine last night and felt more in control, and was more successful. I only played briefly so didnt get a chance to fully get into it, but I think I may well keep it. There is something strange about using the BXT1 rifle that steadies my aim. I think it is the charging system, and it just slows me down so I take more time to line up shots. Also I can do a little bit of chasing now and I am also experimenting with strafing/jetpacking in the same direction as laterally moving players in order to slow the overall speed difference between my position and theirs, allowing for easier hits. Watching vids by Sneakybear and Tailspin have been really useful and also other tutorial vids on youtube. I am also just starting to chase/move whilst scoped and have had some good hits.
So if you really do fancy yourself as a sniper, and thats what you love to do then stick with it - its hard and it will likely make you cry like a baby - but I am sure you will find it rewarding if you are prepared to stick with it
The improved FPS and loadout has made melee fighting easier too, and although the use of close combat has not completely stopped 1 hit inf melee kills, there were plenty that didnt get the kill and I went on to deal a lot of damage with my falcon and in some cases kill them. Once I have a decent FPS and have practiced more with the falcon I am pretty sure I will capitalise on the kills as soooooo often the inf was left with only a tiny amount of health but I just didnt quite have enough accuracy to make it no health (times like that make me cry! Arrrrgh Muthaaaaafuuuu - you can guess the rest
)
Using the BXT1 rifle has certainly helped with melee fighting as well. I know that is not my primary role, but if I get someone trying to kill me, it is good practice to fight back and because the BTX1 does not nerf my energy I can move and actually put up a reasonable fight. I have read it is best to suicide in comp games to minimise downtime, so you can get back to your spotting position for the base def, but it pubs it is not really necessary and removes a good opportunity for melee practice
I still have a long way to go but hopefully by next year I will be good enough to join a team. I think I could achieve it sooner but I can only play a few hours of an evening at the moment, and some weekends.
Anyways, I will add you to my friends list in game and probably see you on the servers.
Cheers
