***The Official Wolfdale 8200/8400/8500 Overclocking Thread ***

I thought I would push my E8400 a little more and took it to 4.2Ghz. It booted into Vista with 1.38v on the cpu, +0.1 MCH & +0.1 FSB Termination.

Temps were a little high and the vdroop was pretty massive according to CPUZ. It did fall over after 2mins of Small FFTs. I do also have 4x1Gb Sticks of XMS that might be holding me back a little.

However, I have got it stable at 4Ghz with 1.31v and MCH/FSB Voltages set at normal. I noticed the vdroop was far less with 1.3v in the bios and 1.264 in CPUZ. Temps not above 60c with Orthos. I did give it 4hrs of Orthos small FFTs but got bored and played FSX for nearly 5hrs and a further 2hrs of Crysis so I think its pretty stable to me. :)

Very happy with it and wont be pushing anymore until I either mod the board of its vdroop (need a multimeter really for that) or I change the board and cooler which will be happening before xmas anyway.

I had to up the voltage to 1.32v to get it stable at 4.05Ghz. Cpuz reports 1.296v idle and 1.28 under load. Vdroop?

I left the machine running small ftt's for 4 hours last night while I went out and Realtemp reported max temps of 61c.

Is that ok?

Thats exactly the same as my E8400 including the Vdroop:)
Temps would be in the high 50 do

Running orthos on above chip now for 1hr 30mins, good enough for me!

This is using xspc wc. Max temp is 64 load 32 idle.

Booted into vista fine at 4.7 but refused to prime stable - (same volts @ 4.5). Will have a go tonight but temps may get too high for my liking!

These E0 revisions are ***!

4ghz

4.24ghz

Would like to try a bit higher but this motherboard only has voltage increments of .05v and it's set to 1.42 at the minute.

Final results!

Pretty sure 4.6 is the limit.

Cant get it stable at 4.7 or 4.65 - even pushing 1.475 (bios, 1.4 CPUZ) through it. Not gonna go any higher as it was getting toasty at 70C. At 4.6 temps didnt move much above 66. Possible that the mobo (FSB) is holding it back.

Overall though I think this chip is a monster - if you can get your hands on a E0 e8400 then do it! I got mine through overclockers and can say a +50% overclock was better than anything I had in mind!

Great chip and had a whole lotta fun pushing it to its limits!

So final specs:

GigaByte GA-EP35E
Beta Bios
e8400 @ 4608 (512*9) 1.45V in Bios; 1.38 Bios Health Check ( 1.344CPUZ)
8GB OCZ 1066 @ 2.1V
FSB 0.2 OV
NB O.1 OV
XSPC customized cooling.

Temps:

Idle: 33C-35C (22C Ambient)
Max at Load: 67C

Cooling is a big chunk of TRUE with a single Akasa amber, this is in an Antec 300 case (which i hate:() so the rear and the celing fan are pretty much on the TRUE

Idle atm 18/26 this is the highest I think I've seen it on idle, coretemp and Everest give the same readings.

Currently sitting 500*8 @ 1.34v

Are the e8400s known to have duff temp sensors?
