*** The Official X1950 Pro Thread ***

that shoud be fine. at idle my 1950 pro system in sig uses 150watts roughly. soo when in game i reckon it would be around the 350 mark. unfortuantly i cant check as if i tab to desktop to look at the program that tells me im no longer in game lol

This HIS fan rattling is worrying me atm

I was gonna go for the 512mb HIS card (AGP) cos I wouldn' then have to fork out £30 on a Thermalright HR-03 and install it on the Sapphire 512mb to:

1) make the Sapphire card stfu hehe
&
2) clock the Sapphire up to HIS out-the box speeds

3) The HIS card exhausts hot air outside the case via DHES

However if the HIS is just gonna rattle away and annoy me then I don't wanna spend £220 total on a new card by adding a heatsink to the inadequate one on the HIS!

my HIS's are silent apart from when the fan speeds up when under heavy load but to be honest my Arctic cooler makes more noise than both of these

Guess you'll never know then ;) I will! cos I got one  and whatever it will be, it won't be as loud as the sapphire :D in fact I've still got my earplugs in now :p

Some people say HIS Iceq3 are quiet, others say Powercolor AC is quiet. As for me i'm waiting for the Sapphire Pro Ultimate (18-23db) to become available before purchasing.

Quiteness is a relative term, if you have a noisy computer you won't hear a 40db+ (HIS ICEQ3 & AC Powercolor) gfx card.

The important thing to bear in mind is that most living rooms are around 20db, with every 3db increase a doubling in sound level, a 'silent' HIS & Powercolor is therefore far from silent.

I already have an arctic cooler on my 6800, I consider that to be very quiet as all I can hear from my system is air moving (large fans) and my hardrive resonating.

If the HIS cooling solution is the same as the arctic cooler then I consider that quiet:) I don't however want to get it only to find it rattles!!!

Basically my dilemma was sapphire or HIS, with sapphire I can buy the card and one of the best GPU coolers, the HR-03 for £182.

OR the HIS on its own for £187

cheers

3t3p

if you mean your thinking of buying the card and then adding another cooler, then this will invalidate your warranty, I would get one like the HIS with a quiet cooler already attached, neither of my 2 HIS's rattle....

Just for reference, my sapphire 512mb AGP model is the most quiet video card i have ever seen, both under load and idle. It's so quiet its barely audible :)

Mine too, I thought something was wrong it was so quiet! nowhere near as noisy as my old HIS X850 pro.

might aswell get a single 8800 for the price.
Yeah, I think one is enough and will tide you over nicely until spring when there should be a lot more choices and most likely a price drop on current 'high-end' models . . .

The aim of the game is to get as much performance as possible for your money!

What games and what res are u intending to play tom?

Well the monitor im getting with my new system goes up to 1680x1050. Just getting it so when i do eventually get a very powerful card, maybe a G80 refresh or newer model or something, ill have a good monitor to play it on.

For now games i want to play are Battlefield 2, Counter Strike source, Company of heroes, Medieval 2, Eve online and FEAR combat (fear multiplayer). For these games a single Pro should be fine i would have thought.

Yup, a good monitor is worth splashing out on, they seem to hold their value better than high end GPUs. I've had a DELL 24" (1920x1200) for 20 months now, lol that was fed by a 9800Pro for a while, then a X850XT. Only game I have played at 1920x1200 was guild wars which ran fine (even on a 9800pro) all the other games were run at a lower res but 'upscaled' to fill the big screen, not ideal but I can say I totally enjoyed playing Far-Cry this was (with a 9800pro).

those games should be fine running at the res you want, however the two highlighted are real system killers so not so sure there (have a flick through the reviews though). What's the rest of your system like btw? (A64 - A64x2 - Core2 Duo?)

Will be a E6300, going to be overclocking hopefully to around 2.8ghz or more, 2gb 6400 ram aswell. I think the x1950pro should be ok for the games for now untill i get more money for a better card.

Anyway cheers big wayne for the suggestions so far.

B.W - are you likely to have had the 2nd HIS card tested by thursday to see if that rattles too?

as i want to know which one to buy the HIS or the Sapphire lol.

i'll be buying one now and probably Crossfire another one when they come down to silly low prices just so i dont have to splash out on a brand new card.
