***The Official Yorkfield Q9300/Q9450/Q9550 Overclocking Thread ***

Can someone post the median overclock speeds for these processors ?

I'm mobile at the moment and can't get through this thread in it's entirity.

ie
Q9300 3.2ghz
Q9450 3.5ghz
etc

Which do you reckon is the best bang per buck?

what idle temps are normal for these chips then? as like i said my readings are 37-40c. :/

i was planning to OC but if the temps shift too much then i wont bother. :(

Sounds a bit high for stock speeds. These chips do run a lot cooler than the Q6600's.

Check your fan speed as it may be running low, or maybe re-seat your cooler with less paste.

The Q9300 is a pointless chip. Less cache than the Q6600, and its multiplier cripples its overclocking.

The sensible choice is between a Q6600 and a Q9450, and tbh it's pretty hard to recommend the Q9450 over the Q6600 at current prices.

Thanks Cob,

But what about the performance gain (clock by clock) of the yorkfields over the old architecture ? Or is that just a myth ?

Maybe the Q9450 needs another £50 off to start approaching the sweet spot.

The Q9450 is about 10% faster than the Q6600 clock-for-clock. Tho it does widen that gap in software that takes advantage of SSE4.1. So things like video editing/converting will see a bigger gain if the software can take advantage of it.

do any of the H264.exe encoders take advantage of SSE4.1 ?

I'm at 3.6 gig on my Quad - but at high volts -1.5Vcore actual - BUT although v. hot (77C under small prime) - under everyitng else it doesn't go above 70-71, and its totally stable

so is 140 quid worth lower temps, and about 90W less power usage

probably not :(

hi there...

I have my Q9450 @ 3.2(8x400)...i've ran prime95 countless times for 8 hours or more without any errors or crashes. But i seem to get a BSOD now and then. When i booted up the next day i got a BSOD on boot up then i got one while browsing the net.

I'm running a Asus Maximus Formula with 1201 BIOS with 4 x 1gigs of ddr2 400 (4-4-4-12)

Theres are the actual volts under windows...

Vcore = 1.22v
FSB = 1.25v
CPU PLL = 1.6v
North Bridge = 1.44v
South Bridge = 1.07v
DRAM = 2.0v

Could "DRAM Static Read Control" in the BIOS be casuing the BSOD?? I noticed most people have this disabled, but i have no idea what it is, so i have it on auto all the time.

I've also ran memtest for over 2 hours without errors.

Any help is much appreciated.

Does it need that much PLL for that overclock, seems a lot to me.

It's actually set to 1.5 in the BIOS which is the lowest it can go. ASUS boards overvolt which is annoying, but i can't set it any lower. I think it was around 1.6 actual, but that was read from the BIOS, not sure what it is in windows.

Just noticed mine has jumped to 1.1625 on my Q9450,just noticed this in the changelog:

Fix: Incorrect VID detection on 45nm desktop Intel parts.

Q9300

Hi guys
First post - so be gentle!
The poor old Q9300 seems to be getting the cinderella vote, but I have got one in my maximus formula running at 3.525 Ghz rock solid.

At idle:
CPU Core : 1.29v
NB Core : 1.55v
SB Core : 1.09v
DIMM : 2.21v
Temps (realtemp) : 34,32,33,33.

At load:
CPU Core : 1.26
NB Core : 1.55
SB Core : 1.09
DIMM : 2.19 to 2.21
Temps (realtemp) : 58,53,52,50

I'm running vista ultimate 64 bit with 4Gb of corsair CM2 1024 8500C5D Dominators.
Bus is at 470Mhz with memory on 1:1 with 7.5 multi on CPU.

Seems better in all respects to the Q6600 I had in this same board which I could never get over 3.2Ghz - prob a bad chip.

470 seems to be the wall at the moment with the 9300 as I can't get it stable
above this. Still, I'm pretty pleased with the current o/c and happy with the way it handles games etc.

Wish I could get my P5E to be stable at 470 FSB, mine isn't really stable much above 465, still got a really good watercooling setup going on as soon as my other Mosfet block turns up, then see if a few more volts will do the trick, not banking on it though.
