***The Official Yorkfield Q9300/Q9450/Q9550 Overclocking Thread ***

Just been reading about VTT/CPU PLL on AnandTech http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=428.

How much truth is there in the "do not go over 1.4V" statement? as the lowest setting on my mobo for CPU PLL is 1.5v:confused::eek:

Also what is considered to be safe vCore and Load temps for 24/7 use on a Q9550?

Currently stable @ 3.91GHz, 1.35vCore
can Windows @ 4GHz, but not stable

Idle temps 38-41
Load temps 55-57

my new q9550 sits at 3.8ghz with 1.29vcore E0 stepping could probably go higher with more volts but like temps nice and low

LabR@t - I'm not 'trying to rain on your parade', however if my understanding of the various threads I have read about temp. readings via Real temp is correct then you need to add 5c to each of the temps shown in your pic e.g.59 for core 0 should read 64.

It's the Tjmax that is set by Real Temp @95 when it should be set @100 - if wished you can alter the Tjmax in the settings.

In either event your temps do not look too bad - other threads have talked about 70c+ being a point to avoid.

If I'm misunderstanding matters can someone please correct me !!

whats your chips vid ?

vid is 1.1

oh i have read different reports on tjmax for quad 45nm some say 95c some say 100c . either way thats torture test temps so I am good to go as normal usage will not stress it like that for long if ever?

VTT isn't CPU PLL.

CPU PLL starts at 1.5v and I wouldn't go over 1.7v for 24/7 plus it doesn't make a huge different to normal overclocks on ai/water anyway.

1.4v VTT is suggested as the max, although some people have been fine for relatively long periods of time with higher. Depends on how long you're plannin gon keeping the CPU.

3.9's a good overclock, wouldn't be too fussed for more on a 24/7 rig. Volts and temps are good.

Nice & low - mines a CO stepping with vid of 1.2375.

Must have read same reports I did when it comes to Tjmax - Still odd though that RealTemp reads 5c less than all other testing progs e.g Core Temp,Speedfan & that lavalys (soz can't remember correct name and am writing this at work so cannot check !) one . I assumed myself that 'majority' were correct- which may not be the right assumption , of course.

Would agree that in 'normal' usage that it's unlikely that you'll get to and stay at top temps BUT what if .........???

Unless your running cpu stressing programs would probably not give it a second thought myself :D

First attempt. Only on a Scythe Mini Ninja at the moment, although I will swap it for a TRUE soon. Recommended next step, RAM timings (5-5-5-18 at the moment @ T2), up FSB? I want to keep it below 60 ideally under full load, capped at 56 at the moment on hottest core.

I'v e got same cpu same stepping I am on an abit ip35-e Mainboard

fsb 447 * 8.5 = 3.8ghz
4gb geil 6500 @ 1:1 5-5-5-15 2.3v
vcore is 1.41 in bios and 1.2 in windows
all other bios settings as auto

I ran prime95 for 5 hours this afternoon whilst at work temps when i came home 53-53-51-49

give those settings ago ?

try that

What cooler is that running on?

Edit - Tried applying the .5 multiplier (8.0 --> 8.5) and windows won't load. 3.2 is enough for me anyway I guess, its running 1:1 with the RAM so it's all good.

artic cooler which is now starting to annoy me was whisper quiet with my old 2180@3ghz but spins up a fair bit now.

any suggestions for quiet good replacment is the TRUE the best air cooler?

Got myself a Q9550. Still using my good old Asus P5K-E (P35) and a kit of basic 2x2GB 1000MHz G.skill. I can run 442*8,5=3757MHz with everything at lowest possible voltage (ie. CPU at 1.225V, PLL 1.5V, NB at 1.25V etc.) with no problems whatsoever; 12 hours of Prime now, multiple runs of IntelBurnTest, hours and hours of gaming. Now if I try to get above 446FSB, the computer locks up almost immediately no matter what settings and voltage I use. Is this the dreaded FSB wall? Could I possibly bypass it by changing motherboard? Thinking of P5Q Pro. Any other reasonably priced MBs out there with good overclocking potential?

The chip has so much promise, running so well with stock voltage. I know it runs well enough for anything I throw at it but I want more, I want 4GHz! ;) Oh and it's a used CPU, the previous owner has gotten it to 4GHz on air with 1.3V vcore or so.

I'd say it probably is the motherboard. Very few P35 boards are able to hold a 45nm quad at 450mhz.

The P5Q Pro is the one I would go for. The Gigabytes are meant to be very good too, tho I haven't played with any of their P45 ones myself.

Q9550 at 3.6GHz on 1.15 volts (stable on prime 95 24 hour test) could go higher but liking the low power and cool temps. low 20's on idle and 40ish on max load prime 95 torture test. All on air as ive never used water before.

Very good chip lovely upgrade from my old dual core which was getting a bit warm.

Here's mine. I was using an old version of real temp so the TJmax wasn't set right. I have the new version now and temps are only 2-3 degrees higher. Must be the AS5 curing knocking a few deg off.

PC is water cooling with my Q9550 and overclocked GTX280 in the same loop

DFI Lanparty mATX board. I recon this cpu could go further but my ram is holding me back (4gb of 800mhz ram currently running at 940). I am happy with this overclock though so going to leave it at that.
