***The Official Yorkfield Q9300/Q9450/Q9550 Overclocking Thread ***

My Q9550 has arrived. :) It's a C1, which I think is good right?

Anyone else find that theirs is running quite hot?

I ll be getting a Q9550 or its bigger brother soon, I m hoping for 3.8Ghz (at least)out of it on air cooling. if my Q6600 did it I m sure it can =) I will keep ya posted :P

nope you want the EO version really....should still get 3.8 on C1 though

Gonna need to improve cooling first though me thinks. At 3.4 now with 1.2v and I'm touching 70degC at 100% load! not:cool:

I've got some mods to do tomorrow that should help. Pretty pleased with the low vcore though.

DFI Lanparty mATX board. I recon this cpu could go further but my ram is holding me back (4gb of 800mhz ram currently running at 940). I am happy with this overclock though so going to leave it at that.

Im having problems getting this board stable at stock, can you post youe BIOS settings that are not on auto/default please?

Thanks :)

yeh my chip was great but hit a wall at 3.6 and needed a big jump in Vcore to get stable at 3.8 :(
hehe and sort you cooling out :)

That is running quite warm, what cooler are you using? mine idles at 20 and is around 40-43 at 100% load, core temps around 50-56.

It's because the rad is trapped in it's own air now, which is nearly 40degC. Once I've moved it where it can draw cooler air, 20degC ambient in the room, then those temps will come right down.............I hope! :p

Been running my Q9550 @ 3.4 for some time (Asus P5K Prem motherboard - Bios- fsb@400+cpu volts 1.1875+ ram @ no overclock) - no issues.:D

Am running a Tuniq Tower Idle 38/40c Load +10/12

Decided to try for 3.6 by increasing FSB to 424 and cpu to 1.2250 . Ram slightly overclocked . Again stable but load temps increased by approx 7c

Then tried @ 3.8 - Again increased FSB (450) and volts (1.2375). Ram slightly underclocked. Booted o'k , ran mem.test -no prob's; then tried Prime , after 5 mins or so BSOD. Was watching temps throughout running same as 3.6.clock.

All other settings on Auto throughout.

Was a bit dissapointed at fail at 3.8 ; should I have been ? Probable cause ?

HOWEVER did notice that actual increase in performance (granted my ,totally subjective/non-scientific interpretaion) from 3.4 to 3.6 was negligable (in standard use +games) BUT temps were +15% approx which I was not impressed with at all :(

Is it worth pushing my CPU to 3.8 and above ?

Or is 3.4 the 'sweet spot' with increases in speed above this not worth it because of need for increased volts and thereby quickly increasing temps with not that much in performance gain ?

You may be able to achieve 3.8 but you could be getting close to an fsb wall, so voltages may have to climb pretty steep to get it completely stable and as you have witnessed this can have a major knock on effect with regards to load temps.

In the real world the difference between 3.4 and 3.6 will be pretty insignificant.

I'm trying to get my Q9550 E0 run @4GHz but somehow I cant. It boots Vista no problem even on 4165MHz and is prime small ftts stable but when it comes to blend test i fails after couple of seconds on anything higher than 450fsb 3825MHz. Also it fails Vista memory diagnostics tool when higher than 450fsb. I was trying to tweak everything in the bios all voltages etc. no success always fails memory test above 450fsb. So my question is what is causing the problem? Before Q9550 i had E6850 on the same mobo and memory running 480fsb blend stable.

Hey z10m,

I'm just looking at the differences between a Intel® Core™2 Quad Q9550 and a Intel® Core™2 Duo E6850, one uses an x8.5 Multi and the other uses a x9, don't see how that effects anything but still! :D

I've noticed personally that after 400MHz-450MHz-FSB everything seems lot easier if you run your memory on a divider i.e not 1:1 sync, I'm not sure why this is but hopefully will have some answers soon?

The only other thing I can see is perhaps the Northbridge has more more to do with a Quad-Core so perhaps add more vNB?

changing NB voltage makes no diffrence. memory is running 1:1 and so it was on E6850. No matter what i do im stuck on stable 450fsb. So it looks like my mobo is a crap...

Seems strange your last dual-core chip did 480MHz-FSB but your Quad doesn't like more than 450MHz?

I'm doing some WOlfdale clocking atm and had a similar *blend* issue around 450MHz-FSB . . . this was using 1:1 sync, however I flicked up the memory frequency from DDR2-900 to DDR2-1066 and all my problems went away, 100% pass in everything and I was able to drop vNB and vTT volts from like 1.3 down to stock 1.12!

I can't explain it any better than that but I am thinking 1:1 memory isn't the best thing above 400MHz . . . Have you played around with your FSB-straps or?

So it looks like my mobo is a crap...
Well I have had a good run with both a P5Q-Deluxe and now a P5Q-E, both very solid boards but they come with a steep learning curve, maybe your just not doing something right?

[edit] btw is the memory in your sig what you are using?

4GB OCZ 6400C5

If it is surely that is holding you back? :p

yes that's the memory I'm using. I thought that if memory was fine with duo on higher fsb it is not the problem. anyways i cant go with higher memory divider with that modules so i will sell those and buy some 1066 modules... what cheap and good 1066 modules can you recommend..??

Anything less than 1.5v for 3.8ghz and it just blue screens, Maybe i just have a really poor chip as i've had a QX9650 at 4.5ghz in this rig before and it never needed such extream voltages on the north bridge, CPU PLL, FSB Termination ect before.
