**The one and only Official BioShock Thread**- now with added **SPOILERS**

hehe I purchased it today online at work as a present to myself to play whilst I was offline in new accommodation. What a fool I am. Should have done some research 1st. Oh well, gotta just hope it arrives before d-day..

[edit] just remembered I have an old 56k modem lying around & my BT line should be working by the time I move in. Phew there is still hope...

Way too many pages for me to scroll through right now.
Question: Is it possible to activate this without an internet connection? (will be without a connection for a week or 2).

Not legally. There's an illegal crack that can be applied if you want to remove the securerom lameness. As I have internet, the STEAM version works well enough for me (e.g. I'm too lazy to get the crack/apply it).

Yeah but it still crashes as it loads up the next level, suprised there as been no patch yet.
Tried dropping all the graphics down, no luck, ran through the previous level, no luck. XP too, I would expect this of Vista not XP :p

I know how you feel. I've had loads of crashing problems in XP. For instance, in my first run through of the game I couldn't hack even one of the normal vending machines without it instantly CTDing. Le unwoot :/ The only way I could get the game to run in an even remotely stable way was to run it in windowed mode with high detail shaders turned off. Even then, I still had the odd CTD and the previously mentioned vending machine problem.

*spoilers*

for me at least i did like the game very much. it had a good story with nice twists that made me want to finish it, felt more of a normal FPS game tho.

it took me only a weekend to finish it tho which was abit disappointing i was hoping that it would take maybe a week but never mind ill finish it again this time taking the good route

ok just got this game, hate having to keep going back and forth to get anywhere, seems a bit silly to me :p
good game other than that, just in the dentist bit atm

finally completed it. Brilliant game, very good story. I found the game was v easy, big daddys were way too easy to kill imho. They were so easy to kill they were my cash cows, when ever i needed money i just killed a few of them :D. Near the end they were a joke i could take 2 at the same time and only take 1 hit if any (the electic attack at lvl3 owns them so badly).

Even though the game was sooo easy, the story more then made up for it, well worth it imo.

to the game makers: Would you kindly make a sequel :p

the game was sooo easy

I'll ask what we're all thinking... what difficulty were you playing at? I'm playing on hard, and while I'm doing alright I'd think saying sooo easy is a bit of a stretch.

I should also say that I'm just at Neptunes Bounty aswell and am about to take on my 2nd big daddy.

Well I thought it was quite tough because I seemed to always be very short of ammo
also did not like weapons switching/handling much ! overall a good game IMO but not the best ever FPS

normal, yeah i know i should play it on the hard settings, but on normal it should be a bit more difficult. Your on neptunes bounty, just wait a while and see how easy the game/daddys get. The thing that makes the daddys easy is when taking damage they stop, or if hit with electricity (i shocked them with the lvl 3, with the electrical boosting tonic) they stay shock for such a long time. Once you can take down the daddys easily, bang! you instantly have a source for unlimited money. Once you have money ammo aint a problem, and (in normal) the shottie can take down splicers (once upgraded) in one upclose shot in the few few levels. Once the splicers get tougher, just switch to your crossbow and upgrade that and they go down again in 1 -2 shots.

The nitro splicers are stronger right at the end so i just get them in the head and bam down they go in one shot.

a lot of the enemys (inc big daddys) become v easy when you get the chameleon tonic as you can not move thus become invisible and take your time and head shot any splicer in one shot, the big daddys all you have to do is hit them, run hide and they wont be able to see you when you turn invisible and then rinse and repeat.

I'm not saying the game was a walkover, but it wasnt that hard, any game where you can beat the the final boss with a wrench when you have guns have difficultly issues :D

a lot of people told me that they only wasted ammo on the big daddys as they only used the wrench, i'm told once you have that powered up guns become abit redundant.

i am hopelessly stuck...

i finished Arcadia/Farmers Market, healed the trees and all that jazz...

so went on to the next level, killing people and taking photos...but it says i have to return to Arcadia to collect chlorophyll. i have searched high and low in the rolling hills in the houdini splicers caves etc and cant seem to find any. i have 6 of 7...
very confusing as i dont know how to update the objectives. think i will head back to the artist bit and see if i can progress from there...

all a bit odd dontcha think?!

From what I recall it tells you exactly where and from what to obtain the chlorophyll and the other 2 items you need in the "mission description" which you can access from the map screen.

I also seem to recall that I'd already got 3 or 4 of chlorophyll by the time the game told me I had to collect them so I would suggest a bit more exploring and splicer killing is in order - in fact if you go do the other 2 items first chances are some of the splicers you kill might drop some for you.

If it's the bit I think You do go around in circles a bit, are You using the ingame mission arrow and help ?

Finally got round to completing the game today, playing through from Fort Frolic onwards. Here is my summary of thoughts on the game:

-It's more fun to play than System Shock 2, in that I wanted to keep coming back to the game
-Framerate is a bit suspect in big fights involving multiple splicers and bots
-The early part of the game is a bit boring, mainly due to the lack of plasmids/weapons/cash/ammo. This probably explains why I left the game untouched for a month or two after very little playtime.
-The plot twist is very predictable.
-I encountered a bug where it continually displays the message 'pickup the bomb' or similar after I've already used it - even continuing on to later levels.
-The overall atmosphere and design of the game is good - Rapture is a very stylised and believable place
-The flow of the game is decent, in particular I thought the goal arrow was implemented well. A few suspect places however, such as one level near the end where I'd already killed all 3 big daddies, and then had to backtrack through the level to collect a quest item from their bodies, that wasn't there until the quest was triggered.
-Combat is not the strongpoint of this game. Aside from the crossbow (which I made good use of in the battle with Fontaine), most of the weapons are rather unsatisfying and hard to use. Not helped by the laggy mouse.
-The infinite respawns does make the game a little easy in places. I think a better approach might have been to have an additional cost for using a Vita-chamber, maybe 10 Adam or something like that.
-Seems a bit strange that ice is immune to high-powered weaponry like grenades and armour piercing bullets.
-Length of the game seemed fine to me. I would guess it took me around 16hrs (guess).

Overall, I'd say it is probably the 4th best game I have played this year, behind Orange Box, FM2007 and Freelancer.

One question, does it have any effect on the gameplay if you rescue the little sisters rather than harvesting them?
