The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

This is a bit of a gamble but currently, Twitter isn't exactly super profitable, it perhaps will address the spammer/bots situation and aspects of the opaque algorithm, if you pay to be verified then appearing higher in the replies seems fair vs some random anon **** poster type account (even though I do have a couple of those myself!).

He could at the very least have put his hand up and sid, look I ****** up posting that link people. He didn't do that though.

I doubt that would have made people happy, he alluded it it in a later tweet admitting he makes bad tweets but some people have already decided he's a bad person now and they're unlikely to be too satisfied with anything he does and/or will have been critics whether he'd left the tweet up or deleted it, he doesn't need to pander to that.

spammers and bots only need one person to put a misplaced level of trust in a bought and paid for blue tick for it to potentially pay for hundreds of other bot accounts.

You already see it happening with accounts that just close enough to fool "easy marks" (so Elon Musk vs E1on Musk etc) and not realise that the blue thingy at the end of the name is just symbol that looks vaguely like a tick but is really part of the character set, so if you start getting E1on Musk with a verified tick because someone made an account and paid for it (probably with a stolen card) then changed the name it's going to be far more successful.

It's also worth noting that people paying for a blue tick does absolutely nothing to stop bots and spammers signing up and not bothering with a blue tick.

And the first big name who doesn't, but gets an impersonator who does is likely to teach Musk why they had the bluechecks in the first place, probably as part of a court settlement.

That has happened for years already, there is the practice of selling on blue check accounts to scammers, every so often a fake Elon complete with blue check appears and makes some crypto offer like "sent BTC to this address and I'll send double back.. lol just having fun guys" and people fall for it.

But it's also done for a bit of banter, there is an African American rapper who has a little comedy bit where he changed his profile pic, display name to some white Hollywood celebrity and then makes a tweet about himself, like a photo of him + famous actor he's impersonating with some comment saying "my [n-word]". It goes viral and you get a mixture of shock and people noticing the Twitter handle in the replies.

Having broader verification can certainly be useful, especially if they deal with impersonators far more quickly, currently, complete clone accounts of big tweeters can stay up for weeks even after being reported several times and continually spamming/attempting to scam people, there seems like there ought to be plenty of room for improvement there, if you have an existing account and it is verified and someone makes a complete clone using your pfp, display name, profile description etc.. it ought to be trivial for you to report and for it to be rapidly suspended.

It's also worth noting that people paying for a blue tick does absolutely nothing to stop bots and spammers signing up and not bothering with a blue tick.

Eh? I think it's worth noting that he's also looking to address that though if you read the Elon tweet again you'll see he's mentioned prioritizing replies from verified users. Verification seems like a pretty good idea if you want to crack down on bots and spammers. I don't think anyone is claiming you can get rid of them completely.

These guys literally begging for a social credit system

As an example, considering how quickly people fell for the "Paul Pelosi gay date gone bad story" its safe to say most people are idiots who will believe anything. If foreign adversaries are attempting to undermine our country and society then damn right we should protect ourselves.

But a blue tick told them so. Infact the owner of Twitter told everyone. The actual owner of the town square is a CT pusher. Dear god.

Lol half as many ads... how very pointless.

That's a minor detail though nice to have - if you're paying then why should you have so many ads (from a business pov though people who do pay are gonna be more valuable as a group anyway sort of like iPhone users vs android users), a priority in replies, search etc.. is helpful for the many users who use twitter to actively network, that extends way beyond current blue checkmark types, something which is heavily skewed towards people working at traditional media outlets even if they have relatively few twitter followers.

I love that Musk has twitter now. It had become such a cesspool, if it scares off the worst of the userbase with him owning it, nothing of value was lost.

I love Twitter. Its a fantastic place for getting news and following what you are interested in. Its not difficult to avoid the worst of the scummy posters on there. I will be a bit gutted if it returns to the cesspit it was before they started moderating it or the verified users just leave in droves.

The people who instantly believed that story with no evidence are the sort of people who believe vaccines are tracking them etc.. Even though Elon rightly got criticised for sharing it he still assigned it rather a low probability.

Can we just be clear here, nobody wants an online platform filled with racism and abuse, including Elon Musk. If anyone thinks Elon Musk will allow Twitter to turn in that then they aren't very bright.

Someone putting their hand up and saying I ****** up generally gets a lot of respect. Just deleting it and disappearing for hours not so much. If you mean he cares about what the nutters who believe that CT think of him then god help us as Twitter is screwed.

Its not just the ones who fully buy into it. Its the doubt it causes over a subject. Its easy to spread a lie, its damned hard to counter it once its taken hold and they just keep adding up. Foreign governments that are not our friends have been using social media for years now and have got brilliant at it. If our government wasn't trying to counter this threat I'd call them inept.

.... oh **** we're screwed :(
