The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

That's a given, I'm addressing the commentary about him deleting it, given he's posted some dumb fake news should he take responsibility for it and remove it or should he leave it up there?

Yup, but that isn't what I'm replying to.

He could at the very least have put his hand up and sid, look I ****** up posting that link people. He didn't do that though.

.
Reading more about this blue tick thing, apparently there is 360k blue tick users to date. Charging them raises approx 86 million.

Advertisers spend about 5 billion.

Such small change at the risk of pushing away the ones who make the content for twitter.

If anything, twitter could charge a 1 off fee to get your blue tick, and then with that you get a host of privaliages. You then continue to freely make the content that users then view, and advertisers continue to advertise next to.
Yup

I saw what appears to be Stephen King commenting on it earlier and Musk's response was "how about $8".

I honestly don't think Musk gave it any thought before coming out with his genius idea of charging the people that supply the "product" twitter sells, without understanding that many of those blue ticks are using it because it's easier than the alternatives and despite all it's many downsides and issues, not because they love the service and are willing to pay more for it than they do for services that they actually enjoy using.

The whole $20 a month thing feels more and more like it was a "how much can a dozen eggs cost" type thing when it came down to the pricing and a very deep misunderstanding of how people view twitter, unless he was expecting everyone to do something along the lines of claim it as a business expense

In much the same way that everyone seems to worship him for inventing everything at SpaceX, when the guy has a basic physics degree (with economics) and nothing else. He had the money to get the people who actually design and create these things without being stifled by government contracts and budgets so off they went and created the (incredibly successful) Falcon 9 series.

You only have to look at the myriad of failed projects and grifts to see the real Musk - the same guy who said we'd have started a colony on Mars by now using his Starship design.

I think you are being a little harsh there. SpaceX has changed the space industry and engineers sing Musk's praises, there is a video somewhere in this thread of a a rocket scientist saying he thought he was bright then he met Musk.
Everyone said you couldn't make a reusable rocket and he made a reusable rocket. Starship should launch soon and I wouldn't be surprised if it actually makes it to orbit, they land the booster and get a soft landing in the ocean of the Starship. I just watched Falcon Heavy launch for the 3rd time and it performed perfectly and both boosters landed bullseye on their landing pads.

Musk can be a proper douche, he claims to love humanity but he is happy to throw petrol on the fire of political divisions in the US and throw his oar into geo politics where he has no business getting involved in. I really do wish he'd think before he does things.

Every innovator has failures. Microsoft had the Zune, what a colossal failure that was but Bill Gates and the other leaders at Microsoft were still geniuses.

Elon Time is a term now. Yes he very often massively over sells the timescales on his projects. I don't doubt he will send Starship and humans to Mars though.

There are multiple videos of him talking with Everydayastronaut (youtuber) where Elon goes into the advanced designs of the various engines/rockets of SpaceX including his ideas and motivations.

Its clear from those videos hes not just a simple dude shoving money into SpaceX. Half the idiots who like to say stuff like that have never seen him talking in detail about the physics/engineering which he was very much involved in.

I can't find the social media thread that used to be on here were I was complaining of the power dynamics of the websites.

Now a new US government leak as come out exposing how the government is using social media sites to manipulate the public conversation.

In case some think this is just a right wing issue I'll post Kyle Kulinski's video report on his Secular Talk channel. He's on the left. All people involved in political discussion should be concerned about this exposure.

Social media is a warzone with state actors trying to destabilise our countries so there is no circumstance in which governments don't intervene in that.

People will pay the $8 for a blue tick because “ego”.
And the first big name who doesn't, but gets an impersonator who does is likely to teach Musk why they had the bluechecks in the first place, probably as part of a court settlement.

The idea that you should have to pay to protect your real world ID on a site is quite something, given it's normally the sites operator who is legally responsible for preventing that/taking reasonable steps to deal with it (and requiring people to pay to protect themselves is not usually considered reasonable).

In other news it looks like one of the big advertising companies is recommending it's customers (including the likes of coca cola and johnson and johnson) pause spending on twitter until they know what's going on with it's various safety and legal poliies, so musk might need all the $8 subs he can get to fill that hole, especially if more of the advertising companies start making similar reccommendations.
