The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

Can we just be clear here, nobody wants an online platform filled with racism and abuse, including Elon Musk. If anyone thinks Elon Musk will allow Twitter to turn in that then they aren't very bright.

Elon doesn't give a **** what happens to Twitter - he just wants money and attention to feed his narcissism. The fact he was forced into buying it in the first place should tell you everything about his plan - he just wanted to get into the news again by pretending to make an offer and then finding a reason to pull out, hence he completely skipped doing any due diligence and offering way more than what it could possibly be worth. Unfortunately for him, as he's not a lawyer and more of an idiot, this massively backfired and now he's stuck with it. I'm looking forward to grabbing my popcorn and watching the entire thing come crashing down.

Yes some people want exactly that. You might not want it, I might not want it but lots do want it. They want to be able to say anything they like, for them free speech means exactly that. Twitter was like that back in 2015. I hope my worst fears aren't realised, maybe the threats of the big advertisers and verified users leaving will keep it from becoming a cesspit.

Just read about the proposed £8 monthly fee for the verified tick. He must be desperate to try and rinse as much money out of Twitter that he can.

These guys literally begging for a social credit system

So a Chinese spy account today was banned, it was pretending to be a MAGA account and spreading misinformation ahead of the election. So you wouldn't want the government to tell a social media company if they discover such accounts? I don't care which side of the aisle they are spreading disinformation on, they are attempting to destroy our society.

Not many bots will pay £8 for an account though

China almost certainly has spies in high level US Government agencies like the NSA and other Intelligence agencies, to say they have spy accounts on Twitter isn't even news worthy

If you mean he cares about what the nutters who believe that CT think of him then god help us as Twitter is screwed.

Why would he care about CT nutters?

Foreign governments that are not our friends have been using social media for years now and have got brilliant at it. If our government wasn't trying to counter this threat I'd call them inept.

.... oh **** we're screwed :(

This seems like hyperbole tbh... As much as people like to laugh at CT nutters plenty of people also seem to have similar blind spots when it comes to areas they're a bit paranoid about - see for example Cambridge Analytica, some very basic data analysis got hyped into some big scare story where that organisation was given far more credit than they're due, people love that sort of thing if it panders to their biases though - Orange man bad, secretive manipulative data firm was responsible. Ditto to blaming the Russians for Brexit etc.. that's a powerful story for some people, throw in some evidence that it's what Russia wants and you see why it becomes attractive, ditto to the pro-Russian types who buy into "the CIA' carrying out a "coup" in Ukraine, the pointing out some recorded phone call as evidence... that someone wanted something and it happened doesn't necessarily imply causation, but people will skip over the handwaving stuff in favour of scattered scraps of evidence to support their narrative.. just as CT types love to do.

Back in reality, I've created a silly little cartoon dog account after making a donation to the Georgian legion along with thousands of others to troll Russia online and they're completely powerless vs us. For every Russian post I and others pop in and dump memes, troll them and they hate it, they're not capable of countering it even with their paid click-farm employees.

They wanted to get close to the Conservatives but in reality, Boris turned out to be one of the biggest Zelensky supporters out there, Truss was potentially even worse for them and Sunak isn't doing them any favours either... the Defence Secretary has remained constant throughout and avoided the leadership race in part because of the crisis in Ukraine.

All the Russians seem to be able to do with their supposedly powerful bot armies is manipulate some fringe figures like the fat ****** Kim Dotcom or the Syrian girl etc..

I imagine he cares rather a lot about all the crypto scammers using his image to draw in morons who then despise him for losing their money without even being involved. Probably some level of connection to the general nuttery on the internet.

In the disinformation war that has led to Brexit and other such 'morons biting off their own noses' type election results, and the millions being spent on cyber warfare, I dont think €8 £ or $ will be a barrier to entry for the bots that we need to worry about.

You've got no idea how successful the Russians or Chinese have been in sowing disinformation in society. They wouldn't be doing it if it had no effect.

Are you trying to say you are better at it than Russian and Chinese governments? I know you think highly of yourself dowie but give your head a shake ffs.

Yep considering they are free to scam and steal to raise funds I don't think raising $8 a month is going to break the bank.

Me as an individual? Where did I say that? Yet again here you are wilfully misrepresenting what I've just said. You're seemingly unaware of NAFO yet you could go and check out literally most official Russian posts right now. If we're so bad at it then why do the Russians hate us so much?

Also if they're so good at it then why are they failing constantly? What tangible successes have they had in recent months with their amazing social media abilities? Hmm I'm sure the Russians would never invest so much money into something they're actually bad at... nah that could never happen, they're a really well-run country with plenty of honest characters at every level who would never embellish reports or cover their own asses... I think perhaps you need to give your own head a shake if that's the extent of your argument. Please fee free to add something substantial if you have anything.

Well America is tearing itself apart, a large chunk of the right is pro Russia in this war and believe the Russian propaganda that Ukraine is full of nazis. The GOP House will likely try and cut aid to Ukraine come January. The Senate Intelligence Committee report said Russia was actively working to help Trump get over the line. They worked with WikiLeaks to release the emails. So I would say they had great success. The fact we aren't aware of exactly what they are doing now doesn't mean they aren't active.

That's great you are taking the memes to pro Russian account in regards to the war. What are you doing with regards to accounts that aren't mentioning Russia and appear to be American of British but are stirring up discontent? The last thing we need is our governments and social media companies to take their eye off the ball and I have no problem with our intelligence services stepping in to stop them.

Ah, Democrats spreading baseless assumptions that the nudist hippie is a Trump supporter, and yet again and the usual suspects on here spreading it.

Neighbors describe him as a left winger, is a BLM activist and into gay pride, the attacker was in his underwear on the scene, 911 call shows Paul Pelosi told police he was a friend, there are pictures of the intruder's home filled with left wing signs, police on the scene said they were both holding hammers, the attack didn't happen until the police arrived, there's pictures of the window debris on the outside of the house, there's a witnesses who say he was a gay prostitute, Pelosi is 3rd in line to the Presidancy so where was the security if it was an intruder. There's more evidence of him being a leftist homosexual having a drug fueled orgy like Hunter than him being some crazy MAGA guy.

Post the camera footage if you want to disprove it.

In a thread chock full of mind-bogglingly bad takes this one stands loud and proud as the absolute worst.

How many bridges do you currently own ?

Musk has a great new idea, what could possibly go wrong?

No explanation as to how you can prevent someone impersonating you and buying their own blue check.

Do you not have to provide ID or some kind of proof of who you are prior to being given a blue tick ? If so I would imagine the same would apply if you had to pay.

I thought so too, but his 'lords and peasants' reference seems to imply this would no longer be the case. Just a blue check for anyone who can cough up $8/month, it seems. I'm happy to be corrected, but if he means something different he needs to be more explicit about it.

Presumably a a "premium" check mark that is a different colour/shape.

Apparently the credit agencies aren't happy with Twitter and are downgrading it's rating based largely on "governance issues", the banks that loaned much of the money are expecting to lose a lot of it, one of the biggest advertising agencies is tellings it's customers to hold off placing any more adverts on Twitter, GM have pulled their adverts, and various of the department heads (ones who weren't fired by Musk on day 1) have either been fired or resigned including the head of core technology and safety.

It really does sound like Musk is doing brilliantly and may beat Murdoch and Yahoo in the biggest loss incurred by buying a social media site.

Aye it sounds like it's going to far more lax than at the moment, IIRC at the moment you need to be both a public/notable figure in some way and prove it, then prove your ID.

I've seen actors who have been in hundreds of productions on IMDB, named (and in some cases top/near top) billing in major stage performance complain about how hard it can be to get verified at the moment because the criteria can be very hard to meet or it seems to depend to a degree on who looks into your request (and how they view various sources).
