The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

Which begs me to ask, what were they trying to achieve by causing advertisers to come away from Twitter?
Because if they really love/care/value the platform, why try to destroy it more? Have they written off Twitter, and are now just happier if it went away forever?
I am confused.
It's all hyperbole mate. The advertisers have clearly said they are pulling out temporarily to see what direction the platform goes in.

It's a none story and makes obvious sense.

Advertisers aren't pulling out because of the actions of some sinister group of faceless activists, they're pulling out because they don't want their brands associated with nutjobs and trolls, and - if Musk does go ahead with his pants on head verification ideas - a platform which will cheerfully hand out verified status ticks to scammers pretending to be those brands. It's not "activists" causing this, it's the expected impact of Musk's plans on the toxicity of the platform.

Exactly brand safety is a big issue in advertising right now. No one wants a call from a Disney Exec at 2am asking why their ad was showing against a piece of dodgy content or in twitters case a Kanye tweet so it's easier for ad agencies to drop it and see how things shake out

Of course you're confused. You're trying to look at it in a way that doesn't exist. It's simple and obvious why advertisers are pulling out.

Elon is now the face of twitter. Elon has spread conspiracy theory when the 3rd most powerful politician in America has an attempted attack/murder. He does it in such a childish way. This looks bad in Elon, who is now the face of twitter, so it looks bad in twitter, and advertisers don't like that.

Elon responds like a god damn child to AOC about that endless charge to the creators and compares it to a one off charge to a customer.

Elon now posts just like trump. "waaaa look at all the nasty people making me fail. It's not my fault. You're all so mean. It's use v.s them."

Advertisers don't like that one bit.

They are smart to pull back and access these changes and see if twitter brand still fits their goal.

My guess is, if things continue the way they have, twitter won't be the place to advertise on any more.

And then the vicious cycle really starts. Elon gets more and more desperate to make money as good companies go.

He brings back users like trump and the rest, and then emboldens them to post more rubbish.

More advertisers go.

More users go.

Elon go.

But at least Elon is going to stsrt charging £8 per month on Monday. Genius.

Advertisers will cow to activitists very loudly to help with image, then slowly and quietly come back when the furore has died down :D

What activists? I've seen next to nothing on twitter. I saw lots with Kayne and people getting on @Adidas and his other sponsors but even then it took them a couple of weeks to cave and that was in your face anti Semitism. Looks ot me like Elon has caused this himself by being Elon.

Alternatively -

Elon - "Look, nothings changed on Twitter and I'm openly working with all these anti-hate groups yet the activists have still attacked Twitter's revenue stream. This just proves there's no point working with any more activist groups so, instead, now I can go all in against them and start removing all of their moderation"

Which leads to twitter becoming a worse place all whilst all the anti-hate groups are too busy patting themselves on the back, unwilling to see the damage they've just caused.

I think the over-reaction from people demanding Advertisers pull out is as silly as "cutting your nose off to spite your face" - Twitter won't go away and by attacking Musk it'll just embolden him to take the gloves off and Twitter really doesn't need that.

Did any of this happen outside of your head?

Except for the fact that none of that actually happened. Elon is looking for a scapegoat to blame for his monumental **** up. Advertisers said when he took over that they were stepping back to see what Twitter was going to be like under his rule, so this is old news. He's behaved like a child, "its my party and I'll do what I like!" That is fine, it is his party and he can do as he likes but companies don't have to pay to be associated with it. He'll either learn that lesson or he won't but crying about it on Twitter isn't going to do a damned thing to change the situation. He might be better off reaching out to these companies and listening to their concerns and then acting on them.

AI must have come on leaps and bounds, all those Twitter bots are now going to moderate, maintain and develope the app without Musk having to pay wages.

Amusingly after the prank the other day with the fake Twitter employees Ligma & Johnson the media who got trolled now seem to be a bit reluctant to try again outside the Twitter offices on the day of the actual layoffs!

There has also been an ongoing joke for the past few days of people posting "I was the Twitter employee responsible for..." which has perhaps obscured the usual posts from the actual laid-off tech employees.

"I was the Twitter employee responsible for..."
.. who monitored for footballer and celebrity racist tweets - so much for AI ... is just like the room of typists at start of Brazil/1984 ,
so the poor footballers will have to look after themselves at Qatar, or leave.

The numbers are in they will fluctuate slightly but not by much.

The 8 dollar blue tick thing will bring him 2.8 million a month . Sounds a lot but Musk is 60 billion in the red for this one. its not even close to enough.

Advertising will go way down too as some big companies withdraw advertising.

So his 43 billion will be almost impossible to get back.

His little I'm gonna buy twitter joke has backfired on him big time.

Hes a despicable person. There is a video of a guy who got fired going round with the way he got fired, it's literally a Photo printed on A4 paper with him laughing and a big caption saying "your Fired"
Apparently a lot of employees got it.

I'm a bit sceptical but I wouldn't put it past him.

Will it?

Buying a blue tick will be open to all plebs and just because you have one for free today doesn't mean you want to pay for one especially after what it means changes.
I've seen a couple of current blue ticks joke about how NOT having one will be the indicator that you're the real person.

Apparently there are leaked emails that suggest that there will be no verification that you're who you say you are when you pay for a blue tick which probably isn't surprising given musk seems to have laid off most of the people whose job it was to verify them and there were not enough people to do the job as it was.
