The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

OK I'll bite, why is the usage so high? Is it people lurking to find out if Twitter really is going to die?

Also what does he mean by "usage"? Does he mean tweets sent? I know that a lot of people are freaking out thinking their accounts are going to be closed.

Of course Twitter usage is at an all time high, Elon and Twitter are front page news everyday, it's the hot topic. He probably closed the office for a headline because it's free PR :D

It's high because Daddy Elon says it's high. All dissenting voices at Twitter HQ have now been disposed of.

Does Twitter still have the staff it needs to deal with these? Doesn't seem likely.

Unclear, in terms of numbers it seems plausible that the site could at least run with far fewer staff, the issue is perhaps key teams all leaving, getting new people up to speed with complex, often undocumented, code is not easy and can take months.

If I were one of those key people I'd be tempted to ask for a very big pay rise or daily rate to come back in as a contractor!

I once ran the planning department for a company of about 1,700 people on 2 sites.

We were taken over and the 'experts' from the new owners started shutting down stuff without understanding what the implications were and resolutely not listening to those of us that did.

Within 2 weeks people's access to the building started failing, payroll fell over and IT access started getting revoked.

That was so small scale and simple in comparison to what I imagine the Twitter world must be like I can't think how much might unravel there.

The issue also comes with, what happens when faults are found. When android, apple etc require new features and settings
Yup

As I said a while back things like the "accessabiity" teams may not seem to be doing "much", as they were quite small but you need them (and their very specialist expertise) to find and fix bugs in what can be quite narrow but technical areas, and you need to have people who are specialists for every major OS you support as what might work for Android might break something under IOS or might not work there because of different ways in which the OS's handle things.

Do you reckon Elon has enough contacts in the technology industry to find some new people and/or get some help in the interim, or do you think he's stumped and having a panic attack at some people leaving because he asked them to work harder?

Who is gonna go? Even people he has got rid off and may want back, they'll be asking for double their salary.

Contractors might take it for a hefty fee, but anyone in relatively stable employment ain't going to jump into that bin fire. Elon might have to start giving away rides into space to get people to work for Twitter.

Anyone smart enough will be asking for 7 figure sums so probably a horde of sycophants will line up with poor credentials for a chance to pray at the Muskian altar.

I reckon when you own Tesla, SpaceX, and Neurolink you probably have a decent address book of people you can contact in the tech industry to get some help.

How long do you reckon it takes a new replacement programmer to reach the level of knowledge of the system of the people he's lost? Plus he's promising silly unproductive hours, no home working, and the threat of bankruptcy, it's not exactly an ideal setup for attracting the best.

"the best" in tech is absolutely not working at social media companies or Twitter lmao

I really don't get it, people acting like the world would end if it disappeared or went offline for a bit, its just twitter, the world functioned pretty well before it came along, seems very cultish.

I would argue that programmers at this stage are less important than the infrastructure and operations staff, I think pretty much every department taken a hit though, for what it is, it seemed to be way over staffed with them having a jolly time, looks like the gravy train has pulled up at its last stop :D
