The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

Twitter overlord Elon Musk seems to have violated his own rules about posting satirical content without a disclaimer — only to laugh off the fake news as a jab at CNN.

Elon Musk trolled the cable news network Monday by posting a Photoshopped image of anchor Don Lemon with the headline of a fake news story.

“CNN: Elon Musk could threaten free speech on Twitter by literally allowing people to speak freely,” Musk tweeted.

The image included a screenshot of Lemon next to a stock photo of Musk. The chyron below is identical to the headline.

Twitter users immediately added a disclaimer to Musk’s tweet, reminding visitors to the site that the CNN story wasn’t real.

“The screencap in this image is not real and originated from a satirical website,” the disclaimer read.

CNN’s public relations department posted a screenshot of Musk’s tweet, which included a disclaimer saying that the tweet was in violation of Twitter’s rules.

“This headline never appeared on CNN. Be better,” CNN’s PR team tweeted at Musk.

Musk brushed off CNN’s response, tweeting: “Lmaoooo.” Those are the initials for “laughing my ass off.”

I'm going to hazard a guess that there may have been legal reasons for not taking down the hashtag sooner, as that would be about the only reason to leave something like that up but plan to take it down for a while. Waiting for law enforcement to say finish prepping for raids would be a major one for hashtags but not necessarily actual media (and I think I saw on the news that there had been raids in relation to abuse organised/paid for using social media recently).

I was seeing that there is apparently only one person left dealing with that stuff for the whole of East Asia and Japan now at Twitter, which is a major issue as you need people who speak the language to understand what is being said, and be able to read between the lines of what is being talked about if for example people are using slang/euphemisms for it, not to mention you need people who can speak the language and know who/where to contact in law enforcement.
IIRC quite a lot of the problems with moderation on the various big social media platforms is down to things like overworked moderators who may not be native speakers of the language they are moderating for, or speak the language but don't share the same culture so don't quite grasp it (even in English there is plenty of grounds for misunderstanding between say Brits, Aussies and Americans because of different uses of common words and slang).

I think dowie should get a job working for Musk's PR team. He is certainly doing all the work here and not getting paid!

(I saw that post and was waiting how you can turn that into a position for Musk.)

Because it's not based on that post but rather it's based on the claims of an independent person who has been campaigning to get child abuse material removed from Twitter for a while now!

This was posted earlier in the thread but thankfully it seems someone else has saved me the trouble above too.

I think what you need to realise, is dowie has successfully done what he often does, and that is to take the conversation away from what it originally was about, and then make it about his inability to accept something and argue about exact wording, which dowie gets wrong.

Dowie has admitted Elon did tell people to vote republican.

The user made that claim and was making a point, a point that then gets lost and forgotten.

The best thing you can do, is go back to the point and show it still stands, even after pages of nonsense in between, dont get distracted.

Context! You got to remember the context !!!

What he is saying is "Distraction, let me distract you with someone else, let me move the goal posts!"

Dowie never denied that in the first place! Dowie literally linked to the tweet and has had this exact same conversation previously in the thread as Jono already knows!

You're acting like I'm unaware that he told *some* people to vote republican for a particular reason, and now I've "admitted" he has, that's simply not the case, I pointed this out in back on the 7th of November here:

He suggested independent voters vote Republican on the basis that the Presidency is held by a Democrat.

The claim that he told *everyone* to vote Republican is incorrect, he didn't do that, I took the time to explain that to Ray too today but seemingly he ignored it and carried on acting as though I was talking about Elon doing so "immediately" or various other claims.

This is again Jono trying to act like Elon is some right-wing guy when he's clearly a moderate, has mostly donated to democrats, is an independent and has claimed to have always voted democrat till now.
