Care to explain to those of us who don't know about this stuff?
The referral stuff alphabot posted above was on about facebook publisher referrals not DNS lookups.

DNS traffic is routings from your human input browser address to the IP address.
If you know the real ip address you can go directly rather than the DNS lookup of human address to IP address.

Sorry fighting my cat who is trying to sit on my keyboard as usual this time of night. Can't type more every key press is risk of injury!

Or better said

You can go to 192.168.3.4 (not a real address) to get to Facebook, or you can go to the human friendly address which is Facebook.com

You're probably right. People post pictures of the grey dreary rainy streets a lot more than they do of themselves on beaches, having cocktails, out in the sun.

Engagement is down with good weather and up with bad weather.

People engage less when their out and about doing stuff. Good weather gets people out and about. As we all know people don't post pictures to twitter, or not like Facebook and Instagram and they are reported to drop in summer. So it would make sense that engagement on twitter drops even more when the weather is good.

it would be interesting to know the cloudflare data for this time last year as a comparison (anyone able to pull that up?), whilst I think twitter would suffer more from good weather as opposed to something like instagram/Facebook where it's more common to post pictures and show the 'world' what you are doing, I think the drop also coincided with the login to view twitter - whether the drop is weather related/real people or bots/scraping tools who knows.

As to musky v robotman, folks understand trolling right? Some folks find it amusing others don't.

Businessmen must be super serious.

Referral traffic is not DNS traffic, well directly.
Referral traffic is people who reach a site by clicking on a link on another site, like when you click on a link in Google search results or a link on a companies site that takes you to their Twitter profile. DNS traffic is how much/many requests are made to servers with databases that translate human readable web addresses into machine readable IP addresses.

DNS traffic would give you a fuller picture as it captures all requests whereas referrals will miss out on people who type the address into the address bar of their browser and people who've bookmarked your site. Referrals are more useful in understanding how people are discovering your site.
