The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

Yeah welcome to online media in 2024 then. I see plenty of rubbish online I'd rather not see and have no interest in.

This is why I like Bluesky as an alternative to Twitter. You can define your own algorithm and not see any nonsense that you don’t want to see.

I’m sure that will all change if the platform gets popular and attracts more VC money. For now it is golden though.

Everyone has to voluntarily click to follow. So what we have is a man who has a wide reach because people chose to give him that reach, who uses his platform to talk about whatever he wants. The issue people here have is that they don't like his views, so they want his ability to speak to be lessened/removed. Even though Elon Musk is a private individual speaking on a platform where people voluntarily choose to follow him.
That's just plain wrong, I've seen a LOT of his posts on my timeline, and I do not follow him. Just like I see posts from lots of accounts I don't follow. He can also promote at a whim any post or any account as he sees fit, blocking him does nothing to reduce his ability to put posts on your timeline.

His reach, i.e. him being on your timeline, is a result of people organically choosing to follow him and like and retweet his posts. Do you have any evidence he's "promoting at a whim" posts to your timeline from other accounts? Why do you think he's doing that?

I just checked. I follow 51 accounts, about 1/2 of them are customer support accounts. Of the first 10 posts on the "for you" timeline, only 1 is from an account I follow. How do the others get there, I don't know the algorithm.

Around 80 posts or so, there is a direct tweet (not a retweet) from musk "at 5000 tons, starship is the largest flying object ever made", where he also retweets a post from spaceX

Do I think he has access to tools that means he can adjust the algorithm to his favour, and hence get onto more timelines, I definitely do.

I think this thread just needs moving to SC and renamed "The rise and fall of Elon Musk".. that is precisely what it is documenting..

The amount of bad faith posts by a small number of protagonists in this thread has gone beyond the original OT by several country miles.

This is absolutely what should happen, id imagine it'd be a nightmare for the mods though.

Probably easier to just allow it to go off topic constantly. Shame as Elon is an interesting character and no doubt will change the world, wether good or bad is undetermined yet. Probably for the good though, musk is the man.;)

The algorithm is open source. It’s been proven that X artificially boosts Musk’s tweets.

And it’s not just his tweets that are artificially boosted. Anyone with a paid account has their tweets boosted (although not by anywhere near as much).

The SpaceX launch is very cool though.

"I couldn't care less" - immediately reacts like a baby and cancels the contract. Yep sounds like he couldn't care less indeed.

Of course. It was no secret that Elon didn't like that Biden got more of a reaction than him so got the algo written to ensure his posts are promoted higher than they currently were.

The algo will be complex, and it won't likely say "if account == "Elon Musk " ( promote like crazy)

But instead it'll be more designed that it sees the style of posting, the reeweeting etc of whatever Elon gets, and then uses that as the basis of what it wants to see and promotes any content like that, which just happens to be what Elon tweets.

It's like saying Google don't promote their own content on the search platform, while if you Google just the word photos, top result is Google photos. Google the word maps. Top result Google maps.

The search engine won't say if product owned by Google then promote, but more, that both the engine and photos/maps are programmed to like and be exactly what the other wants.

Got to love roar adding his fan boi into it. "people only follow Elon because they love him and want his babies. They went out of their way to say they actively want to follow him because they think Elon is the best in the world. That's the only reason he has the followers he has. Not a single one is a bot. Not a single one is betters looking to see the next spike. Not a single one is journalists looking to see the next story of Elon's latest mess up. Just pure fans who adore the almighty."

The reason I deleted the x app from my phone is, that despite not following Musk ever, I was getting push notifications every morning from random posts he had made.

Stop following people that repost his tweets then?

I don't, Twitter forces the posts upon me in its for you tab. The for you tab mostly contains stuff you care about but Twitter also pumps trending posts in there including musk crap
