The Opteron Skt 939 Overclocking thread !!!!

Richdog said:
lol... uber temps, what're you using for cooling? :)

A stock FX55 cooler (with copper base and heatsinks etc though). I was going to use the cooler for the opteron, but I managed to break it trying to install it :o

I'll get a 3rd party heatsink soon so that I can RMA this FX55. Any recommendations welcomed! The zalmann 7700s look great, but I would like to use all my RAM slots...

edit - failed prime after 1 min at 3Ghz. Failed super-pi 8M too. I think a little more voltage would help, but my temps are bad enough as it is. I'll sit at 2.9Ghz until I get a new heatsink. It's possible I've just got a bad contact... I'm not taking it off to check though :p

Just got my 146 Opteron delivered today, not going to be building until tomorrow as I don't have the time, from what I can see so far it is a CABYE 0540FPBW.

Should overclock nicely on stock volts, was going to buy a San Diego 3700+ andyway so if I can get it to 2.2Ghz i'll be £££'s in anyway :D

Same chip as mine.

same as mine, easily looking at 2.8ghz+ :D
mine does 2.9ghz on stock volts (never tested stability much but passed superpi 32m) passed occt & sp2004 at 2.8ghz on stock volts :D

Is the stock AMD cooler that comes with these Opterons any good?

Stu

Not particularly. It's a relatively small aluminium heatsink, with very thick, inefficient fins. As far as heatsinks go, it's pretty poor.

That said, it will be still be fine for cooling the chip up to a good overclock.

Is anyone using one of these Opteron 144's on an Epox NF3 Ultra board (9NDA+ or 9NDA3J?)

I can't get mine to bench stable above 2500mhz atm (CAB2E 0540 FPMW) talking to Richdog think it might be the board holding me back.

Don't quote me on that though... you said you had the same problem using a divider right? 2.8v is also very low for your max memory voltage, especially using 2GB.

you're probably right about the board though :)

yeah even with the ram frequency (divider) set to 133mhz I was unable to run a stress test on 2550 or above. That was with the ram speed at 180mhz ish slack timings, 1.55V also.

my memory voltage selection is 2.6/2.7/2.8 and thats it. :(

Hmmm ... trying 300x9 (133ram divider)

2700mhz all my stress test programs flake out within 6 seconds, OCCT, Super-PI, SP2004 etc.

Could using x64 Windows have anything to do with it or is it hardware based (im 99% sure it'll be my motherboard)

Runing 1.55volts - will 1.6 volts be ok to try?

1.6 is fine. Although the board I use (MSI K8N Neo 2 Plat) undervolts - apparently - I'm having to run 1.7 to keep my 148 stable at 2.8GHz. CPU-Z says 1.648

SP2004 has been running OK for 3hrs so far :)

Ive been following this thread now I have some preliminary results to post too:

AMD Opteron
OSA146DAA5BN
CABYE 0540FPBW
From a competitor for £105inc vat

I was testing my venice with dual channel just before I got this new chip (previously running 3 dimms) and it was a little flakey, so dropped to 275fsb. I obviously need 300Mhz fsb to hit 3Ghz which is my target, so I put 2 512Mb sticks in single channel.

Now running prime @ 300fsb, x9 multi = 2700Mhz +0.1v in bios
133Mhz memory frequency divider = 200Mhz @ 3v vdimm mushkin lv2 black 23382t

I usually run 22282t, I am pretty sure that my memory doesnt like 2t (thats what u get for buying 2nd hand tbh). Im trying to rule out any instability from mobo and memory, so will test/burn in at these settings (assuming they are even stable) only been priming 15min.

Once I find my max cpu frequency that all components in my system are happy with then Ill try putting back tighter timings and dual channel.

The reason I put +0.1v vcore already is because I just read that high vdimm and low vcore isnt too clever which sounds about right with the memory controller on the cpu.

Just want to find a nice safe setting before I start tweaking it out.

@VaderDSL
I have the EP-9NPAJ SLI a similar board to yours but its a later release. As above I can prime at 300Mhz fsb single channel. In my experience dual channel makes things a lot more flakey than otherwise and is not worth the effort. It maybe my ram though.

Edit: CPU temp is 46'c running prime blend test with xp-120 heatsink 120mm ys-tech @ <5v.

Nope no luck at all - I think its my board - some settings its fine, but toher times it will not reboot and = clear cmos, like some combinations of fsb and voltages - my board does not let me use higher than 1.55v otherwise i cant get it to restart after the saving the bios settings.

all a bit strange - going to consign myself to not getting over 2500mhz

The board I have even reboots when u set settings it doesnt like, 2 long beeps then a short post beep. Only once did I have to clear cmos cause it wouldnt post. With the latest bios u get 3.2v vdimm option, although your board my be an older revision, part of the reason I chose this board over an ultra/ non ultra cause u would get the latest revision.

Vader if worst comes to the worst... wait till the 146's get in stock at one of several online stores seeing as there's a good chance they'll be CABYE 0540'2 again, and sell the CAB2E. :)
