US: The Orville

What's with all the Ep6 hate?

Thought it was ok. Actually one of the good ones. An actual episode with plot and you get to learn more about the Krill.
So what that the jokes fall flat. They fall flat in EVERY episode :D

Treat it as sci-fi, not comedy and just enjoy it.

Then why bother having them? Like the way Malloy constantly runs his mouth while in disguise, over and over. I wouldn't mind if he was being funny, but he was just being stupid. Might as well have had him blowing a horn, twirling a bow tie and falling on banana skins. This sort of thing is the structure of a Family Guy episode, and Orville should do better.

I get what you're saying. I can't magically remove the 'comedy'. I simply choose not to let it bother me any more.
So I get to enjoy a lighthearted sci-fi romp each week instead of complaining that it's not funny enough :)

You're deliberately not getting what I'm saying. I guess you'd be okay with them doing a full Hollywood song and dance routine for ten minutes in the middle of the show a la Family Guy, and then saying it didn't affect your enjoyment of the rest of the show? This is Seth MacFarlane, so I'm sure it's coming sooner or later.

It's all about thresholds. At what point does enjoyment get outweighed by poop.
I don't let bad jokes get in the way of my spaceship and alien enjoyment, because I really like spaceships and aliens, and the jokes aren't SO bad that they're offensive.

To answer your question though, I could probably let one bad dance number slide, but not a 10 minute awful dance number weekly.
Again.... what's the threshold. At what point does the terribleness make the goodness simply not worth it?

We seem to have different thresholds. Heheh.
But you know what, that's fine. Variety is the spice of life and all that :)

I am starting to enjoy this more with each episode. The jokes are hit and miss, with more miss, but worth putting up for the hits. The joke with the leg did have us genuinely laughing out loud :D

I think episode 6 was the first one we've seen that wasn't written by Seth, was still watchable/enjoyable though

I don't really understand the calls to remove the jokes, it would then just be a slightly naff Star Trek rip off - the cheap sets etc.. don't matter so much when it is a comedy show. Some of the funny bits in the last episode weren't too great granted but other stuff has been pretty good. I also liked the practical joke stuff in episode 5 from the Mr Potato head through to the leg getting cut off and then the sight of the half restored leg as he needs to hop onto the flight deck :D

I guess that sort of thing isn't necessarily going to tickle everyone's sense of humour either. I suppose even people who don't find it funny at all will still watch it as perhaps there is still an underlying desire among some to still watch a light hearted/not taking itself too seriously sci fi show - I mean firefly was very likeable and some people are really passionate about it, yet it often had pretty poor dialogue and acting at times.

Binge watched this last night, didn't think much to the first episode but by the sixth it had definitely grown on me, for sure the humour can be a bit hit or miss, especially in ep 6 on board the Krill vessel, but on the whole I'm enjoying it so far.

So, I didn't see that episode of Black Mirror, but is this Orville basically the same thing?
Not complaining or crying 'copycat', just curious.

The episode was apparently written well before dark mirror, so no copying. Must have been annoying for Seth when that ep aired. Good ep though!

the series as a whole, nope nothing like it...

that last episode though features a visit to planet reddit becomes a bit similar to a black mirror episode

The show sort of sits in the middle between Star Trek and Red Dwarf, not as funny as Red Dwarf but not as serious as TNG. The jokes are ok but i'm finding the show enjoyable so far.
