*** The OS X Lion Thread ***

I'm going back to snow leopard. 6 kernel panics now. All using different software, some just the the finder. Console logs didn't give any clue as to why. Seriously unimpressed.

Me too. Sometimes the whole system freezes while using Safari, other times while just using the Finder. Very annoying, but at least when I re-boot all my apps and documents are back in the same place. Haven't lost any work so far...

(including 15" 2011 MBP users on the descreet cards).

I just wanted to state, as somebody running a 15" 2011 MBP, i have had no problems what so ever with the Lion upgrade. Everything is running fine and i have had no incompatibility issues. Not to rub it in your face, its just there seems to be quite a lot of 'lag, groan, app doesn't work now' stuff and for the record i have not witnessed any of it :p

Oh thats fine mate, i'm happy with how mine is running now. Just wanted to make sure people realised what I was trying to say without assuming out of date hardware was to blame :p

I have read a lot of people saying no need for a clean install and everything is fine and I just had to veer the other way and i'm glad I did :)

Pages? Office 2011 for Mac? :D

She's tried pages and isn't a fan; I like it though. I had avoided Office 2008 on Mac, as heard bad things about it, and then I got Office 2011 for PC dead cheap, like £5 for the top end professional edition. Go go gadget employer facilitated discount.

Just read this on Macrumors to fix the keyboard not repeating issue:

To fix the key repeat, enter this into terminal : defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

Haven't tried it myself yet as at work

It works, just log out and log back in after.

Verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry happy now!

Just upgraded to Lion, feels a bit faster than SL. I like the new mail app, not had a chance to explore anything else yet.

its saying 11 hours to restore from time machine  and thats with a firewire 800 drive good job not in a rush.

That seems pretty slow. How much have you got on your drive? I reinstalled SL using a USB TM backup and it only took 7hrs for 280GB.

So far I've had a good experience with Lion.
Ive started using my magic mouse again as the new gestures are so easy to use, which in turn has caused me to ditch firefox ( for now ) and use safari as i don't think i can live without the forward/back page swipe.

Loving the full screen stuff and the new mail is brilliant :) and I'm liking mission control a lot, i never used to use spaces or anything like that before on SL but find its very natural now especially now i just had to 2 finger swipe to each screen or double tab 2 fingers.

Only main gripe so far is Flash seems to cause my system to completely lock up and spazz out :(

This may sound like a stupid question but if I've paid for this once am I technically allowed to install this on all the other Apple laptops/computers in our house? They don't seem to make much of a fuss about this sort of thing. When I bought Snow Leopard I installed it on quite a few machines with no issues.

Having installed Lion yesterday while first I was underwhelmed I'm starting to become in awe of the subtle polish and usability improvements.

Mission control makes a lot of sense to me on a large screen and as someone who usually has a lot of applications open; I never used spaces but feel once everyone gets used to it this is far more useful.
Launchpad I'll never use preferring the dock or spotlight for less used apps - probably on a smaller laptop it makes sense.
Stability, this far everything is fine.
The new mail is just gorgeous and threading very useful.
Ical, I'm ambivalent about the leather but otherwise it is just gorgeous and as usable as before.
Reopening last used apps is incredibly useful and will save bills by not putting my comp to sleep.
Full screen apps don't make sense on a large screen but again on laptops I'd probably use with launchpad.
