What's your PSU?
It's a few years old Corsair HX1050. It's due a replacement anyway since before today it was the loudest thing in the room.

What's your PSU?
I've swapped my 1070 back in for now and the whine has stopped. Any chance it could still be the PSU at fault if the 1080 Ti draws more power at load or something?
Roll up a bit of paper into a cone and listen around your case. If it's the psu then the noise will come from there. If it's the gpu the noise will come from the card.
Oh dear, I am not going to hold up much hope for this replacement card if both of your cards have got the whine issue. I am wondering if Nvidia cheaped out on caps for these cards?
Can you post a pic of your foam mod?
I'm not sure why you guys on water are waiting?
My understanding is that if the 1080ti is anything like the 1080 then there will not be too much difference between the custom card clocks and FE which leaves the difference between the blocks which I'm assuming will be small if anything. The cost outlay you would pay for the custom card and new EK block is not worth the incremental clocks when compared to the FE and Titan block combo
Yes its certainly a shame, one thing I hate about reference cards is the cheapout on good chokes and caps etc.
Literally just cut out and stuck some of this onto the back of the case (back of the card while its fitted into the pcie slot). On the unused ports, exhaust port and missing pcie lanes etc.
All i could find with a decent width without waiting a while. Larger width possibly a bit thicker would be better if you can get it although this stuff works well.

Custom cards are easier to sell on to someone who has no interest in water cooling.
Cranked mine up to just over 2Ghz core and 6Ghz memory, seemed to cope well, max temp just under 50 degrees. Still getting frame drops in Ghost Recon though!

I thought the same thing but my reference 980Ti sold for allot more than most custom cards, I was really surprised. I put it on at a higher price as I wasn't ready to sell but wanted to take up the £1 selling fee offer on ebay and was planning on reducing it later on when I had a 1080ti. It only went and sold, I was surprised. Mine is not the only one either.
Looking on ebay there are so many custom cards that the reference cards stand out a bit more and some people seem to go for them for some reason, maybe to watercool or to use in SLI, I am not sure. Personally if I wasn't going to run a card on air then a card with a custom cooler would be a must for me.
I've never had any issue with getting good money for reference cards, especially on ebay
True but you wouldn't pay a premium for a custom card when watercooling right?

With the tales of jet engine noise and thermal throttling, I'm not sure why anyone would want a FE on air. Maybe this Gen is particularly worse?
I've never owned an FE or blower style card and the above is why.
