****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

That's a disappointment. I was hoping it would be quieter than that, but I guess it will be a case of try before you buy.

Sound is based on a logarithmic scale, so technically -3dB would be twice as quiet.

Now, even if you go on perceived changes (-10dB) then you're quite a bit quieter :)

Nah, 70db is actually sod all, especially with the noise of a movie over the top. Iirc background noise alone (basically what we would consider silence) is 40-50db.

Yes, you are correct. A quiet room would be around 40-45dB, however 85dB is enough to damage hearing so you need to forget numbers.

I pretty much expect this to be noticably quieter

True.

I imagine they set the audio measuring equipment right next to the unit, so those measurements would also be the equivalent of putting your ear right up against the PS3 while watching a movie. At the end of the day it's quieter than the PS3 which is already pretty damn quiet.

My PS3 use tends to be quite late when the rest of the house is quiet so I can hear my PS3 clearly. Maybe cause it's a 60gb? Is there any difference in noise/power usage between the 60gb and the 40/80gb?

My PC is quieter than my PS3 but when I had the 360, unless I installed the game to the HDD, the noise was very loud. Almost like a grinding noise which was most unsettling.

Launch (90nm Cell / 90nm RSX) was 200W
40GB (65nm Cell/ 90nm RSX) was 160W
80GB (65nm Cell / 65nm RSX) was 130W

I have had the original 60gb but currently own the 40gb sku, I would definitely say that the 40gb is quieter, and I know a lot of people say that the 80gb is considerably quieter than the original 60gb.

They both look gash, but then when have Sony ever made a console that looked good?
Thankfully they arent £$%^ing household ornaments and actually play games rather well - maybe when some of you finish putting on your make up and doing your nails you'll remember that.....

What's the crack if I got a PS3 slim over here in Australia and ended up bringing it back to the UK - are the consoles region locked?

Only for DVD/Blu-Ray. All the PS3 games are region free which is a lovely touch. The only thing is that the DLC in each region's store generally requires the BD from that region. So you couldn't buy the UK Call of Duty maps and play them with a US copy of the game.

Cool thanks for the info - seems that Australia / NZ are the same region as Europe with regard to Blu-Ray...
