****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

I'm undecided as to whether or not I want one.
I always said when the price of the PS3 was £200 or less that I would get one, but I'm still a bit annoyed that the PS3 still can't play PS2 games.
Still, I'd get to finally play MGS4 and Killzone 2...

I just find the lack of ability on the 360 compared to the PS3 a right pain, no media on HDD, no BR, largest HDD is 120GB, no full HD (not a big issue really).

I was going to get a PS3 in a few months (having used my brothers for a few months whilst I lived at his), as I really quite like them and want one to go alongside the 360 and enable me to have BR etc. and PlayTV is cool, putting freeview PVR into the mix too. :)

Now this one is out I'm certainly going to get one, smaller, matte black instead of silly dust attracting piano black, and it's nice and small too. :)

Hopefully this new slim and price tag will make second hand old ps3 prices fall to around £150.
cant see many people paying much over 150 for old tech.

I don't think I'll bother swapping my PS3 for a new slim one as It doesn't get enough use to warrant spending more money. I only really use it for streaming media to my TV and playing Blu-rays on my HDTV.

I do think the new one looks better. Not a fan of the current 'spiderman' logo and think the matt finish is far more practical. Mine has a load of small scratches where it has been wiped and i used a microfiber cloth as well .

Sod all games have it, most are 720p upscaled etc. As far as I was aware, PS3 has a lot more titles in 1080p...but they can fit more stuff on BR discs than MS can on DVDs. :p

Both consoles have barely any titles that are FULL 1080p, what they've done for some first party titles is run the vertical res at 1080p but run the horizontal at a lower rest. It's still better than 720p but it results in rectangular pixels and jaggies are still there, just less noticable.

Wipeout HD however, full HD most of the time and it's lush. I say most of the time as if the screen gets busy (loads of explosions etc) it quickly lowers the resolution to make sure the framerate stays at 60fps constant. The process isn't even noticable as the switch happens for only a second or two and as previously mentioned, the screen has to be really busy for it to need it so you're going to be concentrating on things other than the resolution when it does happen.

Killzone 2 runs at full 1080i and that's noticeably better than 720p so it makes me wonder why more developers don't use that res as it seems doable.

Can you please explain to me why the **** having more disk space would make any difference to what resolution the game runs in?

That's like saying it uses more disk space to run Team Fortress 2 at 1920x1080 than it does running it at 800x600.

Stupid.

Edit: Oh and both systems have barely any games that run at native 1080P, just because your TV says it's getting a 1080P feed doesn't mean it's actually being rendered at that, loads of idiots thought that the 360 was doing 1080P games when really it was just the upscaler sending that signal.

Streeteh - That's fair enough, cheers for clearing up that both have minimal 1080p games.

Simple, more space for higher content crap...not sure if you've noticed but 1080p videos take up more space than 720p ones.

I know it doesn't mean it if the TV says it...all that means is the console is upscaling. As I said as far as I was aware there were more titles on the PS3 with 1080p content...I've been advised I'm incorrect, that's fine, no need to call me stupid though thanks.

been putting it off getting a ps3 for a while. think ill get the new slim. not fussed that its not that pretty but im happy that its more compact, uses less power and produces less heat :)

You're not wrong, there are more PS3 titles that run at 1080p, just don't be expecting anywhere near the majority :)

[EDIT] It's literally like, 4 titles on the 360 and 6 on the PS3. Obviously those numbers are probably higher but the margin between them is minuscule. At the end of the day i'd rather have games with loads of detail running at 720p than a game with very sparse and uninteresting graphics running at 1080p.

[EDIT2] There are other tasty benefits to bluray in games as you say though. I especially like the uncompressed surround sound in metal gear solid 4, dear god it sounds amazing.

What they should do is offer a no hard drive model and let people add their own then they could probably do it for a bit less even.

It's still way out of reach for your average console gamer which lets face it is probably mainly kids.

Blu ray films are a very niche market one that your average kid with a ps3 just isn't interested in.Personally I don't know anyone that actually even pays for dvd / hd/hdtv or music these days.

The average age of gamers in the UK is 28 and 51% of the 36 to 50s play games and the average goes up every year.

In the US its even older with the average age being some thing like 35 years old.

Most of us in our 20's, 30's and 40's have grown up with video games and still love to game so its not only the kids :).

As for me, I'm in my 40's and own them all, a PS3, XBox 360, Wii, DS, and PSP and still have a PS1, PS2, MegaDrive, Amiga CD32, NES etc etc and even though I tell my wife I bought them for the kids ....well you get the gist :)

This definately. So many people shake this off because they dont have the equipment to appreciate it as a feature, but that doesnt mean the feature isnt there, And the difference is immense and the sooner it's mainstream the better. Uncompressed 7.1 is to sound what 1080HD is to Vision.

Having heard uncompressed 7.1 on an expensive setup I really didn't see the fuss.

While the speakers were better than my surround sound setup it didn't make me think I was missing out by not having 7.1 uncompressed at home.

Just don't really care for the uncompressed audio, only reason I thought it sounded better was because the speakers alone cost a lot more than the setup I use at home, not once did I think it was the uncompressed audio making the difference.

I can see why people forget it's there.

Uncompressed audio is pretty noticeable on a decent system imo. I noticed a substantial difference on the lossless formats. TrueHD and DTS-HD bit-rates are about 4 times that of normal Dolby Digital and are double the sample rate so on a decent setup it's noticable. May not be as obvious to the average joe though.
