****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

It's just the flow of audio data from the PS3 to the reciever. I ain't completely in the know tbh I think PCM maps the analogue data being sent from the PS3 into a digital binary form. Bitstream is untouched and the audio is sent without any conversion and is ultimately just decoded as TrueHD and DTS-HD by the reciever. I'm assuming this is why your reciever doesn't display the HD lights for PCM as it's processing a different signal. I maybe completely wrong though can't really be arsed to read about it.

Sounds about right Nanoman - PCM processes it within the PS3 and sends it out while with Bitstream it does nothing but send off the audio for your reciever to do that processing...

ps3ud0

They could sell one without a HDD for those that just want it for movies and streaming.

They could. But you forget that a lot of people aren't clued up about technical stuff.
If they saw a PS3 that's cheaper then they'd buy it.And it'd cause loads of problems for retailers as they'd have people bringing it back saying they can't use install games on it.

I've been thinking long and hard. 60gbs I hear still go for £250 on the Bay. I may not like the look of the slim but an extra 12 months warrant and not having to worry about the ticking time bomb that's the yellow light of death may make letting my 60gb go for a Slim a wise decision. I hear the 60gbs are prone to the YLOD. =(

But dam I love the classy look of my 60gb. It's a shame Sony stop the whole continuous play thing.

Haha, yeah that seems to be a tactic that's well promoted on these forums (as well as everywhere else!).

Will they be revamping it then - or just totally killing it?

I'd imagine Continous Play will come back, but probably only offering something like 12 month periods that are paid up front (£60).

I just pre-ordered a slim 120gb for £229. Have I made a mistake?

My colleague is saying that it's the poor man's PS3 with a worse blu-ray player and lots of missing features.

I have been holding off for ages and now seems like as good a time as any?

Your colleague is actually talking out of his arse. As a bluray player it is arguably superior as it supports bitstream (better audio for high end amplifiers) and it has a bigger hard drive than the current model of PS3. The only real differences are, it's smaller, quieter, uses less electricity and the only negative difference is that you can't install Linux on it like you can with the older model. Unless you want to install Linux on it i see nothing wrong with the slim.

The only model that has real advantages over it is the long discontinued 60gb model which had PS2 backward compatibility, data card readers and 2 extra USB ports. But as i say it's discontinued so you'd need to buy a second hand model without a warranty.

I don't need linux, or card readers.

Just want blu ray, games and some form of storage. It's still compatible with play TV right? Is Play TV worth getting?
