****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

Sorry if this has been asked/answered already, but if I "upgrade" to a Slim, is there an easy method of transferring my saves from my current PS3? Also, all of my downloaded games/content - what do I do with that? Login on my PSN account and download everything again? Has anyone done all of this yet with minimal hassle?

Thanks mate, thought it did but wanted to make sure now they are in the wild they actually have this feature.

I will miss my 2 extra usb ports but don't have to keep dusting the console now :p Never used the backwards compatability...kept almost buying GoW1/2 as only played chains of olympus on the PSP but they are being released on Blu-Ray and GT5 is almost out now so no need for PS2 games anymore.

There's a backup option in the menu of the PS3 which will save everything to a USB hard drive that is formatted to FAT32. There's more to it than that but lots of people have been doing it and discussing it in this thread so read back a little for more info. In short, pretty much everything you want to do is possible.

System Settings > Backup Utility > Backup

This requires a USB hard drive (formatted to FAT32) with enough free space.

You also want to deactivate your console, if you're selling/trading to prevent the next owner from downloading your content. Do this under the Account Management settings on the XMB.

When you get the next PS3 just go..

System Settings > Backup Utility > Restore

You could always re-download your purchases from PSN (for free) and backup the saves manually on USB stick although some saves are copy-protected. e.g. Street Fighter 4 and Killzone 2.

Info on how to use it:

Playstation UK said:
PC Update - Visit eu.playstation.com for the very latest version of the update data. Follow the on-screen instructions to download to your PC.

To transfer the update data to your PLAYSTATION 3, save the file to a PS3 compatible storage device such as Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, USB drive or PSP.

Before starting, use your PC to create a folder named 'PS3' on the storage media or USB device. Within the folder, create a folder named 'UPDATE' (This folder name is case sensitive and must appear in all capital letters). Once the UPDATE folder has been created, download the PS3 system software update to this location.

Once the update data has been saved, disconnect the storage device and connect it to your PS3 via the slots under the slot cover or the USB connectors depending on the device you're using.

Once connected, navigate to Settings on the PS3 Home Menu, select [System Update] and then [Update via Storage Media]. Select the connected device and your PS3 will install the update data stored there.
You have to download firmware 3.0 from the website, copy it to a USB key or drive - specifically in a file/folder hierarchy of PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP

Then shove the key into your PS3 USB port and hold START+SELECT together.

Thanks guys! And one more (probably answered) question:

How much are the highstreet stores offering on PS3 Fat trade-ins? i.e., how much would I have to pay, CASH, for a Slim today?

We can't say names (against the forum rules).

If you ring around most high street shops are matching trade-in prices. Most users here have found a place which is offering £198 for a 60GB fat, so they're playing the high street retailers against each other.

Have a read of the thread for more info..

Cheers matey, will do! £198 seems pretty reasonable!

Can anyone confirm this:

Just tried it with the supplied HD (already on FW3.00) and it didnt do anything when I booted up either with or without the USB cable connecting the DS3...

CBA to swap drives and then find out that I cant install FW3.00 as I dont know how to activate the update during boot...

Cancel or get a refund and just buy it elsewhere? :)

I rang a few 'video stores' (from the same chain) and they all said that were selling them today so I went back down there and had a moan, the guy then said I could have it but it hadn't been booked into the system yet so I'll have to wait until tomorrow, complete mickey mouse out fit my local store, anyway I don't mind waiting a day I suppose, he told me that I get 'Batman Arkham Asylum' with it for free so that cheered me as I actually wanted that game.

I'm going to have to hold my hands up and say I haven't read through the whole 53 pages.
However on many of the pages I have read I'm seeing people "upgrading" from their PS3 to the new Slim.

Can I ask why?
Maybe it is really obvious and I've missed something in the specification on the Slim.
Apart from it being smaller, using less power and being slightly quieter - what other "killer" features have they added to the Slim to warrant spending even £50 on an "upgrade"?

Can I ask why?

Some have done it as it has 'bitstream' (a type of HD audio supported by most modern amps)

Some have done it because they prefer the way it looks

Some have done it for the reasons you stated

Nearly all of them have done it as it's likely to be more reliable and they get an extra years warranty (cheaper than the £100+ Sony demand for a repair).

Took some quick pictures just a moment ago. Sorry not the best qaulity.

Sorry to be nitpicky, but is it really a good idea to have a surround speaker resting on the PS3? I've read that speaker magnets can mess up other electronics but even if it doesn't do that it'll mess with the heat dissipation surely?

Thats really strange but I was thinking that today. It used to sit on my xbox and I had no problems with that. Thx for the advice :)
