The Police Application Thread

Does nayone know what type of shift patterns you get as a PSCO? Do they work late like the Police? I've heard you do 4 days in then 4 off, not sure how true that is, anyone in the know? Thanks.

You either work an early or a late. An early being 7-4 and a late being 1-10. Your shifts can range from working 6 days and getting 3 rest days to working 3 and getting another 3. It's based on a 10 week shift pattern. 4 days on, 4 days off is the fire service, and they work 24 hours, I believe :).

This is only based on what they do at Leicestershire however and could differ from other forces!

Just had my medical, seemed to go well. The booth they put you in for the hearing was a pain! The noises were so quiet and every bang you could hear even when sat in it! She said I need to drink more water as my wee looked "cloudy" :D I was like "erm..well I had one glass today" haha. She took loads of my hair, I'll be bald soon! Just got to the see the doc next week and it's all over. :)

ooo they did a hair sample? That's a new one. Never did such a thing for me! They'd use that to test for drugs...

Sounds as though it went well any ways, the end is nearly in sight for you. Hopefully your waiting times aren't anything like they are for a full constable, as by the time the next recruitment comes around I'd have been fully passed and waiting for a place for nearly a year! (10 months~)

I doubt PCSOs would work 4 on and 4 off. Those shift patterns are usually 12 hours and the forces that use them usually have their 24/7 response on them. PCSOs usually work day shifts and back shifts of 8 hours or so.

They are usually reserved for 24/7 shifts although while they seem popular with the troops, senior managers don't seem to be a fan of them.

I applied in Nov 2007, had my assessment last Nov (2008) here I am in 2009 still waiting, although my letter says they are looking to start me in March and I will get priority before if things come up in meantime. One thing that did concern me and I was not made aware of is my recent medical letter states "Please be aware you will be on a 12 month fixed term contract in this instance and we may not continue employment after the 12 months" which has miffed me a bit as they could just let me go after 12 months, didn't realise this was the case for PCSO's? They said they have never let anyone go in the past and have always kept them on, it's still a risk though. Anyone know anything about this?

It is basically a probationary period.

I had to do 2 years as a probationer when I joined as does every new recruit and you can be dismissed at any time during that period if you aren't up to standard or get into trouble etc.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks, however when I asked if that was why they said "No it's not your probation" ?? Makes no sense, unless they are not allowed to say that?

Just thought I'd update you all on my progress. I finished the last training session last weekend, and I'm just waiting for attestation now next Wednesday :D.

I still don't know if I've passed vetting :(

That seems to take ages. I had to get vetted for my job in the police (staff not officer) and it took an age to come back to me. They also had to do 2 different vetting checks on me and then lost my second lot of forms as well . In fact the enhanced vetting still isn't finished as far as I know.

I'm always surprised how many of the new recruit officers seem to resign so quickly. These people take years to get in, get spots over other people and then quit after a few months of work!

Hi again guys!

After a long couple of months i received a letter from West-Mids Police. I Was accepted :D!

Now i have to attend a assessment centre on the 4th of this month, thats this Wednesday, so my question is, What advice could you guys give me? Ive been looking through my books and such, but any advice would be brilliant!

Thanks in advance.
