The Police Application Thread

Just had my letter back through from West Mercia.. passed the Application, onto the testing stage.. time to get revising!

It's so frustrating, it's something I've always wanted, but throughout the 18 month process I went through before, I did have stages of not being sure if it was right for me.

This is where I would highly recommend the specials... I wasn't sure if it was right for me, joined the specials, and whilst it was interesting and a fantastic experience to do every so often and picking when, I soon realised it would not suit me as a day job.

That's pretty much my thoughts. I am wondering if it'd be better than IT though.

Currently thinking of throwing in an ap for a position as a special, can anyone give me any idea what the fitness test involves? i know i will have to shift a ton of weight first and generally improve my fitness. But i have previously had to have the cruciates in one knee reconstructed and a large part of the cartilage removed so am wondering if this will have any bearing? Also i have read somewhere that there is a test that involves an English test that is pretty strict on grammar/punctuation? is this true and just how strict are they on the latter?

Thnx

I meant to reply to this when you posted it but I've not had the time.

The fitness test involves a push pull test of 35kg and a 10 metre beep test of level 5.4. Most forces also have a BMI requirement of under 30. Your knee surgery will be taken in to account by occupation health but won't necessarily rule you out.

As part of the initial recruitment process there is a test on writing both spelling grammar and handwriting. You need a reasonably high standard to pass. There is also a mental maths test.

Hold up. That must depend on the force I would suggest given that Scottish forces work with the ACPOS set targets which are:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Push/Pull:

Male - 69KG
Female - 39KG

15m Bleep Test

Age......<29.....30-39....40-49.....50-59
Male......9.2.....8.8.........8.2.......6.10
Female...7.3.....6.7.........6.1.......5.2

1.5 Mile in mins

Age.......<29....30-39....40-49.....50-59
Male.......12.....12.5.......13.........14.5
Female....14......15.........16..........18

If the English forces are using 35KG and 5.4 on a 10 metre bleep then that's pretty bad. Christ even the women's tests in Scotland are harder than the men's down South

I get that the poster is probably joining an English force. I was just putting this up here as I am shocked how low the fitness levels need to be for forces down South.

Thnx both^^ the push/pull won't be an issue. (used to unload lorry loads of cement by hand and be able to lift engines out of cars...) As I said I have a load of weight to shift, so will work on my running as a part of this (barely even run for a bus in 20 years..) the main thing I will have to work on by the looks of it will be my writing/grammar ect. My handwriting has always been terrible as has my grammar. The maths is another non issue as long as they don't ask me about anything relating to trigonometry.

Fitness tests have been downgraded massively lately. 5.2 as a pass is a joke.

It was 9.0 when I joined, you had to pass that several times during your probation and public order medic qualification says you have to reach 10.2.

Just to correct myself, it's 5.4 on a 15m course. Not that it actually makes any difference. I really do need to sort my fitness out, I need to level up of Fitocracy :p

ACPO could take a leaf out of ACPOS book in this regard as, from what I have been informed and looked up online, the fitness requirement of Scottish recruits is far higher than English forces (see my post about 8 posts up from here).

How can a thief-catcher catch a thief if they can't run :p

Nice work. Looking at getting my application into Cheshire Constab. (Specials) in October as that's 6 months from my rejection from Merseyside Police.

Really not looking forward to the fitness. I've gotta drop at least 1.5st to have any hope of meeting the BMI. I've starting jogging nightly when I finish work and gonna start Gymming it properly.
