The Police Application Thread

The only thing putting me off joining is doing it near where I live. Don't like the sound of that.

I don't drive so would have to go very local.

Dunno about your area, but in Northumberland Police your not allowed to cover the town you live in.

Seriously, for those not already in I'd struggle to recommend it as a career now. Read up on Winsor 1 and 2 if you're not already aware. The job's ****ed.

My mate joined the police a few month back. He's now a power tripped *&^%, and rarely even speaks to us nowadays.

There are muppets in every walk of life, and the police recruit from the local community. If he's bad at his job he'll either have to shape up or he'll get binned. Policing hinges on good communication - if he can't talk to people he's got no chance. The probation period is two years.

I'd suggest either he was a nob before he joined, you just didn't notice it, or he believes there's a reason he needs to distance himself from you, rightly or wrongly.

No doubt the job changes people, but not overnight.

I think the selection for the met is completely random as when I left school some of us knuckled down and got trades, went to college then uni etc and some of us or rather one of us went from dead end job to dead end job (McDonalds, Game Station, Cash Converters then Sony Center) then decided to send an application for the met and got accepted?! To be fair he's still a really good mate, but I still find it unbelievable how he got in especially as I know a couple of ex forces who applied and didn't even get a first interview yet some how being a lazy bones and doing nothing with your life from school can get you in

Edit: I forgot to add he's been in 3 years now and absolutely hates it! Apparently the shifts are horrid so he's thinking of transferring down here or leaving and going to college to become a vet lool!

My shift pattern on response is 6 on 4 off. The 6 on being a mixture of different hours. It used to be 12 hours but was changed, the excuse being to suit the beloved olympics.

After the olympics comes a version of Operation Hannah where response teams will be stripped to bare minimum and will answer only 999 and priority calls. The other calls will be answered by the neighbourhood teams.

My advice would be if you're hell bent on joining, don't join for response policing. The morale is horrible at the moment due to poor management and government cuts. Many people are thinking about leaving response, or just simply handing in their warrant card.

The wheels on the wagon are slowly starting to wobble, it won't be long till they fall off.

You can join regardless of your educational history. As long as you "tick the boxes" on the application form and in the assessments you'll do fine.

Response here is 6 on 4 off too. 2 days, 2 lates, 2 nights. I know what you mean by moral, the shenanigans about pursuit driving hasn't helped either.

Blimey, enough negativity people!

For those of us who still want to join, despite all the ****, things do seem to be looking up. A few forces are starting to wake up with recruitment. I believe Cheshire were recruiting this morning, and I attended a recruitment event with GMP this afternoon.

I've just left my IT job as my idea of a career is not sitting in front of a computer most days. Might apply for Northumbria if they ever open up recruitment again.

Have you read the Winsor reports?

VS - what's the current standing with Winsor?

Has part 1 been implemented yet?
Any dates for arbitration of part 2 yet?

Certain recommendations of part 1 have been implemented. As of April 1st, police pension contributions rise from 11-12.25%. SPP is also abolished and will be paid from Jan 1st-March 31st and no more after that. As it stands, I am about a grand off a year as a result. One sweetener is that all hours worked between 8pm and 6am attract a 10% unsociable hours payment. If a rest day was cancelled with less than 5 days notice you would be paid at double time but that has gone also. Where Bank holidays were paid at double time, they are now not and an officer chooses 7 ( I think ) days that are nominated as similar holidays but I don't know what rate they are paid at.

I don't know of any dates for arbitration for part II but one recommendation is for the law to be amended so that police can be made redundant with no sign of industrial rights to go with it. I said that I didn't think the Tories could shaft the police as Labour did but I was quite wrong. There is a march on May 10th in London with thousands of police officers protesting against the attack of pay and conditions. 26,000 marched last time in 2008 when Jacqui Smith wanted to shaft the police but those recommendations paled into insignificance compared to Winsor.

The bit about Bank Holidays is almost right.

At present Police Officers are paid double time for working on a Bank Holiday.

One of the problems occurs when you get Bank Holidays dropping on a weekend and the following Monday and sometimes the Tuesday becoming Bank Holidays, these too become eligible for double time. Add in a few additional Bank Holidays such as the Queens Diamond Jubilee and the cost starts rising.

Now bear in mind these terms were negotiated with the full consent of Parliament, so don't go blaming Police Officers for so called 'Spanish Practices'.

Now this is where it gets interesting. The Government want Police Officers to 'pick' 7 days that will be classified as Bank Holidays - they hope that we will spread them around the year, such as our Birthdays, Wedding Anniversary, Childs Birthday etc.

By doing this they'll probably ensure that each of us is always off on these 'Bank' Holidays, since they really don't affect the staffing levels as badly as say Easter Monday, or Christmas Day and the abstractions on the 'picked' Bank Holidays can be managed since not every Police Officer will pick the same days.

If they can avoid having a Police Officer working on their 'picked' Bank Holiday they will not have to pay double time - because the rate of pay STILL remains as Double time on a Bank Holiday - Genius really.

I'm not really sure how they will manage the 'picked' days, because you can be sure as hell if I have a choice I will be picking the major Bank Holidays such as Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day etc and I hope all 100,000 plus Police Officers do the same.
