The Police Application Thread

Passed my interview after contacting hR.
Glad I did as they forwarded me an email from vetting team which was supposed to have been sent weeks earlier...so ontop of not being informed about passing interview they forget to contact me to advance my application.

I attended a vetting interview today (financial)
I wasn't great with money as a teen, also shortly after leaving army I started showing symptoms of ptsd.
Eventually went off the.rails and lost job and ended up becoming homeless. Had a car on finance and around a grand on my overdraft at the time which I failed to keep ontop off.

Had all this down on form but not reasons why.
Didn't say it was an excuse just let them know circumstances.
Seemed pretty down to earth.
They said they'd make decision asap to keep me from waiting and will contact hR shortly.

Would be gutted to have got this far and get turned down.

Ok so i found out today i passed financial vetting. I phoned last week there was no update, called today and apparently hr were going to phone me this afternoon...yea right.

So i have a conditional offer however this is based on references.
They want the most recent one's obviously but they have all been temporary zero hour labouring type jobs.

I would have liked to have used army references and character references so little worried about this.

Also just looking at all the forms again, it gives me info on salary and also mentions you are entitled to allowances.

Can anyone give details? Wasn't sure if it was an appropriate question at interview.

Bit of a thread revival here, but having missed out on a place in the Met in 2009 due to budget cuts (I had passed everything and was waiting for a start date), I again applied for Kent Police about three months ago. However I rushed the application form and I ended up getting rejected, I couldn't believe it.

I plan to apply again in three months time when the 6 month 'ban' is up (it's not a ban, I just can't think of another word).

I know that one of the questions on the application form is 'what have you done since your last application to better prepare yourself for the role?' - does anyone have any advice on what I can do in the next three months to improve my chances here? Does this question actually have much weighting?

I've considered the MOD Police, but having done some reasearch it seems like a mixed bag, with poor management and sometimes mundane work. I'll probably just apply for Kent Police again.

I wish I hadn't rushed the last application, I know I can do this as I got through it all when I applied for the Met, I just need to take more time next time I guess.

Only anecdotal but strangely enough was talking to a colleague while on break at work on Friday who'd recently left the MOD police and they were very very negative about it complaining of bullying and poor management but that is just their side of the story and they are too new for me to know whether the problem was them or the MOD.

I know there were a few Hampshire officers that transferred to MOD Plod. You have the ability to specialise which is nice, but most HO forces won't accept transferees from MOD - although that might be different if you have experience in a HO force.

Hampshire are recruiting internally at the moment and it's hugely competitive. I know someone who has had her application reviewed by at least 3 other officers who are very adept at these sorts of questions and she's a PCSO. I think for the 20 or so places they've advertised they may get 200-300 internal applications.

When you look at how many people externally apply for each place you realise it really does need to be tip top to pass the paper sift.

Do you officers not feel a bit hypocritical with regard to what's the going on in places like Iraq?

WUT?

Thinking about applying for an internal vacancy.
Currently work as a controller, there's a vacancy for a hr advisor available to current staff. Not sure if it's available to external applicanuts too.

I have no experience in this line of work but I reckon I can relate my skills and experience to match.

Here's a slightly amusing anecdote.

When I was 16, I was pulled over on a 50cc moped somewhat late at night. After verifying that I hadn't stolen it (lol), I was given a dressing down by one of the officers.

He told me that I was recklessly endangering other road users' lives.

"How?" you might ask. By not having a front L plate. Think about that.

I had a rear L plate as it was easy to attach one to the number plate. A rear L plate tells traffic overtaking to give me a wide berth, as I might not have great control over the bike.

Who is a front L plate visible to? Oncoming traffic.

I still laugh about it to this day. On a 50cc moped, I was endangering other road users not having a front L plate.

And I'm afraid incidents like that are why I don't automatically respect the police. I'm sure most of them are decent people doing a hard job to the best of their ability.

But as with anywhere you get ***holes and jobsworths.

Obviously wasn't a very good officer you got there. I'd of seized your moped and ticketed you. ;)

Turns out that Teresa May visiting my station wasn't an April fools...

I made a speedy exit to a jab before she arrived. I don't really do hob nobbing with politicians, especially a Home Secretary like Ms May.

It is more amusing when they're shown around by someone who doesn't give a **** about them.

Someone I served with in the army was showing a previous cabinet minister around while on tour, they were by the kitchens:

'Do you drink tea Sir?'

'Oh yes I'd love a cuppa'

'Well the kettle is through there though if you're making one for yourself then the rule is you offer the rest of the lads one too.' :D

the minister gave an awkward laugh and decided not to have a cup of tea.

Hehe I read "appreciation" first of all as well. Was quite happy to see an appreciation thread so long. I think they get too much bad press personally.

Because being a ~lad~ with a nice story to tell is all well and good, except he missed the opportunity to engage with the powers that be. It's possible it would have made no difference, or a negligible one, but that's not necessarily true... it could have made a real difference, humanising an issue without it being brought up in a super staged meet and greet with people who'd been told what to say. I personally think it's pathetic when people make a stupid point so they have a 'funny' story to tell, rather than trying - it's like the gimps who make a big deal out of the fact they spoil their ballots, as though that's a big political statement, instead of trying to actually make a difference (when in reality they probably didn't leave their parents' basement on polling day, and instead carried on playing WOW and being a keyboard warrior).

you realise that interaction lasted a few seconds, he was showing the minister around they didn't simply stop talking because of a silly line about some tea... no missed opportunity for anything - he spoke to plenty of people including the guy who was picked to show him around and happened to not kiss his arse

Yeah that's a fair point. I have my answers from my Met application still (only found them after my Kent police one was sent in), so I may re-use some of those next time around as they obviously worked then.

I think I'll avoid the MOD and stick with Kent when I do apply.

Hahahahha, what?
