The lens has no effect on picture noise.

Not in your control but it's a shame the light is behind the Robin.
However, had you used spot or partial metering then the exposure would have been better.

thanks for the advice mate. i know.. if i went the other side of the robin, i would have had to go down hill, and wouldnt have been on the same level as it. it did sit there patiently for 5 minutes while i took a few snaps though! :D

so what does metering actually do?

I took this today, still can't decide if I like it or not, would probably look better if the horizon was higher. I've tried cropping, both aspect kept and not, wasn’t happy with either.

Wanted to take a lot more pics but after shot 5 may battery died (wasn't prepared so no charging beforehand or taking the AA holder for battery grip) :(

I have been inspired by many of the photos in here to finally post one or two of my own.

That last one I was trying to capture that feeling of a B road drive on a cold Sunday morning.

Don't have a great camera, using a Samsung NV3. Comments welcome? :?

:)

Metering determines the exposure i.e. The shutter speed and aperture.

Whenever the scene is strongly backlit then using a partial or spot metering setting ensures the darker centre part of your subject is correctly exposed.

Using fill flash would have also worked.

Shot this today, randomly. Dont know why I like it as its terrible really, but I like the 'moody' look it gives! Literally no adjustment, just a small crop, resize and sharpen. There were no colours to be seen anywhere so saved it as a B&W.
