I think the ones you've posted work just fine really as they fit with the theme you initially mentioned, nor.

Obviously these things are always a bit subjective so it's really down to the image you have in your mind off the end result I'd say :-)

I'm getting into video at the moment and while both have different approaches, they still follow the same format of that makes sense!

Hi Raymond..

These pictures are of my sons girlfriend.... I have a "Huge" family... and we have so many friends of the family. I also have friends who are stage actors, opera singers etc.. We are never short of people to take pictures of.. and we are very lucky to have so many attractive females in the family who have attractive friends etc...

You know those studio light nozzles you can get to direct light? You can get them in difference end shapes and sizes, honeycomb ones create a rather neat effect!

Its actually a very simple technique... for this I use a small lightsourse.. in my case a "dedolight" Continuous... I place the light very close to the subject so the light falls off is quickly. I shape for Butterfly or Rembrandt light and use the barn doors to "flag" the light.. then its a case of instructing your model to catch the light that will give them the most pleasing look aesthetically.

As I have mentioned.. I'm not a photographer, and in terms of working with models for a stills shoot is something I am still learning. I know and understand the technical side of photography and I also understand how light works (using a light meter helped massively in this regard.) I have managed to get decent results by using simple techniques. My motivation is film Noir as I have a couple of video projects where this light will be effective.... if you look back at pictures of models from the thirties forties and fifties...the photographers used single lights.. often using butterfly lighting.. fantastic results can be achieved by simply applying the inverse square law, and positioning a single light source.

Zack Arias is a proponent of single light shooting.. and he has produced some amazing images.

I must add that I think the crucial ingredient; is not to lose sight of posing your model. If you look at magazines, and on the net for head and shoulder or full body shots, you will see plenty of examples that you can use to postion your model and make him/her look great... instructing your model to move around the light and position themselves will allow you to find very quickly what's going work.

Asking them to use their hands and position them in certain ways will make them arch and lean and very soon your compositions just start to come together... its the same for video, getting your talent comfortable is the most intrinsic and fundamental part of having a good shoot... if they trust you and you make they feel pretty and beautiful, even when the shot that is in the viewfinder isn't the one you want.. say it anyway and you will have that shot sooner rather than never!..

Sorry, I do go on!! :)

It was hard work to get this mutt to stay still for...but the lure of a peanut butter sandwich just about did the trick!

Who is this girl !!!?

It's very nice again but a couple of things.

1 - the top of her head is cut off slightly here
2 - and the pose, putting a woman's hat on, makes her look fat. May be it is the wide shoulders?

I love to get a chance to shoot at her studio/living room though !

I compose my shots like that, I like to cut the head slightly off at the top when I feel the mood is right... that is completely intentional and just a preference of mine I suppose.

Ella is not interested in modelling, she just liked having a little fun with it while I was working on some projects...

Are you finding it difficult to get models to work with?...Use facebook, ask a pretty friend first and take some great shots, then have her post her pics online and ask her friends if they would like some pictures made, build your portfolio and bingo!! :)
