Working to soften and shape light...

I really love this photo!

Some very nice shots ScottFree. The only thing that bothers me is that they're very tightly cropped, cutting off the tops of the head/hats etc. Think they need a little more headroom.

Wiki's explanation is scientific based on the rule of thirds...that's cool and will get a photographer started in the wheel house of producing better looking images. However, it's not a rule that should always be adhered to.... its like saying that you should always use a wide angled lens on a landscape, its a good place to start but how about creating a different image altogether and use a telephoto... shoot a landscape at 200mm and see the difference in the compression of the image... it can create an interesting look.

Check out Peter Hurley, he has DVD's called the Art of the Headshot.. in fact, Google his name and click the image tab.... cutting off the head is not a compositional no no, in fact the vast majority of professional head - head shoulder portrait shooters will crop tight, fill the frame with the interesting parts of the image.

I understand if its not your preference, you are entitled to that opinion. I'm just explaining to you that the wiki guide to headshots is just a fundamental and basic example and should be ignored if you feel it necessary...

In shot one. I decided to crop the head, in shot two.. I have left some headroom, its purely an artistic choice...

As a self-learning photography hobbyist, I have to agree with ScottFree on this one, his cropping is drawing my focus to the ladies eyes and not the bobble hat.
I frequently crop my photos (landscape & my son's portraits) to what I think suite the picture and not to the rule of thirds. My old art teacher (many many years ago) used to tell me when i draw, to concentrate my focus on an area , so that I could draw a viewer's attention to it. Everything else is peripheral.

Decided to rework an old pic because it was one I had taken before I started cropping images to straighten them but then I started playing with it.

I ended up brushing the area around the cat and just lowering the exposure a little which ended up making a sort of glowy halo around the cat which I found amusing :D

Really pleased with how it has turned out! Just enjoy using it an awful lot.
