This is a good guide.

If you are unsure about blowing out whites, you can press J in lightroom and it indicates areas which are blown out. Also you can look at the histogram and work out what's going on.

No, J shows clipping. I use it all the time, I should know. Alt on it's own does nothing.

Just been out to have a bit of a practice at a night shot near home only to get home and it's blurry!

The Grand Olympia is a truly beautiful venue, marble flooring everywhere and fantastic warm lighting and atmosphere. I've not seen anything like it in the UK.
