The RAC have lost my car.

The idea of one "lost in the system" is entirely reasonable to me

Conceivable yes, reasonable? Hell no. This is not some old lady misplacing their knitting needles. The RAC takes a lot of money from their customers, they should be using that money to provide the service they promised. If a mistake is made they should be doing everything in their power to correct the mistake and compensate the affected customer as soon as they were made aware of the error, not just fobbing them off with excuses for more than a week.

Even if OP eventually gets his car back I would recommend he still proceed with a court case to compensate him for time wasted calling them and for any loss of income or costs incurred through not having access to that vehicle. At the very least the RAC should have provided a courtesy car to the OP immediately upon being made aware that his vehicle was not returned to him. "Reasonable" is quite the opposite of the word I would use to describe the RACs conduct here.

Right, no callback. Here we go.

FWIW i have used greenflag the last few years and they have been excellent (and yes I have usde their breakdown recovery). I was considering switching this year as I can get RAC deal through a work body discount, but maybe I'll stay with Greenflag now.

We broke down on M25, got towed home. Then separate tow to a garage a few days later. After dropping us at home the driver was picking up another car and taking it all the way to Truro. We asked if he was going part way and he said "nope, not how we work, we go full distance" He was rather happy as he knew the overtime and overnight stay would make him a nice packet (and he had nothing on the next day). Greenflag use franchises so ymmv depending on which company and location they call on, but in this case that lady got a tow all the way door-to-door.

Surely because its whereabouts are nt known, it's effectively lost/stolen, so should be reported to the police. You can then give RAC the crime number which then kick up a fuss and suddenly your car materialises.

 This is unbelievable.

Only a month ago I paid to renew my 12 month membership. Both times I've needed roadside assistance the service has been spot on. Hope you get this resolved asap. Idk if I have buyers remorse renewing now.

Start Rescue > RAC/AA etc etc. Cheaper for a full package, and you may well get an RAC guy or Green Flag etc come out to sort you out /if/ you break down anyway lol.

I've reported it stolen with Devon and Cornwall police and started a claim with Direct Line.
Knowing the police with this, you'll get the car back, notify the police to remove the report.
Then you'll get spike stripped and boxed by 3 police cars on your local A road..... what for? Operating a stolen vehicle.

It will be sat in a car storage facility/impound type place somewhere waiting for someone to pay money to someone. Probably from RAC to whoever they sub contracted step 5 in their 55 step process to recovering your car to. I'm sure with a kick up the bum they will "find" it. If not, it will turn up in a few weeks when someone does an audit of vehicles at the place it's stored at.

Not sure if it is what you are referring to but there was a car YouTuber who got this treatment, police helicopter and everything and because of a minor delay in the computer systems syncing up spent a few hours detained.

I saw a police interceptors program or Motorway police (one of those ones anyway) where a guy got stopped as the plate flagged their ANPR system. It was quite funny. Basically he lost his car when he forgot where he parked it after a night out. Then reported it stolen. Then he found it and they had not removed the trace yet. :)

Jaybee, yeah I saw that one and is what I am referencing to. As someone with family in the police force, they have spoke to me about this happening a number of times.
My comment was in jest, with a slight underlying hope of it not coming true in that case.
Same time, it would be slightly funny for us, pure rage inducing for OP, so I hope this does not happen to you.
