The Radeon RX 6900/6950 XT Owners Thread.

I'll try a few of your suggestions guys, thank you. I ran a stress test in Adrenalin and it ran for 10 minutes with no coil whine. However, it does have coil whine in-game, and it's a bit quieter now.

Cards sometimes need time to break in, also remember this all these new high end cards whine even the 30 series, even when some say they don't they do at very high frame rates and certain conditions. All the power delivery is under a lot more stress than generations before and results in some form of whine under certain conditions.

Enjoy your card and give it time to settle and I'm not sure what you are classing as loud enough whine to make you notice it as some people stick their heads in the case and wonder why they hear electrical noises coming from components   all components resonate to a point and just depends on the frequency that disturbs you.

You guys see this? I haven’t tried it yet but looks interesting.

Rx-tuner in project hydra already works well.
But this is an upgrade on that. I used rx-tuner on my 6800xt, and it uses less voltage than the AMD settings with a higher clock.
Just takes ages. Has about 40 steps to complete at different voltages and GPU load to find the best clocks per voltage.
Can't wait to test the new version when it's released.

Just a quick question. I have been playing control and turned on the AMD overlay to get an actual view of the gains on the 6950xt ref. Much higher fps. However, is it normal to get the GPU junction temp at over 90 degrees and sometimes near 100? No expert here so advice be very welcomed

Absolutely normal if you're stressing the card properly. I was playing the MW2 Beta this evening at 4K with an uncapped frame rate and the max it hit was GPU Temp: 79c GPU Hot Spot: 97c. The fan speed only hit a max of 1925 RPM during this so essentially it was a really quiet gaming experience. So don't worry about those temps at all :)

Although I will say having installed the latest drivers (for the beta) I was encountering a lot of Chrome crashes. Solution for now seems to be to disable hardware acceleration. Just a heads up if anyone else has encountered similar.

Stock settings: My 1st card, the hotspot temp would sit around 110C during each run of Heaven, Time Spy and Port Royal. After RMA'ing it, the 2nd card's hotspot temp sits around 95C.

Now I have applied a small OC and UV, the hotspot temp tops out at 90C. The performance is similar to stock settings or slightly better.

It sounds a bit like a squealing pig! I capped various games at the display refresh rate (240 Hz), and it's improved considerably. There are weird moments when seeing loading menus in PUBG that it starts to squeal loudly. Hopefully, it settles; I've done a few extended burn-in sessions.

Pretty much every graphics card I've owned will squeal in menus when FPS are in the high hundreds/thousands tbh.

Major774 and jrodka2k5 thank you. might just be a bit of ignorance on my behalf as never really paid attention to temps on old card. only ever monitored the FPS, CPU uti and GPU Uti. It is nice to no longer being bottlenecked by the GPU. The CPU is causing a very minor minor one but nothing worth spending money on upgrading (this will depend on AMD Zen 4 is like and the usage of SAM - will never base a decision on marketing talk in the press releases) but nothing wrong with my current cpu. In Control I had everything maxed out at 1440p with full ray tracing on. Was getting 50 to 60fps. Which to me is very playable. The Ray Tracing did look good but it was not a game changer to me personally. It was more of "oh that looks nice" kind of experience and then didnt really pay attention to it when actually playing so did turn it off and got the FPS up again. I am sure this may change in the future as more games use it, it becomes better utilised and tech gets better etc. It is quite amazing what is possible tho compared to when I last bought a graphics card.

I have tried to google the next question but could not find an answer. On the ADM Adrenaline thing on the Radeon Super Resolution if I click enable it gives option for percentage. What percentage is recommended if any? Also how do you go about actually using RSR or FSR if applicable in a game? I dont see a need to use it but it would be nice to know just to try it out.

My next bit of research will be on a 4k gaming monitor. Not sure if I should get a 60hz or higher one. Either way I will need to save up for a bit.

So I can't answer in respect of Super Resolution as I haven't touched it.

I can talk about 4k monitors however. I would certainly consider a higher refresh rate than 60hz if you do go for one. I have a 144hz Philips Momentum monitor (expensive due to Ambiglow) and in the games I play the 6950XT more than hits that limit. For example these are the following avg FPS for a few games I play.

Apex Legends: 130.6
PUBG: 130.0
Cyberpunk 2077: 86.7 (FSR Quality applied I believe but all settings at the highest, RT disabled)
Warzone: 115.6 (Should be higher but had an FPS cap in the lobby, some lows etc to keep the FPS high in game)
MW2 Beta: 92.3 (I've kept everything at the highest during the beta)

So when you consider the above the 6950 is more than capable of sustaining higher than 60fps in premium games. Of course freesync makes for a super smooth experience so it can be a great package.

Menus with no fps cap will always cause cards to whine, especially older games that never had cards like this available at the time and badly coded new games that as we have seen in the past even damaged cards because they allowed the fps to go threw the roof on menus.

Stick a video up of how loud the card is getting, but make sure to try if on some new demanding games too, as demanding games will not be making the card whine due to the super high frame rates not being hit.

thank you for this. i might need to do some googling on FSR etc . screen wise ill do some more research and look at appropriate forum. card is fantastic otherwise. massive upgrade. some of the games I had played on my 970 I have gone back to and they look so much better and frame rates are seriously improved. some games i see little difference (but there are more indie type games or monkey island so wasnt really expecting a world changer there). but its nice now to be able to play more modern game. i am sure when AMD announce new cards there may be a slight "should have waited " mood. but tbh you get that with all technology. short term def bought at the correct time as prices went up after i did

To be honest there never feels like a right time to buy. On the face of it you’ve already seen the massive improvements and to me that’s the main thing.

I thought the price of the reference 6950xt was fantastic so jumped on it myself. It’s making me feel super comfortable where I am as I don’t feel the need to rush into my next choice. Everything that’s out now or due to come out shortly will run great in 4k for me.

Funnily enough for the FSR point I found my experience on Cyberpunk was much better with FSR than DLSS both without Ray Tracing. I finished off the game (10-15hrs) spent playing on the 6950 and it was a joy.

For the coil whine it might be worth doing the kitchen roll test to make sure it is the graphics card. I built a new system for my nephew and the coil whine was actually coming from the power supply. I was quite surprised as it was a seasonic and ended up swapping for an EVGA model.
