• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

The Radeon RX 7900 XT(X) Owners Thread.

My 4090 is running way above stock performance to be honest due to the things I mentioned above.

Based on my 4090, it is marginally faster in FC6 at 4K max settings with RT - when overclocked. However the AIB 7900 XTX should catch it up as they will have higher power limits.

The 4090 is faster overall. I can't see how an AMD GPU could compete with a 660W 4090, but the 7900 XTX should have no trouble handling the 4080 in most things.
4090 may be faster overall but those XTX's are much cheaper. Nearly all the perf of a 4090 at ~70% of the price?

By the time I got to see reviews all the xtx's were sold out so I couldn't see the retail prices as they'd all sold out. If the 4090 and the XTX were released on the same day - bet most would go for the XTX. A few £/fps charts showing the XTX way out in front.

I'll work on that next, using the Extreme preset and Competitive settings.

I chose Far Cry 6 as the built in benchmark is quick and reliable and accurately represents in game performance.

I am running the latest build of Windows 11, with both the AMD and Nvidia drivers installed on my setup. They work perfectly in harmony too, . My system is clean and tuned for optimal performance with minimal background apps running, aside from MSI AB/HWINFO64 and Corsair iCUE (bit of a perf hog iCue but my AIO needs it).

The 4090 is running 527.56, ReBar is at auto setting. The 4090 was run at stock settings and has been repasted using liquid metal. It therefore runs cooler by 5c+ vs normal 4090 GameRocks, the core also moves up a bin due to the lower temperatures. I am using a special performance BIOS that unlocks the power limit up to 660W (stock is 550W) and allows more performance from the 4090 vs the stock BIOS shipped with the GPU. In light of this I will set the power limit to 80% of 550W = 450W to best mimic a true stock 4090. The 4090 was run with 100% fan speed for these tests.

For the 7900 XTX, I installed the 22.12.1 driver. SAM is at auto setting. The 7900 XTX is using the stock thermal paste. The 7900 XTX is limited to a maximum power limit of 335W, it is not possible to raise it further. So the only way to extract more performance is to increase the power limit to +15% which allows up to 335W, and to then lower voltage and finally increase memory frequency. This will net you best overall increase in performance in pure % terms. The 7900 XTX was run with 100% fan speed for these tests.

Far Cry 6 is running at 4K maximum settings, however a couple of effects (blur etc) were disabled. Actual settings used see screenshots below (so you can copy my settings to validate performance if interested).

Final result, 18% performance increase from the stock MBA configuration. Note, even with -150mv, we are still power limited 100% of the time. AIB cards with a higher power limit should be able to extra more performance but for MBA boards, this is as good as you can expect. A nice improvement over stock performance.

Next up, I will test Modern Warfare 2 and maybe a couple of other games. However, I'll only be testing stock and max stable overclocks in future games now I have things dialled in.
Have to say that's some serious uplift.

AMD could patch this undervolt into all future cards and give people this performance out of the box seems like they messed it up a little there!

Third the charm!

Will you be doing similar benches on titles that don’t favour AMD to get a true reflection. We have all seen how well it performs in MW2 so it would be good to see other titles.
I’ll be doing it on games that have a built in benchmark that I have access to and play. I’m not expecting the 7900 XTX to win, as it’s never going to compete with a 660W 4090. Nvidia fan boys may not like the results but that’s just tough tbh. My results simply show both cards tuned to perfection as per the benchmark threads.

Ah ok, bit of a shame as was hoping to compare them to what the reviewer's got. Might just have to get one :D
