The Radeon VII Owners Thread

Downloaded and did a clean install of 19.7.5. Undervolted to 970mv, and watched the same youtube vids as last time, for consistency....

Wattman graph doesn't look quite as spikey as before.....

Looks to be handling things better but does still seem to be peaking at 1,260+. Weird - no crashes though, so either I have a really good stock card, or readings are off... I'm guess the later.

Just a thought, have you checked the bios on your card? The early cards like I had needed a bios update, AMD released a one click tool to run in Windows for it. I did some notes on it earlier in this page.

I bought the card on the day of release, and updated the bios shortly after. Not seen any later ones, so believe I'm on latest.

Up until a couple of months ago I was running on an older intel setup, and then switched to an amd ryzen and x570 board.

Still seeing spikes on 19.7.5. Current max gpu mem speed on hwinfo this evening with general desktop usage is 1,398mhz, with average of 1,043mhz. I do notice memory speed escalates above 1,000 when watching you tube videos pretty consistently, but still does it through general use. I have memory speed set to manual and 1,000mhz in settings.

All very odd - but so far not had any lockups. Only time I got those previously was if I dropped the gpu voltage too low.

Just had a look back for you, my post #623 was where the bios update happened. Very early on it had 2 updates.
016.004.000.038.011717 is the updated version.

I'd double check that's what you're running in Radeon Settings.
Just another thing to tick off the list lol.

At this moment there is no need to move to the newest driver revisions from the x.5.xyor x.7.y version. x.5 is really most stable for overclocking.

The elevated HBM are a stated issue still on the driver notes. As long as its not causing a crash its just miss reporting.

"Known Issues
AMD Radeon VII may experience elevated memory clocks at idle or on desktop."

Yes, spotted that on notes of various versions. Doesn't actually make it clear whether that is actual high clocks or just readings though which was my original question. The way it's worded I would take that as the former myself, since it doesn't mention readings.

From testing so far, it looks like it has been an issue for some time even before it was mentioned as a known issue - at least with the drivers I've tried.

I've tried to overclock on 19.11.3 drivers. !0 seconds of 3dmark run and crash :) It's perfectly stable on 19.5, but not on latest ones with 2070/1130/1217mv

still waiting on MSI for RMA anyone know how long they take/ do they even still stock vega vii if not what replacement will i get
28 days.
"If the manufacturer is unable to return the items within 28 days, we will give you the option of a refund. Depending on the age of the items, the refund may include a deduction for the length of time you have used them (known as rescission). "

Has anyone used this card for 4k gaming?

If so what's it like?
I only game in 4K, it tends to be a little stronger than a 5700xt @4k. It really depends on the game, I've just played the new Grid max settings in HDR10 and it was silky smooth. Mid 70's fps. On the other hand Rage 2 max settings is far more harsh mid 40's fps.
I'm running 1800Mhz @ 950mv, 1140MHz HBM currently with the still broken drivers!

Thing about Rage 2 is, every build is the console build, even on PC (and this ofc sadly applies to a lot of games; in particular Ubisoft anything). So putting settings above consoles you push them in unoptimised ways and they don't scale properly hence performance cliff-dives. On PC you basically get the option to "brute-force" the settings into higher territory but the gains are minimal (visually) while performance demands sky-rocket. It's kinda like pushing resolution continuously on really old games, they don't look better past a certain point (say 4K - maybe) but they could still tank fps <60 fps if you just push 8K (for example). Same thing happened with one of the metro games, where they had Advanced DOF as a setting that you could keep pushing up and even today it murders FPS. It's not that it's an unbelievable effect, it's simply a "brute-force" setting (kinda like the way MSAA is, though at least MSAA is more useful) which will never run well no matter the hardware advances. And ofc, today there's smarter ways to do that in games and we see it all the time & with a minor performance hit.

For Rage 2's intended settings check here (https://youtu.be/-EeCEVckPkY?t=719).

How are Radeon VII users finding the 19.12.3 driver?

I've just updated to 19.12.3, and can see that the memory clocks are all over the place again. Spiking to some really high levels. Posted about it on the drivers thread with some screen shots. I'm surprised there aren't any issues if memory is actually being pushed that high?

Not had issues other than that so far, only played a couple of games.
