The Rainforest Tablet

Not bad, this'll be a strong competitor to the iPad 2 with that price. (great 7" screen, the best/brightest for outdoor use)

...but for me the PS Vita is still the best closed ecosystem portable device (and a proper Windows 8/ICS tablet computer for everyday use)

I agree it's much better than the hannspad. (OMAP4 + top screen >>> cheap screen + tegra 2)

It is Android though. Amazon services and apps will be identical on both, they're just guaranteeing you use them over competitors with very appealing subsidised hardware.

I'm not sure on the 'fire', I like the size but would have preferred a stock os to the 'coverflow' they've used.

Having said that the price is nice assuming it converts favourably and a stock rom is produced (expect it will be rather quickly) especially considering I want a 7" for a media remote at home :)

I have read of a supposed new model of the 7" being released at the beginning of 2012 and there's a side of me hoping this will push the price of the playbook down (been talk of it already) to a similar level as that's pretty similar to webos with the benefits of android apps (Either now or next update) :)

Luckily I'm in no rush as I got a touchpad to tide me over :)

edit: for those on about their app store being us only, it's supposedly been working in the UK for the last week or so.

I'm guessing 4000mAh which is a shame. Playbook has 5300mAh.

4hrs charge time in the specification. So a 1A charger would take 4hrs to charge a 4Ah (4000mAh) battery.

8hrs reading time with wireless off.

edit:

yes i know $199 :p

How do you put your own, non Amazon purchased, music/videos/books/docs onto it? iTunes (despite it's detractors) allows convenient "side-loading" of your own content (albeit with conversion for some content).

The interface looks really slick but so far, it seems, it is linked to amazon (cloud) services only.

There must be side-loading of files. That couldn't possibly be blocked.

Amazon MP3 can play side-loaded music on my phone.

IF and I mean IF the galaxy tab 7 plus turns out to be £199 (I'm being optimistic lol) or less without a contract, even if it's just wifi and no 3g as mentioned I'd pick it up before the amazon fire...
Exynos is no slouch and for what I'm likely to use a 7" slate for that's more than enough performance :)
