The RX Vega 56 Owners Thread

It's the driver and wattman, sometimes the "apply" button just doesn't apply it all correctly and the whole thing becomes unstable ant the system can just freeze opening up an app/gpu-z/3DMark etc. Sometimes the wattman "reset" and 'apply" just don't take and you need to reboot.....pain in the (_!_) but you need to do it and then hit wattman "reset" twice.....just buggy driver/wattman.

Bah that makes sense, thanks.

Will use overdriveN tool instead, I heard its better than wattman.

Corsair CX750. The card boosts properly in 2D games, although undervolting seems to just drop the clocks a bit as well unless the power limit is raised. Do your clocks go up once you undervolt without touching the power limit? I don't know what might be wrong, there could be a problem when the card outputs on a second display (Vive).

edit: If it was a power limit problem the temperature wouldn't be in the 60s I guess, in 2D games it will boost and go up to 80.

not without the power limits it doesn't boost as high no, but the stock profiles play with the power limits anyway by default, balanced is 15% and turbo is 25% i believe. so with no added % you wont see any boosting as that is how the card works.
i have mine set as follows for gaming: stock clocks p6 1537 1020mv p7 1592 1020mv, Hbm 900 stock volts, fan speed manual min 500 max 3800, temp manual max 75, target 70 +50% power. i never see temps higher than 70 and my card boosts fine.

wattool worked well when i was using it, just saved the profile and it reloaded on reboot, seems with 17.9.2 if you are using the custom profile, to increase stability apply after each change you make i/e changing the core to manual, apply, adust clocks apply, change volts to manual apply and so on.

But mine actually goes the other way when I just lower the voltages, shouldn't they still go up a bit or at least stay the same? That seems to be a different issue though as the main problem is that the card won't boost at all in most VR stuff. Reprojection doesn't seem to kick in either. Weird stuff, it is already back in its box to go back :(

yes if you lower the volts and increase the power limt they should go up.
Edit asw working here no problem on the rift.

My latest tinkering results:

Best overclock so far P6 voltage at 950, P7 at 985. Power limit +45%, temps left untouched, fan min 1000, max 2400, memory 950.

Now this passed 20 goes on firestrike with 99.7% stability score, clock were solid ~1495 ,it doesnt even try to reach 1530 and 1570 but this gives one of the highest firestrike graphics score of 22.5k. So I will take stable 1495 over sometimes 1570.

Temps ~75 on core, mid 85 hot spot and 82 on HBM.

Despite it being stable in bf1, bf4 and DOS2 and passing 20 loops of firestrike, it still freezes when I start 3dmark after restart, so I think its just my 3dmark program faulty so I just deleted it altogether.

In games it has been stable so far, lets see if it crashes.

Overlocking vega is pretty damn hard, I just do not understand card, stability to performance to voltage is not linear but appears to be a random wave >_>

I have a Sapphire Vega 56 and ran it for a week or so before putting an EK water block on it. During that time I had a stable overclock that would boost to 1600 mhz Gpu and 945 HBM. volts of 1050 P6, 1100 P7, +50% power limit.
Fan max 2800, temp target 75. Performed well, but boy does it throw out a lot of heat from the back of the case and I didn't like the noise of the blower much either.
Since I put the water block on and flashed it to vega 64 air bios, I can get 1100 on the HBM (although I like 1070 ATM) solid boosting to 1640 mhz and gpu/HBM temps max mid 40's, hot spot 15 deg above. It will go higher but this is really stable for 24/7 Gaming for me - (BF1 that stresses your system to the max).
These cards run really hot and are very temp sensitive and I highly recommend water cooling if you have a custom loop. If not, then just try the above 56 air settings I found for around max performance but push that fan max up to keep the temps down and don't under-volt it too much and hope your DP cable doesn't melt lol.

Curious, what was your firestrike score with that oc on air?

just did another run of Firestrike - p6 1567, p7 1662 HBM 1100, Graphics score - 24072 boost clock hitting 1640
Seems like best gains come from HBM @ 1100, I don't think Gpu clocks will go much further or give much performance gain

Anyone else having issues with the GPU not being used 100%? I thought it was CPU limited games causing if but I just checked and even the threads aren't loading a single core fully either. Because of this the card is only running at around 1200mhz also.

Absolutely fine in heaven and 3D mark, pretty much the only place the card works properly. :-/

Same problem here, I have to turn overwatch render scale to 200% to get 99% gpu usage. But I do think it's partly my cpus fault as it goes over 60% usage at 1080p when running at 200fps ish, as in the training range or with low amount of players the fps climbs as it only has to focus on pushing out frames. However the problem is also probably with the drivers not being well optimized yet, time will tell, hopefully soon.

So far I've only had it with one gsme, rise of the tomb raider, I thought it was odd as I expected it to boost higher with a more demanding game

Same here, I thought oc was unstable but firestrike stability test shows that its stable so I am not sure why it refuses to boost to proper clocks in some games, temps are like 50-60c so there is more than enough room, its as if the card knows its pushing above 60fps so it decides not to boost based on that. If I turn resolution to 200% on bf1 and bf4 then card starts to boost to max clocks. This is odd and annoying behavior, would appreciate if more knowledgeable members could explain what could cause this.

Edit: I wonder, maybe if the card will still not boost clocks in certain games if we flash it into Vega 64 bios and undervolt.

Ive only noticed my card not boosting or only boosting to around 1000-1200mhz in games that are limited to 60fps. In BF1 and PUBG etc it's boosting to around 1610mhz with state 7 set at 1630mhz. My card is under water and doesn't go over 45c at 1050mV with hotspot and hbm temps hitting 50c

If your card is under water, why are you undervolting? you're killing your performance and limiting your max clocks.
